January in July

Pin It now!

Yes, it's July, but the delay in blogging is from my end. It completely slipped my mind to share this lovely January Snowflake creation by Sally Biggers with you here. Never too late ... or should I say a bit early, LOL.

We've had a few tatters who have combined or rearranged parts from two of Endrucks' patterns to create a hybrid design. This model is one such - a combo of E34 and E43. Sally set out with the specific dual aims of  combining two motifs/patterns and creating a six-sided snowflake.

E34, from which the center is adapted, is actually an 8-repeat pattern. It was reworked and shared by Marina Mad Jar tatting - https://drive.google.com/file/d/11iVy2KdXkEJKW_4Hc_E4G4P29RuD1b9O/view

For the radiating arms, she chose E43 which was reworked and shared by Maria Grazia and Ninetta Caruso - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JRu7OggaSna0eXDRA2P18dRu6uE4-1J7/view

The original patterns are from Eleonore Endrucks' 1920 book, ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’ which has been trsnslated and reworked in the Endrucks 1920 Project.

It was while tatting this E43 (my 3D flower adaptation) for the pattern of the month game, that my memory neurons finally connected and nudged me into blogging.

Sally has clearly succeeded! Her use of different threads, including metallic, gives a beautiful finish. She explains her process in more detail in the pdf and graciously shares her pattern...

❆❄❅❄❆

While this is definitely on my to-tat list, Ninetta beat me to it! Following is her version which she tatted in April.

A vibrant play with two colours! It would serve well as a coaster, too. Or how about joining/tiling them for a larger piece.

Hope you enjoy this pattern and let us know about it. UPDATE: I just found Sally's blog and you can read about this snowflake here - https://myartbarn.blogspot.com/2024/02/havent-created-post-here-in-quite-while.html

A very special thanks to Sally, and to all who made this journey possible

E Hearts

Pin It now!

We have quite a collection of hearts derived from Endrucks' patterns and even more patterns where these hearts have been applied such as bookmarks, coasters, butterflies, etc. There are even more I have spied in other patterns that will hopefully come to life in thread some time. Or I might just share the idea for others to work out.

The above is only a fraction of the hearts/applications I tatted. Found these easily in the two nearest boxes I rummaged through. But there is not a single heart from pattern #1 here, nor butterflies, etc.
It was spur of the moment and I hastily put this collage together.
The above hearts are from E3, E5, E28, E32, E37.

The patterns have been derived by many members and you can download all patterns from the Hearts Directory here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view
And don't forget to look at the eye candy and other pattern directories listed at the end.

If you complete tatting your first pattern from our Endrucks' Collection and show us a pic, we will be happy to send you a little gift!

💖 Happy E Tatting ! 💖

barely in time

Pin It now!

This pattern was long since completed and waiting to be blogged on the 14th of Jan when we celebrate the entry of the sun in Capricorn. generically called Uttarayan (movement towards the northern hemisphere), a harbinger of spring and summer. A pan-Indian festival with numerous regional names and slightly different ways of celebrating.

unblocked motif

It also indicates the beginning of the harvest season. Diversity apart, sesame or til and jaggery or gur are the two common ingredients throughout, though the resulting sweet is prepared differently in different regions, but distributed around. It is only in Punjab, where a bonfire is lit to celebrate 'lohri', that corn, too, is popped and distributed. This is why I was waiting to share the pattern. This year both 14th and 15th were celebrated, hence I'm really not that late, LOL.

pinned picots

You might remember the range of design possibilities of one motif from Endrucks' pattern #15 shared here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-power-of-15.html

uncut picots

This time it is another doodle called E15 Ear of Maize, which with minimal changes can become a lavender sprig, any other inflorescence, wheat or other cereal spikelet, or even a feather. Perhaps you can come up with another idea?

snipped and trimmed picots

I have used 3 colours, but only one shuttle throughout. And you don't even need to hide the tails of the husk and stem! By force of habit, I forgot to do it in both models and hid most tails. Just leave ample lengths at the start and finish and trim later.

Hope you like this and enjoy tatting it.

second motif
The motif actually jumped out when I saw Paola Emilia Rotuletti's E15 Star pattern worked in shades of yellow by other tatters!

Add findings and we could have a pair of earrings or pendant? Perhaps even add beads to the kernels?

lighting up

Pin It now!

The 2nd candle motif is complete, with pattern. As mentioned here (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-power-of-15.html) I used treble tatting stitch chains alternating with regular double stitch chains to block tat this textured candle.

