festival tatting

Pin It now!

I should've posted this days ago but my head is immersed in another project and days kept slipping by. As always happens with me, I start off with a small goal but it keeps expanding and I seem to fall into a black hole, LOL!

This is Manju Talekar's brilliant adaptation of a leaf pattern into an artistic collage of one of the most beloved and vastly invoked god with an elephant head - Ganeshji! There are interesting stories of how he ended up with the head of an elephant! Manju also added his vehicle, the mouse, and his favourite plate of modaks/laddoos. I'm sure you will find it interesting to read up a bit more about this god who is welcomed home every year and then sent off into the sea! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganesha  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganesh_Chaturthi
Among Hindus, any festive occasion, rite or ritual, starts with invoking his blessings for an auspicious start. Even wedding invitations have his image or mantra inscribed right at the beginning.

 E15 Ganesh by Manju Talekar (2024) pattern pdf for #Endrucks1920Project -   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EgXVMpAEsXA0CASayy_rShQHjGGbbQvn/view
Adapted from E15 Leaf Doodle #1 (by Muskaan) which in turn was adapted from Eleonore Endrucks' pattern E5 in her 1920 book titled, 'Die Schiffchen Spitzen'.
There is also a short explanation of a Hidden Picot in the PDF.

Here you see the leaf doodles from which she made the head and used part of the motif to create the rest of the body. The entire collage is worked in several separate pieces and then assembled together. She meant it for a greeting card, but ended up framing it.

I worked the pattern as an unofficial test-tatter while doing the pattern presentation. I still need to complete the ears before I post my version. It tats up very quickly!

With Ganesh Chaturthi on 27th (through to 7th Sep) there is still plenty of time to tat your idol in thread and add to your decorations when Ganpati Bappa comes home!

PLEASE mention the name of the designer, the name of the pattern, and the hashtag #Endrucks1920Project whenever you post your version, as a courtesy to the designer.

Many many thanks, Manju, for this lovely model and pattern!

a 3 in 1 leaf

Pin It now!
Ninetta has announced our new game for the month of October however I couldn't post my second submission for September in time even though I finished tatting it on the night of 30th Sep ;-D

What can I say! When I have multiples of any motif I enjoy rearranging them to see what shapes emerge. I've already shown several such for the E15 Leaf Doodle #1. This motif is so adaptable that it boggles my mind. (All links related to E15 leaves are at the end of this post)

This time I took all three versions (tatted back in Dec2023) and thought the arrangement looked very much like the leaf of a grape plant. All that was needed was to tat an edge all around them, keeping them in place and wouldn't take too long.

I placed them again on blank paper and drew an outline in pencil. Took a pic. I referred back to the pic several times to confirm where to join.

Used Victorian sets with a few picots thrown in for a textured outline. A darker shade of thread was an oopsie, not deliberate, LOL.
TIP: In Victorian sets, make the picot between 1st half-stitch set and 2nd half-stitch set for it to face outward. And a slightly longer picot.

I was simply winging it and have no stitch count. There is a very short split chain at the base to center the stem. I've left a few inches of tails for future addition.
Tatting didn't take long as expected, but unfortunately  I couldn't include the intended bunch of grapes in time. Task for future, hopefully within this month.

If you look closely you will also see a bit of a mess in the center. No sweat! In nature perhaps a little birdie or a caterpillar shredded a portion and that's what it is ;-D

I think this looks better in real than in the pics - hubby identified it immediately as a grape leaf - and I could've done a better job. Nevertheless the joy counts for a great deal! Call it Leaf Relief!!!

leafy birdie

Pin It now!

I wasn't going to participate in this month's game thinking I might not be able to find the time. However our members are always so inspiring and following my own declaration that it tats up quickly, one night I picked up my materials. As it is, I've been on a good tatting spree, making progress on the Glossary samples and entries.

Game of the Month in Endrucks 1920 Project FB group: Leaf Me Endrucks Sep2024
Pattern used : E15 Leaf Doodle #2 (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1i8XWpjtcrvK8C_cfa8KyGvJiXNn_KPP7/view).

Laurel Leaf : I visualized a long narrow leaf and simply winged it. The right side is basically the same pattern with more repeats. The return back is my variation on the go.

Birdie #1 Idea : At this stage doesn't it look like a bird looking over its shoulder?!

Birdie #2 Idea : And at the very end, from this angle, it is definitely a birdie!
One can add details or leave the impressionist look.

The leaf from another angle.
In Sanbest #11, three strands, it is 5 cms long and 1.5 cms wide.

When I tatted this, nobody had yet worked it in metallic. And also because I wanted it to hold its shape and be able to twist it if needed.... because ....

it was to go on a paperclip!
A curled up dried rustic leaf on a paperclip.

