veg patch game

Pin It now!

Game of the month in the Endrucks 1920 Project FB group this month is to tat either of two pumpkin patterns derived from pattern #25 - one is flat (Julie Myers) the other 3D (Daniella Galli). Obviously I would've liked to tat both, but went for the quicker option.

Julie Myers' adaptation of E25 Extract Me Pumpkin pattern PDF for #VegPatchEndrucks Aug2024https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WKxGqijegF911nOvbmNjUuPVOQkHNZyF/view . Incidentally she derived this during our Sep 2022 game - ExtractMeEndrucks (as did Daniella!). Hmmm, one month shy of exactly two years!

My version reflects the type of pumpkin I enjoy eating during summer months - the green pumpkin (see next image). It is not fully ripe, has a mottled green skin and pale yellow pulp with a few scattered seeds. I visualized her pattern as a cross section of the whole pumpkin - the rings as white seeds, the pale yellow pulp, and a green skin.

https://images.app.goo.gl/qpWbJWvj4BTVDEU5A
This is the only good image I could find which is identical to what I buy. Most images have an orangish pulp and green or brownish skin. Perhaps next season I'll remember to take a pic when I buy it.

I make the sabzi (kaddu/sitaphal) in summers till raw mango is available. Cut into pieces (one can keep the skin on or peel it), also dice some raw mango into small cubes, mix in spices, temper with whole fenugreek seeds and asafoetida, cover with plate and microwave for 3 minutes, stir and zap for another minute or so as required! It is such a quick-cooking dish and tastes wonderful with roti, puri, paratha, rice.
I have a traumatic experience with the kaddu raita, though! Mummy once made it and it was horrible. But she insisted we finish it and I shudder ever since, despite enjoying various kinds of raw or cooked/grated veggies in beaten curd, LOL.

Wanted to use beads for seeds, and had even selected the pearls. Then decided to tat in 3 colours.

NOTES -

  • In Gopi size 40 threads, the main body is 4.5cms high and 4.2 cms wide.
  • I used a single shuttle wound with the white thread. Yellow and green remained on their respective ball.
  • Started with false ctm - pulled out a short length of yellow, and finger-tatted the first chain, leaving a starter picot. Then continued with white shuttle, hiding & snipping off the extra yellow length.
  • Tatted continuously, all clockwise. I didn't feel the need to turn work after every round. Especially since I was using the one shuttle and the colours positioned themselves as needed. Just left a very small picot at the start of each round to join back to.

  • Treble tatting on the outermost round. While not strictly realistic since the actual peel is thin, but tds is fun and gives a nice finish and texture I hope. Would look good for a floral effect!
  • I didn't count the tds, eye-balling the length of each segment by placing it along the corresponding chain segment below it.
  • TIP: After the required tds, I worked in 2ds, lock join, 1ds, p, 1ds. Now join simultaneously through both the hidden picot of last tds and the picot of new segment, and continue this as the 1st tds of new segment. Repeat at each join. This gives a nice, clean dip (You can see the difference on the join between 2nd and 3rd chains on the right side. The dip is not pronounced because I experimented without the picot, joining directly). Another advantage is that there is no 'gap' at the base of the join. I think it came off nicely.

  • The stem encapsulates all the tails and since I had used leftover thread, I simply ended with the long tendril, without extending the stem further.
  • I had intended to add leaves, but one of our participants has already done a stellar job of it! Perhaps I will still tat a leaf or two from the same 2022 game - this would act as an incentive to share the E25 palm leaf pattern which inspired Elisabeth's Multifaceted leaves. See how the branches keep multiplying?!
I enjoyed tatting this piece despite the somewhat unorthodox colours which don't immediately identify it as a pumpkin, and hope that soon I'll get a chance to tat Daniela's 3D version, too.

We do have a few other veggies in our Endrucksian garden patch as inspiration, including another 3D pumpkin (from E12) by Krystyna Mura. Check them out in the Foliage directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EIgPKHH9V2Dg4gDZNefVfSVNRZQC6LbSfhiaWA_s-G8/view

Many many thanks to Julie and Daniela for graciously sharing their patterns

and to Ninetta for hosting the game!

association

Pin It now!

When we come across a new tatting term/technique, always try to place it within the larger set of techniques you already know. You will be surprised to find that you might already know the technique or at least parts of it. And then learning becomes easier, smoother, and associative.

One of the first messages waiting for me yesterday morning was about the Loop Tatted Ring (LTR) in the Christmas Star pattern by Krystyna Mura, an E31 adaptation. [pdf: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fz0Hd9jgGnS_qWKayw4UX2Ikr-mp-npb/view]. It starts with a LTR over a bead.

