E Hearts

Pin It now!

We have quite a collection of hearts derived from Endrucks' patterns and even more patterns where these hearts have been applied such as bookmarks, coasters, butterflies, etc. There are even more I have spied in other patterns that will hopefully come to life in thread some time. Or I might just share the idea for others to work out.

The above is only a fraction of the hearts/applications I tatted. Found these easily in the two nearest boxes I rummaged through. But there is not a single heart from pattern #1 here, nor butterflies, etc.
It was spur of the moment and I hastily put this collage together.
The above hearts are from E3, E5, E28, E32, E37.

The patterns have been derived by many members and you can download all patterns from the Hearts Directory here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view
And don't forget to look at the eye candy and other pattern directories listed at the end.

If you complete tatting your first pattern from our Endrucks' Collection and show us a pic, we will be happy to send you a little gift!

💖 Happy E Tatting ! 💖

what a heart

Pin It now!

Hearts are great motifs to learn and apply new techniques, practice and hone skills, embellish, and create new designs! Look at where this tiny little heart has travelled so far .... without forgetting it's origins!

It all started with Endrucks' pattern #3 (1920), an edging which was reworked and presented by Anita Barry (2020), which inspired AlenAlea Rako to turn it into squares (2021), from which I espied a heart (2022) and Sue Bradham saw a butterfly (2022).

A few months later, when we chose this heart pattern for one of our games (Pretty Me Endrucks Aug2022), more adaptations came about! These include a key chain by Marina MadJar tatting, an enlarged heart motif and one-pass bookmark by Margaret Davies, a coaster by Ninetta Caruso, and a butterfly by Stephaine Mc (Tattimic). Pattern links here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/aug-roundup-1.html

During our game and later, several arrangements were shared including 3-in-1 Earrings, Collar, Bookmark, and other ideas. https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/playful-hearts.html

This heart continued to inspire and Ninetta, through her coaster, designed the Tat Me Snowflake (2 versions) in Nov - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZENvdgxihM0YI3Ar_UxP9lqRwprmFotP/view

2023 started with the pattern being tatted and published by Judith Connors in their Talking Tatting, Feb2023 newsletter. She kindly permitted us to share her complete article  - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aJ34xgaE67A0aI8LTj2xYpvx-NQLrBx1/view

Later in June, Michelle Forclaz made additions to the hearts to make the Inside Out Flowers. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13L0NCvkqJM94Bnbnbf4ogVUzhhYjuaSN/view  The pdf also shows a few other adaptations she tried such as a little teddy bear, fox head, and butterfly.

Meanwhile tatters have often picked up the pattern and shared their versions, many with beads, and applications. And 2 new patterns emerged in December.

For more heart derivatives, check the Hearts Directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view
For more E3 pattern derivatives, check out the other Directories as well. We now have a composite doc listing all directory links (making it easier to reference, etc.). Endrucks Directories  - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w1TZBg-HIzseGEUoJ-rko7tNbtSgZY5A18Oy2Y9Hh0Y/view

Please note that in this post, I have included pics of only the 'new' models that haven't been shared here so far.

Hearty thanks to each and every Endrucksian mentioned here! Hope you continue your exploration and experimentation, sharing the beautiful results.

before and after 1

Pin It now! Our new game for the month of December is well underway, this time hosted by Ninetta, with patterns by Krystyna Mura and Ninetta Caruso. As admin we have certain privileges such as getting the pattern in advance and being able to tat them before anybody else ;-D.

This time we converted a simple #tatmeEndrucks game into a contest for those willing to participate. Tat as many as you can and there is a 'cover prize'. Now as admin we are also at a disadvantage since it wouldn't be fair to count a model tatted beforehand in the contest. ;-P I got around it, just for kicks, with a Before and After look to the 2 patterns, working in some extras. Here's the first one ....

Tat Me Snowflake designed by Ninetta Caruso
I was privy to her design process and testing her Pretty Me Coaster version since our August game. https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/aug-roundup-1.html .

At the time the 6-armed version wouldn't lie flat. We discussed a few options.
This is a variation of Endrucks' pattern #3 and the heart derived from it.

Ninetta came up with this clever adaptation by changing the stitch count of the chains around the heart. Notice how the lower one has broader repeats. The new version is kind of narrower.

So this is my BEFORE version. Worked in Red Heart size 20 with bicone crystals in 2 colours and sizes. All pre-strung on shuttle 2. The 2 sizes gives a better tapering effect to each arm.
I had deliberately left extremely tiny picots around the center intending to fill it up later with beads.