While I wasn't successful in obtaining the intended spiral effect, I have since found a solution and even tried out a very quick trial. I believe it should work. No pics yet.

E15 Candle Motif version 2 pattern pdf - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r3SXvBp6bTwrHxU0Y6veyl2M5lnqA1uv/view

The flame is slightly different from version 1, both derived and adapted from a motif of pattern #15 from Endrucks' ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’,1920.

The flame is tatted separately first. When we start the candle body, the first ring is joined to the final ring of the flame in onion ring style/join.

And the base or candle stand is also different.

I'm not at all happy with my tatting, especially the stand. I need a change of glasses to see more clearly! And working under a magnifier limits the fun. Hmmm, come to think of it, I could easily have re-tatted the stand from scratch! Perhaps I will.

If you tat it, please do share your improved versions! May these candles brighten up the new year as well. Happy tatting!

lets flourish

Pin It now! Symbolism of leaves can vary from culture to culture, yet there are some common themes such as  'fertility, hope, abundance, growth, peace, victory, death, and rebirth'.  To me, green especially sap green leaves signify spring season - freshness, hope, life. But it will mean waiting for a few months and I am eager to share the patterns. As we near the turn of the year, it seems as good a time to remember the positivity of greenery.

Earlier this month I had shared pics of these three leaves derived from part of a motif of pattern #15 from Endrucks' ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’,1920 (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-power-of-15.html). I finally have the patterns ready to share, too.

E15 Leaf Doodle #1 -

It curls a bit which I like, but can be flattened easily ....

E15 Leaf Doodle #2

I used both kinds of twisted picots here.

E15 Leaf Doodle #3

A tiny leaf, but adorned with dot picot and lock chains.

All three leaves are worked in one pass in size 10 thread and can be worked with ball and shuttle if we use a mock ring for the ring at the tip. They are quick to tat, too. Each of the pdfs consists of only 1 page.

Hope you like these and will enjoy a few moments to tat them up and create your own variations and flourishes!

the power of 15

Pin It now!

Technically, the power of a single motif extracted from Endrucks' pattern #15 (E15). Over time several patterns from her book have created a vast range of derivatives, eg., E1, E3, E12, E17, E31, E37, to name a few. E15 falls under the same category!

I've been having tremendous fun tatting up small doodles over the past few weeks. While it means I have side-lined my book editing (which I will take up in earnest again in 2024), I can't feel guilty over the brimming ideas and my largely neglected shuttles trying to give them form. Some pattern pdfs have already been shared with our FB group for the Dec game; others are in the works.

It all started when I spotted a ready-made tree motif in Endrucks' pattern #15 which Ninetta has updated with diagram and written pattern - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hl1EuK-E7tChkL4OsohWjtGLafhp7hcY/view

I quickly tatted up a prototype with size 10 thread and as you can see there isn't much room for change, right!
Model #2 in metallic cotton size 20. I had started this just like in the prototype, from the lower side ring on the right. This is an easier pathway to tat since the two sides remain unattached till you reach the trunk part. Later I strung beads to brighten it up.
Model #3 - Here I wanted to avoid hiding ends and also make it a tree ornament. Hence started at the top inner ring and ended with a split ring at the tip.
The same with a star to showcase an idea.
E15 TREE DOODLE Pattern PDF : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oq9kkuSN2e0Qnh0N1fUr00MT8HrZ7-cz/view

Hubby saw a bell in the tree! So out came more thread (size 10) and this stylised bell pendant or ornament was born.
The same but this time in metallic thread size 40.

A comparison of the sizes. Hubby wanted an inward curve at the bottom for a more realistic look. Another version for a future project ....

E15  BELL  DOODLE Pattern PDF :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/17m9gxw2vG1oS_mrawfmZI27PpLZ9xFhK/view

Inverted, the bell looked like the bodice of a lady's gown or the torso of an angel. Rough sketch to tackle in the future.
If the sides were brought closer together, the motif would work as a flame!

Tatted with one shuttle and the two threads combined.

Flame needs a candle (or a diya), and these were my first trials

E15 Candle version 1 using block tatting. Can be done with ball and shuttle.
It was Ninetta's idea to add a little base ring to the flame.

E15 CANDLE. MOTIF pattern PDF :

Version 2 of the candle is worked alternately with treble stitch chains and double stitch chains. This is still incomplete as I got sidetracked with other motifs 😁

My objective was to create a slight slant in the block tatted chains, but I couldn't achieve it. It will take more experience than I have to get the chains to tilt.
However, my 3rd version is going to use Helix tatting - not only will I get the spiraling effect, it will also be 3D!