Or flattened out - leaf or birdie on paperclip.
Worked with one shuttle and ball. Hence I had to use mock rings in a few places on the way back.

At work.
So one more variant gets added to the power of this E15 motif! More adaptations and ideas in links listed below. And several more to come from our participants when I do the round-up!

I have one more idea in mind. Let's see if it can be done in time ....

Like I said, I've been in a very relaxed frame of mind probably because I could tat almost daily and yet make consistent progress on the book. However, my blog did get neglected since I tried to stay focused. Multi-tasking is not all it is touted to be, LOL.

leafy game

Pin It now!

As mentioned in my previous post, our September game in the Endrucks 1920 Project Facebook group has begun. Leaf Me Endrucks (#LeafMeEndrucks). Instead of rewording, I am going to copy/paste the instructions.

GAME OF THE MONTH – Leaf Me Endrucks Sep2024

🌿🌿🌿Use the hashtag #LeafMeEndrucks and #Endrucks1920Project when you post for this game.

We have several beautiful leaves in our Foliage Directory. However, for September we have decided to use only three E15 Leaf Doodle patterns because the possibilities to play with these are endless!

This is all you have to do:
🍃🍂Tat as many E15 leaves as you like!
(PDF links are at the end of this post)

🍁🍀🥬🌿And if you want to extend your fun ….. You can tat one or more leaves from any of the three patterns. Then you can go ahead and make any tweaks you want such as ----

🥬Change the shape – make it long, broad, bent, twisted, 3D. No two leaves are identical, so you have free reign!
🍁Change the colours depending on whether you visualise them as nascent spring, mature summer, verdant monsoon, marcescent, or fall leaves, or funky psychedelics.
🌿Apply any tatting effects, techniques, or textures, to emphasize certain characteristics.
🍀Embellish with decorative picots, beads, buttons, or cabochon, … 2D or 3D
🍂Use as desired – on a card, as appliqué, as tree ornament, as jewellery, as decorative piece, garland or wreath, etc.

🌿🍁🌿Tell us about your visualization, share your notes and stitch count, tell us about the threads you used, show us your process pictures,.....

🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿Always use the hashtag #LeafMeEndrucks & #Endrucks1920Project

They tat up very quickly and don't require too much thread. And creating little tweaks can be guaranteed fun for both new and experienced designers! Hence we expect to see a lot of leaves breezing into our group! Ninetta and I are ready to rake in all your leaves, so time to get started!

🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿Download the three patterns (click on each link) ---

And not that our talented members need any ideas on how to use the leaves, but here are a few arrangements of E15 Leaf Doodle #1 - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2024/09/e15-leafy-bonanza.html

🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿

So, if you wish to join us, we would Love to see your versions. Contact either Ninetta Caruso or me through our blogs, etc. (links on the top right of my blog page). If it is your first Endrucksian pattern, a little gift awaits you.

💗💗💗A very special thanks and hugs to Ninetta for allowing me a break from hosting the games these last few months! There is a whole bunch of tasks, mostly behind the scenes, that require our attention during and after each game; not to mention other related tasks in the Project and our other commitments. She has been a constant source of support and shoulders the burden unflinchingly! Words cannot express my deep gratitude. 💗💗💗

🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿🌿🍁🍃🍀🍂🥬🌿

I'd like to share some details about the cover pic in a future post, including my Inkscape hack. The fall colour leaves are tatted by Ninetta, the green ones are mine.

E15 leafy bonanza

Pin It now!

Now this was tatted back in May for the InflateMeEndrucks game and my inner child, as usual, wanted to arrange them to see what new shapes emerged! But the old woman in me promptly forgot to share the pics. LOL. Fortunately, I found them right on time for our new game this month - Leaf Me Endrucks! More about that in the next post.

Although the game is confined to tatting leaves, it will be interesting to see how they will be used/applied. To that end Ninetta and I thought it okay to share some ideas.

Let me simply show you what I have within my limited imagination. Of course, some tweaks will be required - something added, something deleted, some colours changed, and so on - to bring them to life. I sincerely hope you can find more ideas and figures beyond the ones my eyes saw and write it in the comments.

But first, the pattern is E15 Leaf Doodle #1 (derived from Endrucks' 1920 pattern #15) with additional picots along the edge for sewing (immaterial to the shape). Also, if the chain H is shortened to 4ds instead of 6ds, the leaf turns out flat. And since I tat frontside/backside, the leaves are mirror images. PDF download link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NL5KHsLxOHkfILCTTKojfhHy6B9v9EG3/view
 1. Heart
2. Betel leaf ; Hazelnut ; Onion

3. Masquerade Mask

4. Spy Goggles ; Cat Eyes ; Angel Wings ; Butterfly Wings

5. Earrings ; Pendant ; other Jewellery pieces

6. Jewellery ; Earrings ; Pendant ; Brooch

7. Tatting Shuttle ; Hair Clip or Hairband Embellishment

8. Spindle Motif. Can be joined along the tips for a long broad scalloped border
or along a side for polygonal shapes.

9. Angel Wings ; Bracelet

10. a big fat Pheasant ; Hedgehog ; Turtle ; Weevil ; Kiwi ; Rhea
and if you feed in 'arrangements' in the search box, you will find many more such arrangement ideas for various types of motifs, including from Endrucks (but not all are showing up...perhaps I can do a roundup at some future date to refresh my own memory!)

lollygagging or not

Pin It now!