E3 Tat Me Snowflake by Ninetta Caruso (2022) -https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZENvdgxihM0YI3Ar_UxP9lqRwprmFotP/view

And this is the AFTER version (sorry the colours don't show up here). Took me an hour and half to embellish. All sewn in with sewing thread. I like my idea of the bugle beads sticking out creating a kind of very pointed star within.
The large bicone red crystal in the center is surrounded by 6 orange and 12 smaller green bicones.

The same taken in the sun showing the bead colours a bit better.
I liked the personal challenge of adding beads in 'new' ways.

In my next post I will show the 2nd Before and After.

If you wish to join in, you can find the patterns in our Endrucks 1920 Project FB group. Direct links are on the top in the right panel of my blog.

playful hearts

Pin It now!

Hearts want to play, organise themselves into groups and shapes. Well it's not new in our tatting world (see links at the end of post), yet each arrangement takes on the characteristics of its component hearts. So, let's see what the Eye Spy (extracted from pattern #3) or #prettymeEndrucks hearts are playing at ....   direct link to the pattern pdf - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t3DhpAeXUBi4oZegOty-q5Ux-zfntdYf/view

And do scroll down to the bottom of the post for some new spy work!!!!
Also, we have another participant who sent her pretty me heart. I have updated the round up post here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/aug-roundup-3.html

Anchor Pearl Cotton size 8 is similar to Lizbeth size 20;
and Anchor crochet cotton size 20 is similar to Lizbeth size 10.
I Love this arrangement for an elegant bracelet or bookmark.
The hearts can be tatted continuously in pairs of 2 (like the 2 in the center) with split ring tips.

Another arabesque arrangement for a quilt block or a frame.

4 friends together form a square.

The 4 hearts at the bottom can be arranged alternately for an insertion or bookmark.
These, as well as the earrings are worked in Anchor Perle Cotton size 8. Each earring heart measures about 2.5cms x 2.5cms, and the skewed arrangement gives an earring measuring about 4cms wide and 7.5 cms long (without the teardrop).

The body of this bookmark (Margaret Davies' adaptation), also worked in Anchor Pearl size 8 measures 3.5cms x 12.5 cms.
After adding the braid and tassel, it almost touches 30cms.

A couple of my Indian tatters directed me to where I could purchase the bookmark sleeves online! And I did! Thanks, ladies. While for personal use, I still prefer bare lace (hence the tassel is attached to the bookmark, not the sleeve), the sleeves will keep them protected and flat when not in use or when gifting.
I pulled the tassel through the hole at the tip, thus anchoring it.

The maroon prototype was worked in Anchor size 20 and is 3.5cms wide and 3 cms high.
The other 2 are the enlarged hearts .....

On the left is Margaret Davies' enlarged version, with 16/0 beads. In Anchor Pearl size 8, it works out to 3.5cms x 3.5cms.
The right one is my slight variation with longer top chains and a beaded loop to insert a chain or findings. It now measures >4cms x 3.5cms.

Now for the exciting part ----- Look closely at the center .....
Eye Spy a Pentagon in this coaster ....
[In Anchor size 20 the diameter is 7cms]
.... and Eye Spy a Square in this pendant!
Both pentagon and square can be worked in one pass. Can you figure out the pathway?

It was Carol Liu's colour placement which first brought out the pentagon clearly.

pretty me heart fun

Pin It now!

Now that all the main patterns from Endrucks' 1920 book are in modern format, barring 2, Ninetta and I decided to start holding occasional events in our FB group. The first such official event or Game of the Month is a simple heart that tatters need to embellish or use to embellish something. We also decided to open it up to our non-FB tatters, if you wish to participate.

pretty me aug 2022 - Endrucks 1920 Project Facebook group event

Do you remember this maroon heart I shared here (now updated with diagram and written pattern for alternate path) - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/06/to-and-fro-inspiration.html

We chose it for the event in our FB group and are throwing it open to all tatters.
Download the one-page pattern pdf with diagram, model, and written pattern and begin decorating - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t3DhpAeXUBi4oZegOty-q5Ux-zfntdYf/view

There are several paths one can take to tat the heart, including starting from a different point. While only the basic path is shared in the pdf (which should be easy for needle tatters and relative new shuttle tatters), I updated my blog post with diagram and written pattern for the path shown there initially. Check it out if you prefer to tat clockwise all from the front - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/06/to-and-fro-inspiration.html

This is my tricolour earring prettification. We are celebrating 75 years of Independence today and I see the Tiranga (our Tricolour) everywhere!
Worked in Anchor Pearl cotton size 8.
I didn't have time (or the right size/colour beads) to decorate further.
A small ring 8ds was added in the topmost heart to hold the hook.
I used my Floating Beads method to attach the teardrop without stringing it on the shuttle.