Meanwhile, leaves cropped up, too! This is the first model with a mock chain acting as the central vein, and ending with a Josephine chain stalk.
This is how it looked fresh off the shuttles. However, it flattened after blocking and has stayed flat, although I like the 3D option.
E15 Leaf Doodle #2 using two types of twisted picots - one for the tip and one for the stalk.
The 3rd model started off with a different idea but midways I let my shuttles take over and ended with this. Lock chains make up the vein and stalk. I don't like the picots here!
All 3 together, and I still have so many ideas I'd like to tat!

What are leaves without a flower and its the season for Poinsettias - a no-brainer.
After the first layer of 3 petals, I continued with a lower layer of slightly larger petals. This is still a WIP where I need to add the yellow center, etc.
QUESTION: Are 6 petals enough or should I add one more large petal below? I don't want it to look too symmetrical and adding another petal will move them slightly.
I value your opinion.
After tatting the first 2 petals of the poinsettia, they looked like a great idea to tweak into a Butterfly or wings for an angel!

TIP: In all models I have deliberately used a self-closing mock ring (SCMR) at the tip for 2 reasons -
1. in most cases the doodle or motif can be worked without the need for a 2nd shuttle;
2. more importantly, I find it sits much better than a thrown ring would have without anchoring picots at its sides.
I made a hitch (unflipped half-stitch) after closing the SCMR.

Meanwhile, one of our prolific members created a Star with the same motif! Ninetta and I quickly compiled a pattern pdf for it and included it in our Dec game. There are several more patterns to choose from in our game this month. Hopefully you will join us. All links in the side panel of my blog at the very top.

I will try to share the pattern for these remaining models, too.

hunting

Pin It now!
E9 - The Blue Crab by Ninetta Caruso Nov2023

Hunting the last entire week or more has left me beady-eyed and addle-brained. And the very severe air pollution didn't help either. But I got it all done and  we can now proudly claim that our categorised Directories of patterns/models derived from Endrucks' 1920 book, ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’, are all done! Yes, hunting for images to upload to the four new directories and update the older ones. We now have 15 Directories! How many patterns arose from the original 44? No idea! Why not take a peep at the new collections to see the wide range created by our talented tatters and designers?!

You can find The Blue Crab pattern in this directory! direct pdf link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Rj9fNq6myV17M1vAk2OWJrsjT2rBVob/view

Edgings Directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AY5AMicLd72yzv_KIn8E61l-2XhIxu_NYgCmsdhIl8U/view

A short description for each directory is also included now, alongside the link.
We may still face issues with a few models - Which category do they fall under? Well, we'll crawl across that bridge when we come to it.

The other task that kept me beady-eyed was updating the EP doc [Endrucks 1920 Project document - https://docs.google.com/document/d/17LEVftXweztBIOWh4sL4BB7bX65ssoOsOn4oXIgCepY/view].

Since the derivatives earlier displayed under 'Gallery of Possibilities' have been shifted to their respective directories, the 'Gallery' is now being used to showcase visuals of what/how word is being spread by our members... be it in the form of exhibits, publications, teaching, etc.

It is our endeavour to keep the EPdoc for the reworked Original patterns only and as far as possible to shift all derivatives and variations/adaptations to other documents so that they do not become too large and unwieldy. I am still working on cleaning this up. I've made a rough list of the derivatives from each pattern and now to make a note/link to the respective category/directory in the EP doc. So some hunting is still called for; I'll get to it after basking in the sun and sands for a bit (it rained this morning hence this crab has cone out to play), giving my brain something else to focus on!

Hope you find patterns to tat for the coming holidays and then beyond!

Ninetta and I wish you happy tatting always! And we'd again like to thank all our original and new volunteers who keep this Project alive and kicking, clawing their way into collections!!!

wanna multiply

Pin It now!

Well bowing to popular demand yesterday, I worked on the pattern presentation today. Remember, it is still a prototype pattern that could do with some improvements. If you give it a go, please do share your model pic and notes. We can finalize the best fit and include it in the pdf with due credit.

E37 Multiply Me Flower Flake by Muskaan, Oct2023 pattern - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-CSg9lDj56eogt2hLPrT8yvYP2kd7LYA/view

My notes and a couple of ideas are included in the pdf, which I don't want to repeat here.
Hope you enjoy tatting it and please do send in any feedback you have.

UPDATE: I had another idea - using the same stitch count as the flake, tat only Five repetitions for a Star!