Whatever it is, I'm sure happy to pause and share this slightly mixed bag of fun and possibilities! Let's start with the Tatted Fringe and adaptations and practice pattern I shared in my last two posts.

Yesterday Elisabeth Dobler wrote to me and sent me some photos which I share here with her kind permission. And this is what she says -

Today our tatting group met again and I showed them the new technique of Corina Meyfeldt and you. It was so funny - we had so much fun! Some members of my group were so creative and tried new ways to apply this new technique. Initially I wanted to teach them the various possibilities of the captured picot but we didn't have enough time - we tatted 3 hours only the new technique!
Thank you very much for sharing this new skills!

From the top and the side!
Oh the possibilities of colour, size, and form!

She and her group are so creative! Soon I will share her beautiful application of the captured picots.

💖💖💖

Almost simultaneously I received this message from Stephanie Wilson -
I like your fringed star. The colors are pretty and I don’t mind ‘messy’ fringe. It looks nice to me.
Got me thinking – do you think we could do something similar using the daisy picot technique? Long picots *between* the daisy picot stitches, then cut them after we’re finished? I don’t have time to try it now, but it sounds like it would work….in my head, at least.

And the answer is yes! sorry I didn't get time to try it out, but this is the only caveat to keep in mind - if we attach the fringe to the core thread, it will take up space like any stitch. Hence if a pattern is not written with a fringe in mind, one must take care to adjust the total stitches accordingly. Of course, this can be countered by adding the fringe to the picot thread, and if one wants the fringe facing down/inwards, then tat a downward or inward facing picot on which you attach the fringe!
💖💖💖

I didn't mention it in my last post, but I had used the spot fringe as thorns in the tiny Thorny Wreath from 2015. (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2015/12/thorny-wreath-pattern.html)

And this Christmas Troll (Ruth Perry's pattern) where I frayed the picots for an afro, could well have had additional fringe to give it a denser style (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2016/12/a-new-look-or.html)

And of course, the recent Fringe Star practice pattern and ideas was shared in the last post.
💖💖💖

Unrelated, but I wanted to update, hence adding it here. While looking for something in my choco-tatting boxes one leaf fell out which I noticed after the box was kept back.It was the same leaf I'd wanted to tat for the pumpkin, but didn't have time. Serendipitous! Of course I simply tied and whip stitches the tails to hide them and voila it looks kind of complete now. This is the E25 Extract Me Pumpkin by Julie Myers with my little tds variation and the addition of E25 palm leaf. veg patch game

Pin It now!

Game of the month in the Endrucks 1920 Project FB group this month is to tat either of two pumpkin patterns derived from pattern #25 - one is flat (Julie Myers) the other 3D (Daniella Galli). Obviously I would've liked to tat both, but went for the quicker option.

Julie Myers' adaptation of E25 Extract Me Pumpkin pattern PDF for #VegPatchEndrucks Aug2024https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WKxGqijegF911nOvbmNjUuPVOQkHNZyF/view . Incidentally she derived this during our Sep 2022 game - ExtractMeEndrucks (as did Daniella!). Hmmm, one month shy of exactly two years!

My version reflects the type of pumpkin I enjoy eating during summer months - the green pumpkin (see next image). It is not fully ripe, has a mottled green skin and pale yellow pulp with a few scattered seeds. I visualized her pattern as a cross section of the whole pumpkin - the rings as white seeds, the pale yellow pulp, and a green skin.

https://images.app.goo.gl/qpWbJWvj4BTVDEU5A
This is the only good image I could find which is identical to what I buy. Most images have an orangish pulp and green or brownish skin. Perhaps next season I'll remember to take a pic when I buy it.

I make the sabzi (kaddu/sitaphal) in summers till raw mango is available. Cut into pieces (one can keep the skin on or peel it), also dice some raw mango into small cubes, mix in spices, temper with whole fenugreek seeds and asafoetida, cover with plate and microwave for 3 minutes, stir and zap for another minute or so as required! It is such a quick-cooking dish and tastes wonderful with roti, puri, paratha, rice.
I have a traumatic experience with the kaddu raita, though! Mummy once made it and it was horrible. But she insisted we finish it and I shudder ever since, despite enjoying various kinds of raw or cooked/grated veggies in beaten curd, LOL.

