I have often updated a post (highlighted as 'UPDATE') without any separate notification. This time I thought a special post would be good for those interested since there are quite a few. I was very impressed with the way Ninetta had started her ring seamlessly without making any 'join' by using the same joining loop as a ring loop. Well, forgetful brain did not put two and two together especially considering I have used this method before. It is basically the Ring on Picot technique which Patty Dowden demonstrated in this video -https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LmMxIBrDpRI

When I wrote about Fringe Tatting and the Tatted Fringe I did not highlight that beads could be used for the fringe, too. Eventually I made a beaded fringe inspired by and following Corina Meyfeldt's directions for Beaded Stem. Nina Libin called it Single File Beaded Picot.  The beads are pre-strung on the shuttle or ball thread depending on the pattern and each fringe or beaded picot is moved in place when needed.

This method is fine for a limited number of fringe elements/picots with a limited number of beads on each or if all the beads are on the ball thread.

I had sent the vapour stitch bouquet pic for PICOT Bingo, but couldn't complete the game in the way I had intended and imagined. 5 boxes still left to cross out. Natalie, too, has uploaded a 2025 bingo card, but I won't be participating. See how disciplined I am being this year?! ;-D

 Can't believe its been six years since we worked the Design Round Robin (DRR) doilies in Craftree and I find that I have posted round-wise pics of only one doily! Time to rectify the situation. However, I will have to limit myself to pics, 'coz it is too much work to hunt down my notes for each round I either designed or tatted. Good for you, huh, less to read ... but plenty of pics! ;-D

Worked in Anchor embroidery threads, 3 strands equivalent to Lizbeth size 20.

Round 1 - Muskaan. I designed the center for this doily. 

The green/blue one was made first but not being happy with my tatting, I started over with the bottom one. This pattern is originally from my enclosed space medallion phase with only minor tweaks to add picots for joining subsequent rounds. It has triple onion rings where the innermost Josephine ring is made using the floating beads method so that it stands a bit apart.

She used her tweak on the Captured onion ring technique, which I have been using since. 

Round 4 - TIM K.  

He designed the round in such a way as to fit any tension.

He used Split SCMR and also shared a video on how to make it in his blog - http://timtatstoo.blogspot.com/p/the-split-self-closing-mock-ring.html

However I remember discovering that the split scmr was not really needed in this case and explaining how to go about it. 

This completed our round robin of four designers. Started in Feb 2018 and finished within the same year. Design round robin entails we each tat all the rounds of each doily sequentially designing and tatting by turns. No need to mail off the doily ....

I felt we could do with another round or two, but was not sure how to go about it. In March 2023, Coretta worked out a 5th round and shared it!!! I tatted it early this month.

Round 5 - CORETTA L.  

After mulling over the colour scheme since I wanted the round to reflect the earlier colours, yet not be too overwhelming or bright, I came up with the following solution... 

The onion rings are tatted in three peacock colours but as separate motifs. Carrying 3 extra threads encapsulated within the chains would add too much bulk and skew the arches.

The tails are hidden or sewn, but left untrimmed. Couldn't risk any tail being pulled out when the outer chain round was tatted and joined! 

Green for border would make the entire composition too greenish which is why I chose to repeat the inner round blue; it also carries forward the peacock impression.

All trimmed and done. However, I used 4 strands of blue after realising that 3 might not allow the doily to lie flat since my chains are usually tight.

Anchor embroidery 3 strands equivalent to Lizbeth size 20.
Orange - 0333 ; Yellow - 0306 ; Green - 0258 ; Purple - 097 ; Blue - 0170 (4 strands in last round).

Final diameter - 17 cms or just under 7 inches.

This additional round has really brought the entire design together and I love how it looks. What do you think? Too many colours or ....

Now that all the main patterns from Endrucks' 1920 book are in modern format, barring 2, Ninetta and I decided to start holding occasional events in our FB group. The first such official event or Game of the Month is a simple heart that tatters need to embellish or use to embellish something. We also decided to open it up to our non-FB tatters, if you wish to participate.

There are several paths one can take to tat the heart, including starting from a different point. This is my tricolour earring prettification. We are celebrating 75 years of Independence today and I see the Tiranga (our Tricolour) everywhere! 

Worked in Anchor Pearl cotton size 8.

I didn't have time (or the right size/colour beads) to decorate further.

A small ring 8ds was added in the topmost heart to hold the hook.

I used my Floating Beads method to attach the teardrop without stringing it on the shuttle.

