I was supposed to do this post in November, but I got entangled in other stuff and completely forgot about it! Better late, despite the extra task of re-inking the pics to change Nov to Dec.

Good friend Margaret Davies (https://margaretsdesignercards.blogspot.com/) has been a very active participant in our FB events, sharing her tweaks and adaptations as well as her trials and patterns.  (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/aug-roundup-1.html). 

Back in July (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/07/heart-pattern.html) I had shared the prototype pattern for a heart extracted from Endrucks' pattern #37, even though I was not happy with it's proportion. Margaret jumped in to enlarge the heart. Such a simple and effective solution to raise the height by adding a ring on either side!

When she posted her pic, someone thought it looked like an angel, and she again took up the gauntlet and converted the enlarged heart into an angel! We asked her to share her pattern for our November FB event and she enthusiastically agreed, sending in the written patterns. 

While tatting it to prepare for the game, #tagmeEndrucks, I noticed that it made a beautiful bell when turned on it's head. Thus we have 3 patterns in one - angelic!

This is my completed angel, worked in 2 colours for the tat-along. You have seen parts of it in 2 earlier posts (links below) but not the complete model. This is such a versatile pattern in the sense that we can follow different paths, use different techniques, embellish in numerous ways, and use in different ways, too.

For the tat-along I deliberately left out the beads in my model though the diagram and written pattern in the pdf follow Margaret's beaded models.

I will need multiple posts to showcase all the models that came in, some with very interesting tweaks or displays. Stay tuned to be inspired! Meanwhile hope you enjoy our little gift to adorn your festive season.

Hearts want to play, organise themselves into groups and shapes. Well it's not new in our tatting world (see links at the end of post), yet each arrangement takes on the characteristics of its component hearts. Anchor Pearl Cotton size 8 is similar to Lizbeth size 20;

and Anchor crochet cotton size 20 is similar to Lizbeth size 10.

I Love this arrangement for an elegant bracelet or bookmark.

The hearts can be tatted continuously in pairs of 2 (like the 2 in the center) with split ring tips.

Another arabesque arrangement for a quilt block or a frame.

4 friends together form a square.

The 4 hearts at the bottom can be arranged alternately for an insertion or bookmark.

These, as well as the earrings are worked in Anchor Perle Cotton size 8. Each earring heart measures about 2.5cms x 2.5cms, and the skewed arrangement gives an earring measuring about 4cms wide and 7.5 cms long (without the teardrop).

The body of this bookmark (Margaret Davies' adaptation), also worked in Anchor Pearl size 8 measures 3.5cms x 12.5 cms.

After adding the braid and tassel, it almost touches 30cms.

A couple of my Indian tatters directed me to where I could purchase the bookmark sleeves online! And I did! Thanks, ladies.While for personal use, I still prefer bare lace (hence the tassel is attached to the bookmark, not the sleeve), the sleeves will keep them protected and flat when not in use or when gifting.

I pulled the tassel through the hole at the tip, thus anchoring it.

The maroon prototype was worked in Anchor size 20 and is 3.5cms wide and 3 cms high.

The other 2 are the enlarged hearts .....

On the left is Margaret Davies' enlarged version, with 16/0 beads. In Anchor Pearl size 8, it works out to 3.5cms x 3.5cms.

The right one is my slight variation with longer top chains and a beaded loop to insert a chain or findings. It now measures >4cms x 3.5cms.

Now for the exciting part ----- Look closely at the center .....

Eye Spy a Pentagon in this coaster ....

[In Anchor size 20 the diameter is 7cms]

.... and Eye Spy a Square in this pendant!

Both pentagon and square can be worked in one pass. Can you figure out the pathway?

It was Carol Liu's colour placement which first brought out the pentagon clearly.

heartily lemony happy

 Such a happy day! Woke up yesterday morning to our very first ripened lemon that had fallen off the 'tree'! 2 of our first lemons had been turning yellow for a few weeks now.

Below is a variation shared by Margaret Davies, of the Eye Spy Heart #2 from Endrucks' pattern #37 I had shared recently. (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/07/heart-pattern.html) I had tatted it the night before.

The upper 3 lemons are store-bought about 8-10 days old. And look at the size of our home-grown fruit! It has taken EIGHT months from flower to ripened fruit! Wow.

At one time we had 12 fruits on the tree, but gradually they fell off and only 5 remained. Now, with a 3rd blossoming, we see 4 more, if they don't drop off.

Haven't gotten around to slicing it.... One half is yellower than the other because of exposure to the sun.