Wanted to use beads for seeds, and had even selected the pearls. Then decided to tat in 3 colours.

NOTES -

  • In Gopi size 40 threads, the main body is 4.5cms high and 4.2 cms wide.
  • I used a single shuttle wound with the white thread. Yellow and green remained on their respective ball.
  • Started with false ctm - pulled out a short length of yellow, and finger-tatted the first chain, leaving a starter picot. Then continued with white shuttle, hiding & snipping off the extra yellow length.
  • Tatted continuously, all clockwise. I didn't feel the need to turn work after every round. Especially since I was using the one shuttle and the colours positioned themselves as needed. Just left a very small picot at the start of each round to join back to.

  • Treble tatting on the outermost round. While not strictly realistic since the actual peel is thin, but tds is fun and gives a nice finish and texture I hope. Would look good for a floral effect!
  • I didn't count the tds, eye-balling the length of each segment by placing it along the corresponding chain segment below it.
  • TIP: After the required tds, I worked in 2ds, lock join, 1ds, p, 1ds. Now join simultaneously through both the hidden picot of last tds and the picot of new segment, and continue this as the 1st tds of new segment. Repeat at each join. This gives a nice, clean dip (You can see the difference on the join between 2nd and 3rd chains on the right side. The dip is not pronounced because I experimented without the picot, joining directly). Another advantage is that there is no 'gap' at the base of the join. I think it came off nicely.

  • The stem encapsulates all the tails and since I had used leftover thread, I simply ended with the long tendril, without extending the stem further.
  • I had intended to add leaves, but one of our participants has already done a stellar job of it! Perhaps I will still tat a leaf or two from the same 2022 game - this would act as an incentive to share the E25 palm leaf pattern which inspired Elisabeth's Multifaceted leaves. See how the branches keep multiplying?!
I enjoyed tatting this piece despite the somewhat unorthodox colours which don't immediately identify it as a pumpkin, and hope that soon I'll get a chance to tat Daniela's 3D version, too.

We do have a few other veggies in our Endrucksian garden patch as inspiration, including another 3D pumpkin (from E12) by Krystyna Mura. Check them out in the Foliage directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EIgPKHH9V2Dg4gDZNefVfSVNRZQC6LbSfhiaWA_s-G8/view

Many many thanks to Julie and Daniela for graciously sharing their patterns

inflating the leaf

Pin It now!

As part of the ongoing #InflateMeEndrucks game in May, I couldn't resist inflating this leaf! The E15 leaf doodle post was among the top 5 for several days, enticing me constantly. The motif is such a quick tat, that I succumbed.  All links at the end of post ....

This time I made it into a pendant. Although I wouldn't mind tatting a pair as earrings.
The original motif on the left. However since there were absolutely no picots along the edge, I ended up tatting 2 motifs, adding tiny picots on the outer chains.
TIP: If the Chain H is reduced from 6 to 4 stitches (left motif), the leaf comes out flatter.
TIP: Notice that the two motifs are tatted as mirror images. I followed the same diagram, but started with a backside ring.

I had also sewn in the bugle bead vein in both.
This time I followed Pitsibaa's instructions to the T. And as I had stated, it is certainly easier to sew individual motifs than to join as one tats. More freedom, hassle-free tatting, ....
And I also remembered to blot out any extra glue solution, LOL.
After it had dried, I added the beaded chain for the pendant.
I didn't stuff the center, since I wanted the beaded veins to show through.

Future Idea - Increase the length of the joining picots between the motifs instead of keeping them tiny. So that when it is stiffened for inflation a filigree effect is visible along the seams!

And on a side note, here's another way to inflate leaves, LOL.
This savory snack or side dish is called 'patra' or 'patode'. Arbi/colocasia leaves are layered, rolled, steamed, and sliced. They can be eaten as is (ones on the right), tempered, 'roasted' in little oil for crispiness (like the ones on the left), or deep fried. In Delhi, we don't normally get arbi leaves in the market, so I used to grow my own in pots every monsoon, using the vegetable bulb itself. Then the bought veggies were probably treated and they stopped germinating. Seeds didn't work either.

Yesterday, my lovely hubby surprised me by finding the leaves in an online store (they have a couple of outlets as well) based in Delhi and bought them without my knowledge! He paid more than the cost of the 6 leaves as delivery charges but it was so worth it. Very good quality, large leaves. The rolled log was at least 12 inches long. After 15 to 20 years, I finally got to make and eat these. Thankfully I hadn't forgotten how, LOL. Plenty of slices still in the fridge.

TIP: I used the soft silicon spatula to apply the paste between layers. It was so easy, quick, and mess-free!