UPDATE - The following explanatory para is added in response to a couple of queries -
How to interlink the hearts -
Each heart was interlaced in a very simple manner through the final chain. Start from the topmost heart, then work your way down. So, tat the 2nd heart till the very end but leave the last chain unattached. Cut off tails and then insert the 'free' chain through the 1st heart, join to the base of the starting rings, tie and cut and hide ends.
Repeat the same when interlinking 3rd heart to the 2nd.
NOTE: For fs/bs tatters, start the 2nd heart with backside rings so that the final chain is on the right.

There were other ideas such as decreasing the heart sizes (hut didn't have colours in required sizes); joining at the tips (but I kind of preferred this free-style effect with a bit of twisting when worn)....

The heart is Eye Spy Heart from Endrucks' edging #3 which I spotted when tatting the square derived from the edging.

Use beads, decorative picots, tatting effects or techniques, or colour-play to make the heart pretty or use it to make enhance the beauty of something else.

We have already received several variations of the heart pattern, besides beautification, and those patterns are also being shared! You can join our FB group with your version of the heart, or simply send the pic to either Ninetta (https://ninettacaruso.blogspot.com/ ) or to me, with your name and any project details you might wish to share.

There is a special album (pretty me aug 2022) to collect all pics though at present it is missing a lot of the pics which members have shared on the Home page; and a hashtag for a focused search - #prettymeEndrucks.

So are you ready to participate? This is such a quick little pattern that needs very little thread! Come join the fun. Remember the butterfly beautification project where I received a thrilling response - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2018/04/make-me-pretty-please.html ? Can we expect a similar response this time, too?

to and fro inspiration

Pin It now!

Who inspires whom? What inspires what? How does it all work? Whatever the philosophical underpinnings, this is a simple post on what more the eye saw in Endrucks' pattern #3 besides the original edging, square motifs, and a fruit/flower bowl.

From Endrucks' edging #3, where I spotted a heart, Sue His Kid spotted a butterfly! https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/01/more-multiples.html
And both patterns are shared for you to enjoy and prettify further.
I changed 28 to 30 ds chain in my model above. Work moves counterclockwise in fs/bs tatting
My head is brimming with butterfly versions using techniques, effects, beads, etc.!
In Anchor size 20, the butterfly is less than 4cms across and 3.5 cms high.

This is my Eye Spy Heart from the same source. I had sketched the idea over the Square motif (scroll down to the last pic in that post), but it got forgotten among all other projects. Sue's butterfly motivated me to work it out and believe me, the above model is both my prototype as well as the final piece, finished in less than an hour, and no blocking required, either!
Stich count is notated over the model itself. I deliberately went clockwise for the chains, so that they could be worked frontside. You are free to move in the opposite direction.
Please note that I made a mistake in chain H which I noticed only now. Chain H should be 6ds, just like chain E.

Work in size 10 thread, since the finished size is small. My Heart, in Anchor size 20, measures less than 4cms across and 3cms high.
2 shuttles, CTM. 2 split rings and 1 mock ring.

UPDATE - Now both pathways for Heart are included in the same pdf - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t3DhpAeXUBi4oZegOty-q5Ux-zfntdYf/view

Pattern with diagram - one of the pathways.

The motif is worked clockwise all from the front, except for ringG. Hence reverse work (rw) only before and after ring G.

2 shuttles, continuous thread.

Sh1: r-A: 8 – 4 ∆ 4.

        r-B: 4 +(to ∆) 4 – 8. SS.

Sh2: ch-C: 3 (-3)x8, SS

Sh1: SR-D: 6 / 4 +(to A) 4. SS

Sh2: ch-E: 6

        SCMR-F: 4, rw

        r-G: 8 +(to ∆) 8. rw

        ch-H: 6, SS

Sh1: SR-I: 6 / 4 +(to B) 4. SS

Sh2: ch-J: 3 (-3)x8.

Tie off or tat a ring to anchor findings for earrings, pendant, etc.

enthusiasm interrupted

Pin It now!