So, remember how I was trying to improve the proportion of the heart and finally shared the pattern as is due to paucity of time for further trials? Well, Margaret took up the challenge and increased the height so cleverly with a simple addition of rings! https://margaretsdesignercards.blogspot.com/2022/07/endrucks-1920-tatting-project.html

  

I would much rather prefer the middle pair of chains to be more arched as in the left one and it can probably be accomplished by making the center pair of rings a wee bit smaller and the chains a wee bit longer. But that's for another day.

This is taken fresh off the shuttles the night before, without any damp shaping.

And then I blocked the heart and love how well it has turned out. My slight tweak to Margaret's is that I increased the top chain lengths by 3ds on each side, and the tiny ring at the tip is 6ds instead of 4. 

I will share the pattern, with diagram ....

In perle size 8, it measures 4.5 cms tall and 5 cms wide.

It was a happy end to the day and a great start to a new day!

Watch out for Margaret's blog. She has converted the heart into an angel!!!!

There is no way play will be abandoned when there are hearts around! You see my fun arrangements for possible patterns in the collage below.

Several tatters liked the maroon heart - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/07/spying-again.html. I wanted to tweak it a bit and did. 

But it did not seem to make much difference. Any further experiments will be way into the future.

Hence here is the temporary pattern with count and sequence. Eventually I will add a diagram and convert into a proper pdf. For now, enjoy and play with it all you want. Do share your versions and experiments.

 I have been spending all my tatting time in front of a computer screen, writing, updating, coordinating, ..... Too much 'intellectual' activity without dirtying one's hands is not the way to have fun!  So I took a little time off last night and did a trial of this heart.

If you remember it is the 3rd hearts that I outlined in Endrucks' doily #37 here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2021/12/cupping-hearts.html. [pattern for the '2nd' one has already been shared here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/01/a-hearty-meal-of-tinies.html 

Tatted in Anchor size 20, the size is perfect for earrings or pendant. Or a brooch or charm.

This was a quick trial to get a feel of the shape, etc. Worked continuously in one pass.

A few things that need tweaking -

1. Proportion - it should be taller!

2. The side ring on the left bottom needs to face in opposite direction for symmetry. Also, the joining picot there was a bit too long, hence the untidy effect.

3. The side rings can be asymmetrical in order to achieve a better overall shape and height.

4. Make the topmost chains longer and also join them above the center.

5. Decorative picots/beads

What else do you think needs improvement?

I have this idea to add long picots in one pair of negative spaces, and join the chains above to these --- like a filling. But it will be in the faraway future unless somebody gets in on the game ;-D

 Who inspires whom? What inspires what? How does it all work? Whatever the philosophical underpinnings, this is a simple post on what more the eye saw in Endrucks' pattern #3 besides the original edging, square motifs, and a fruit/flower bowl.

I changed 28 to 30 ds chain in my model above. Work moves counterclockwise in fs/bs tatting 

My head is brimming with butterfly versions using techniques, effects, beads, etc.!  

In Anchor size 20, the butterfly is less than 4cms across and 3.5 cms high.

This is my Eye Spy Heart from the same source. I had sketched the idea over the Square motif (scroll down to the last pic in that post), but it got forgotten among all other projects. Sue's butterfly motivated me to work it out and believe me, the above model is both my prototype as well as the final piece, finished in less than an hour, and no blocking required, either!

Stich count is notated over the model itself. I deliberately went clockwise for the chains, so that they could be worked frontside. You are free to move in the opposite direction.

Please note that I made a mistake in chain H which I noticed only now. Chain H should be 6ds, just like chain E.

Work in size 10 thread, since the finished size is small. My Heart, in Anchor size 20, measures less than 4cms across and 3cms high.

2 shuttles, CTM. 2 split rings and 1 mock ring.

The motif is worked clockwise all from the front, except for ringG. Hence reverse work (rw) only before and after ring G.

Sh2: ch-C: 3 (-3)x8, SS

Sh1: SR-D: 6 / 4 +(to A) 4. SS

 I couldn't resist! Lea Rako (of AlenAlea fame with her gorgeous hand dyed threads and patterns) turned an edging into 2 square motifs by turning it outwards and inwards! The pdf will soon be uploaded to the project doc and I will update the link here.

I tired it with colours. The insert is an optional variation to Square #1 for those who do not like large open spaces.  

This is how the square looks without the insert. I don't mind it at all. In this pattern, the edging is turned outwards and the motifs look like an open lotus to me.

This is how the edging is, which I tatted back in August. Anita Barry modernised the pattern and presented the pattern in modern style. And of course, you can access it from the main document.

 

I loved playing with colour positions, using repositioning methods (I don't exactly remember which was used where) - See Lock Join Plus series. I haven't cut off the threads, wanting to play some more in future. There are so many more possibilities!