UPDATE - The following explanatory para is added in response to a couple of queries - 

How to interlink the hearts - 

Each heart was interlaced in a very simple manner through the final chain. Start from the topmost heart, then work your way down. So, tat the 2nd heart till the very end but leave the last chain unattached. Cut off tails and then insert the 'free' chain through the 1st heart, join to the base of the starting rings, tie and cut and hide ends. 

Repeat the same when interlinking 3rd heart to the 2nd.

NOTE: For fs/bs tatters, start the 2nd heart with backside rings so that the final chain is on the right.

There were other ideas such as decreasing the heart sizes (hut didn't have colours in required sizes); joining at the tips (but I kind of preferred this free-style effect with a bit of twisting when worn)....

The heart is Eye Spy Heart from Endrucks' edging #3 which I spotted when tatting the square derived from the edging. 

Use beads, decorative picots, tatting effects or techniques, or colour-play to make the heart pretty or use it to make enhance the beauty of something else.

We have already received several variations of the heart pattern, besides beautification, and those patterns are also being shared!  I swear if you watch me do beaded tatting you will forget how to tat with beads! My fervent wish is that a beading friend sit beside me and help me use the tools and materials I have effectively and efficiently. I simply fumble my way through, taking a ginormous amount of time even for simple patterns. And nothing comes simpler than this earring pattern!

Remember I told you about receiving many gift patterns around ITD this year? This simple one-shuttle earring pattern is a special gift from Jill McLean! Here is my journey ....

1. My first trials with new metallic thread (Natvarlal brand) failed. The single thread broke soon after starting my 1st attempt. 

So I used 2 threads above, but while closing the ring, one thread broke. Had to be abandoned.

2. Played safe on my next trial, using size 20 metallic thread.  

My only variation was using 2 different coloured beads. The yellow ones (up beads) went around the hand on the ring loop, while the blue ones (down beads) were pulled from the shuttle. 

Stringing beads didn't require too many brain cells - load all of one colour, then all of the other!

TIP : One can work the small ring as a SSSR hiding the tail without any sewing! (Miranda pictorial ; Marilee video)

3. Friends urged me to use my silk threads. So here's one Opella silk skein (all 6 strands) along with faceted bicone crystals in 2 colours - the inner green are a tad smaller than the outer silver crystals. 

I used metallic silver thread to make jump rings for the 2 teardrops. Huh, they don't look too bad in the pic, but I had a tough time getting them into shape, especially doubled up. 

Here the large ring took patience while closing - had to slide the stitches to the left in batches till the ring finally closed. 

This time the small ring on top is a split ring, sewing in tails on either side after making an overhand tie. 

TIP : But there's a way to end on a SR without sewing, too.

4. How would it look if the size of beads was inverted? So, large black wooden beads on the inside and small seed beads (17/0) on the outside! 4 seed beads per wooden bead. 

This time I decided to make a mock ring and was going to make onion rings, but switched to a red Swarovski crystal surrounded by seed beads instead. Both used Floating Beads methods.

The black beads are strung through 5 strands of Anchor silk thread on shuttle1; and silver metallic thread with seed beads on shuttle2. 

My idea was to have the red colour show up in the stitches between the black beads. How wrong was I! Unless I used reverse (unflipped) stitches, the red is hidden. Felt like a fool, but didn't feel like undoing the first few stitches, so continued.

QUICK TIP : Tatting with Metallic thread 

This metallic thread is pretty much a wire with silver thread wrapped around it and it was difficult to get a flipped stitch, especially the first half stitch.... till I hit upon a little movement!

1. Floating beads at the start, and an open chain in progress which will be joined back into a mock ring using a lock join.

2. Making the 1st half stitch. The silk thread does not have enough strength to make the metallic thread flip. With any free finger/thumb, gently push the loop indicated by arrow ... push it upwards and it's a Flip!!!

3. And there it is - the 1st hs. The 2nd half stitch poses no problem. 

And that's it for now. Other ideas percolating in my head will have to wait for another day.

Isn't it amazing how simple variations and combinations can create a range of effects?!

Design TIP : The size of the down/inner bead, besides the size of thread used, affects the size of the earring as is evident above. The up beads do not affect size of ring. 

The double layer of beads adds stability of shape and structure, besides the visual effect.

And this is such an easy but versatile pattern that one can make a pair for every dress!