Reworked patterns from Frau Eleonore Endrucks-Leichtenstern’s ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’, 1920, for Endrucks 1920 Project

Did Frau Endrucks enjoy a plate of lobsters or perhaps watching them frolic in the water? Is it what inspired her edging #38? Are they holding claws for a dance or to avoid the traps?! Douglas Hill spotted lobsters, too, and named it the Lobster Edging

Lobster Edging (#38) pattern pdf:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EiWX78pK8oY8shFVGBFjdJIO0a4Y7fLh/view

I think it will be a good idea to include a diagram eventually.

This colourway does full justice to the arthropod. One could easily add a few beads and tweaks to strengthen the lobster motif. Great for applique and cards or perhaps a charm. Or how about a brooch, earrings, or pendant?

Incidentally, he preferred to tat it with a ball and shuttle rather than 2 shuttles, as seen in this WIP model. And to get the shuttle in position, a lot of shoe lace tricks (SLTs) were used.
Will this should make it easier for a needle tatter to follow the pattern?

He presented this pattern at the Finger Lakes Tatting Group mini-conference in September 2021, thus spreading the word about our Project.
When the lobsters are flipped, as in the above image, they give a very different look!

In 2020, Douglas had also chosen pattern #41 where he visualized the paired chains as a long row of short and long candles with the end rings acting as flames.

In order to get the long chains to stand straight, he wrote the pattern using balanced double stitch (BDS) in late 2021, but by the 3rd repeat in above sampler, he decided that the BDS did not work.

He was ‘frustrated… at not getting the pattern to work or look right…Ninetta and I tried to help with our joint review notes and possible options. However, he could ‘no longer boost his long exhausted enthusiasm’ and left this pattern as well as our Facebook group in Dec 2021.

The above is his working of pattern #7 which he chose in mid-2021. Again, not happy with his tatting, he forfeited the pattern.

Douglas is quite accomplished with the crochet hook, tatting shuttle, knitting needles and lace bobbins, including designing some spectacular crochet coats. Although he is not a regular blogger, do check out some of his works here - https://queerqrafter.com/ or on Facebook.

🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞🦞

AlenAlea Rako joined our Facebook group by adapting the pattern #3 edging into 2 square motifs that can be tessellated into a larger fabric if desired. She also graciously shared the pattern.

Two Squares (from #3) pattern pdf:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eBwjp7wtMie1k2GeqrSUOerMH87uuu4A/view

In Square #1, she turned the corner inwards along the original sewing edge. This retains the beautiful lotus-shaped motif, with minimal changes to the original pattern.

Unhappy with the open space in the center of the square, she added an insert option for those who prefer denser lace. The insert is especially useful for larger lace fabric, providing additional sturdiness and durability.

It is always fun to ask ‘what if ….?’, and explore options! Hence this time, she turned the corner along the opposite edge resulting in an in-built denser flowery center. She shows us where we need to join motifs for tiling in her diagrams.

Unfortunately, Lea abandoned the pattern presentation maintaining absolute silence despite our private and public calls over the past several months. I have cleaned up the presentation (most of which she had approved earlier) and it is now available for all of us to enjoy.

Lea, too, is an accomplished tatting designer and hand dyes her threads creating beautiful colourways.

▦▩▦▩▦▩▦▩▦▩▦

Despite our best intentions life can get in the way of our commitments. Delays happen. Sometimes enthusiasm sags. Yet communication is key. As volunteering adults we should all be able to speak freely about any changes in commitment.

We thank both Douglas and AlenAlea for their contribution and hard work.

With best wishes and gratitude
muskaan and Ninetta

bowled over

Pin It now!

Can you imagine an edging taking on the shape of a bowl?! Paola Bevilacqua did just that! For the life of me I still cannot imagine how she visualized it in the first place!

free pattern (pdf link below)
This is the prototype she shared in the Endrucks 1920 Project FB group in January. She also uploaded stepwise pics with the pattern and I was immediately tempted to tat it. If you remember, I posted my version here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/01/who-knew.html along with my notes. And now you can see how horrible my bowl is compared to this, since I did not tension my long chains properly.

Paola tatted another version in metallic thread, and has removed the 2 side 'branches'. So we now have a choice to work it either way.
The bowl can hold anything you wish to make it unique. Fill it with colourful eggs - it will make a good motif for a handmade card?!
It was so gratifying when Paola loved my idea of placing flowers in the bowl and immediately adopted it by adding these freeform sprigs and flower!

And here's the good news - the pattern is now in pdf and available to enjoy. It is a one-page diagram-only presentation.