In Anchor Pearl size 8, this measures 2.5cms across and 3cms diagonally. Good for a mug coaster.

Imagine the edging turned inwards; the triad lying inside and a few elements added to span the distance. That is the 2nd square pattern included in her pdf. 

Lea also tessellated the squares into a beautiful fabric! For both squares, Lea indicates the joining picots when tessellated. 

And before I sign off, Eye Spy yet another heart!!! It will require a bit of juggling to get a smooth outline since the 2 side rings tend to lie beyond the outline. Worth a try, though, right?

a hearty meal of tinies

 There was so much interest when I asked which of the 4 trial hearts tatters preferred, that I can't help but serve up a hearty buffet for whatever each person's preference might be. However since #4 received the most votes (only written comments, no reactions counted) - 33, and #2 - 19, these are the ones I am sharing first. 8 tatters liked all 4.

Linda Reiff saw an eye in the middle and suggested I call it 'Eye Spy' instead of 'I Spy' .... guess what, this is exactly what Anita Barry calls her extracted hearts (I had forgotten).

The hearts measure just around 3cms in Anchor size 20 which is equivalent to Lizbeth size 10.

This is by far the most favoured heart, hence the one I started diagramming first. Ninetta says this pattern can be used as a teaching model. Quite true; there are so many possibilities to play with sequence, techniques, effects, etc. It's size makes it an ideal practice pattern.

If you remember, this was the precursor to the picoted version. For first trials I keep picots to a minimum, especially decorative ones. Several tatters pointed out their personal preference for clean lines. 

It is easy to needle tat the motif. I am not focused enough to give instructions. But any needle tatter who wishes to test and share notes, please go ahead. I will include it in the pdf.

Amarilys Cwb wondered how a double picot would look. So I used that idea to string gold bicone beads over it! All the other crystals & teardrop are strung on shuttle 2 thread, with a single gold bead on shuttle 1. The large red crystal in the center can be sewn in later, or you can use this clever method by Ninetta - bead inside ring - https://www.flickr.com/photos/ninettacaruso/13713249233/.

I don't know why I chose this metallic thread and not the solid gold or silver! The effect would've been much better.

Almost down to the wire, but then hearts are in style throughout the year, especially if they bring happiness, happy hands and hearts with some chocolate thrown in!! And it's a fairly quick tat with not much thread required. So jump right in 💖

Based on the trials here, I worked another (top) last evening and then one more (below) which I am counting as the final pattern. Wish I could've tatted it more neatly, but it will still remain unforgettable since the earth literally shook while I was tatting! Earthquake tremors.

Design TIP: I used roll tatting instead of normal chains or lock chains for the lower segments because roll tatting is the narrowest 2-thread tatted line possible, right? 

There are numerous ways one can tat this tiny heart. I am sharing only one path and method. Feel free to adapt to your imagination (and skill level) but please share your version! Depending on individual tatting tension, you might have to tat one less or more half-stitch for the flushed chains.

Materials: 
Best worked in size 10. In Anchor size 20, this motif is 3cms tall and 3.5cms wide.
2 shuttles wound continuously (ctm). (In my yellow trials I had worked with a single shuttle and ball, using SLT to keep shuttle in hand).

Techniques used: fs/bs tatting, dimpled ring, mock ring, lock join, CWJ & DYJ optional, roll tatting. All tutorials can be found here- https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/p/tatting-resources.html

RA) 1) Paper clip to hold the ring and pull tight 2) Work to first join and pull off needle to make join.
CB) 1) Picots I picked up with needle point to use working thread would twist stitches.
CD) 1) Roll tatting = ds 16 wraps around the needle ds Hint- hold tight it is a bugger to take out and re-do.

Some Ideas and Possibilities -

• Add beads and findings and use as jewellery - pendant, earrings, brooch. Inverted, with beads and a braid/chain, it can work as tikka jewellery for brides!

• Of course, applique on fabric or glue to paper. Motifs can be used anywhere! By the way, that chocolate (Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate) is seriously one of the Best I've tasted. 

• Arrange/sew motifs stacked vertically for bookmark. When joined in a row (with additional picots) we could get an edging or trim, or even a choker! 

• In the above arrangement, it appears we'll need 5 motifs to complete the polygon. Hmmm, I see a possible 4-leaf clover leaf there, too!

• And this is such an appealing Arabesque arrangement! Love the curves.

• UPDATE: I forgot to upload this at the time. The 2 yellow hearts can be worked continuously by tatting the tiny hearts at the bottom as a split rings to climb out of one heart and climb into the next.