 I started with gusto, especially after seeing the fabulous versions being posted in the Italian facebook group - Chiacchierino: Filo, Amore e Fantasia. Through the ups and downs, I ended up with a slightly modified version.

La Presentosa designed and shared by the prolific and hugely talented Paola Bevilacqua. And her handwriting is so beautiful!

The above was actually my 2nd start, since I had to unravel the first (I will share a quick tip about that in another post) where the teardrop proved too big. Although I noticed that the Josephine Ring and surrounding beads are a bit large for the blue arch space, I persevered, but ended up with a knotted ring that refused to come undone. Scrapped and restarted.

The central heart is a mock dimpled ring (lock joined at base). The crystal and beaded ring use Floating Beads method. While the crystal is loose, the silver beads were pre-strung. 

Continued with white as core, but added blue thread on chain.

And this time the JR is substituted with picot ring.

I crystal flanked by a silver bead is loaded on blue thread above the picoted ring. 

Round 1 complete. I finished off with 3 silver beads on either side of teardrop crystal which was attached with FB method. 

I'm very happy with this, though not impeccable.

Started round 2 at a different picot from the instructions so that I could hide ends in 'new' elements.

I joined the final teal arch incorrectly. AND this was despite the fact that I kept tugging and pulling before joining wondering why it was being so difficult! Instead of the southernmost tip, the penultimate arch should've gone over to the other side where that empty picot lies. I honestly debated long and hard whether to leave it be since I saw this only when I was blocking it. But Mr Meticulous moved in this time, sigh!

Snipped and unraveled and added new thread. But I still had to add an extra teal arch because of which it looks a bit cramped. If I hadn't, the teardrop and beads would get hidden.

When tatting round 2 I had to unwind from shuttle to weave for overlapping arches. Used only 1 shuttle throughout. The blue and teal were scrap lengths. Seed beads were strung. 

Anchor Pearl cotton (size 8) is my best choice for colour & shade range and for stringing tiny beads. However, not so good for tiny rings, Josephines, etc. with the fibres and loose twist causing friction. Which is why I switched to picot flowers instead of the JR.
Working with Lizbeth for the snowflake (in previous post), brought out the comfort, ease and joy when tatting with Lizbeth. But I have to ration myself ;-P

My apologies to Paola. Despite all the time and fiddling demanded by beads, I enjoyed tatting it and am happy with it. Only wish I'd done a better job with this medallion.

...if only ;-D But one can always bring the sea home or a friend can send us the sand and waves, sprinkled with pearls!  

This is a slight adaptation, in trying to manifest Ninetta Caruso's Heart by the Sea in thread, which is the reason for this unusual colour combo. An island surrounded by the sea and pearls, and palm trees!

It'd been ages since I picked my shuttles and you can see how my first attempts failed due to uncooperative threads. The yellow one is in metallic-wound size 20 which was no fun this time. The beige one got stuck while closing! 

So, in my 3rd attempt, I worked the hearts as mock rings (SCMRs). Worked. Notice the extra hearts? I wanted to show partially open oysters with a pearl inside. Not my best effort, but Dr Downplay came out to play :-) I really just wanted to enjoy some tatting time.

And for fun, I used a CWJ to join the small heart to the lower large one. Hmm, please don't, unless the picot is long! While the small heart had a smooth outline, it distorted the large one slightly.

I love the flower she inserted! I chose tinted green to represent a palm grove and the brown crystal could be coconuts?

The tiny seed beads represent the frothy waves on pristine blue waters, hitting the shores! The almost white sands and brilliant blue sea is an image stamped in my mind from the outskirts of Perth (Australia).

TIP: If you start the heart frontside, the pattern will move counterclockwise unlike that indicated in the diagram (starting with A). I was following the diagram only, and hence all my subsequent rings were worked backside. It is only now that I noticed her stepwise pics showing her counterclockwise WIP pics!

In Anchor Pearl cotton size 8, the heart measures 5cmsx5.5cms.

TIP: I started the green motif at the ring marked E in diagram, moving clockwise, so that there was more open space to close out the motif in the end.

Beads used - size 10/0 pearls (rescued as can be seen in their darker tinge!); 2 pearls - 4mm; crystal size 9/0; silver seed beads size 26/0.

For all pearl beads, I used my Floating Beads method - no need to load beads on a shuttle! However, I added one more step - capturing the bead within the first half stitch as in this onion rings method. It was Kathleen Minniti who captured the 'floating ring' in our round robin doily instead of simple FB method.