Despite the video and pictorial links suggested in the pdf itself, Ulrike found it difficult to grasp. I, too, watched a few videos, consulted a few tutorials and found that it could indeed be difficult to grasp, despite the resources themselves being good.  For one, they were all about a LTR on a ring which meant there are too many loops to consider, keep track of, and can become confusing.

That got me thinking and here's how I went about it. Deconstruct the LTR and you will find the basic concept, or at least some steps, is something you might've done before.

Step 1. Can you finger-tat?

Step 2. Have you tatted a single shuttle split ring (SSSR) Mathew Takeda style?

If the answer to both these questions is YES, then you are well on your way to tatting a Loop Tatted Ring!

Very soon, she came back with her SSSR braid , having consulted a few resources listed in my Resources page [https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/p/tatting-resources.html]

Step 3. Now tat an entire ring using only the finger-tatting method. After all finger tatting with a loop employed for part of the segment of a SSSR is exactly what you do in LTR, but for the entire ring!

And by jove, she got it! All within a few hours.

Step 4. Now we can tat the LTR over a bead easily as shown in several tutorials.

I had written the entire post yesterday but then thought a limited/specific pictorial would help other tatters facing a similar issue, to work this lovely Star pattern too. Hence today I created a stepwise how-to for Rounds 1 & 2 of the pattern. I also took the time to read Miranda's post and pictorial again after several years and discovered the similarities of association! She also gives a nice history of this technique. I apologise for the unintentional repetition. Unfortunately Sabina Madden's site is down though she is trying to find another server to reinstall paradisetreasures.com.

LOOP TATTED RING for E31 STAR - pictorial pdf - https://drive.google.com/file/d/19q6JKdOyACqh8oz-Z0vzHgh-YCIZ5xBd/view

Now a Loop Tatted Ring or LTR is not limited to a LTR on Ring (LTROR). It can be used in several different ways, including on a chain as a thrown ring [https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2021/08/thrown-floating-and-8-rings.html pages 7-8 in the pdf] or after a chain.

Here it is used as a central ring. We could've used a normal ring or a mock ring. But with both methods, we would not have been able to seamlessly add the bead through both threads to resemble the bead on a picot. LTR allows us the freedom to work continuously with the bead. In a lot of circumstances LTR allows us to tat something that would normally require a 2nd shuttle.

snowflake me roundup 1

Pin It now!
It is so difficult to choose just one lead pic as you will see scrolling down!

And so the roundup for our November event is ready, although tatters are still uploading pics from time to time - the latest being just a couple of hours back!

Pattern by Muskaan: Antiks Snowflake with an adapted E42 center: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1U5J5sjuAA7D0qGPOGnK9RJ83MKdNkWSZ/view
Supplement with stepwise pictorial and other tips, options, and tutorials: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VFk4ZnBT9ObJxnEKgI6hUkk2wtd_gOD4/view
It gives us immense pleasure to see that several of our participants took the time and effort to learn 'new-to-them' techniques through our Supplement!

Join Ninetta and me as we share the talents of our participants -

1. Ada Marie Diaz - chose to tat the flake in individual rounds using different colours for each! A Christmasy effect.

2. Amanda S Lohnes - her first attempt at split chains and mock rings!

3. Anita Barry - test tatted the snowflake several months back (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/11/flaky-antics.html).
She wrote -
Loved tatting this project in HH Lizbeth and Handy Hands metallic thread (although I had to pull hard to get the rings to close using the metallic thread).
And this is her 8-arm version. As I had said in the above post, I forgot to change the 8-point repeat (as in original Endrucks' #42) to 6 repeats in my written instructions and she went ahead and worked this beautiful version.

4. Anna Bonelli - pristine tatting as usual!

5. Anna Tedesco - always the multiplier, with a beautiful triplet in different colours.

6. Antonia Lai - a regular and enthusiastic participant learned split chains from Ninetta's video (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hKfqa3LHnUor9UAen7sdqPgzZe0elU2I/view) and her first attempt at ANKARS, too.

7. Catia Lemmetti - pleasantly surprised us with this beautiful bounty today!
The two trees are from our Dec game.

8. Debra F Cox - wrote -
...what a fun motif to make! ANKARS technique is new to me and I am still mastering split chains. All in all so fun to learn. I am told no 2 snowflakes are alike lol and mine is extra special with 7 points. Thank you for your patience and helping me learn new techniques on my tatting journey!
The small stars are designed by Ellen Lai. All motifs worked in Lizbeth color 190 silver thread size 20.

9. Jane McLellan - tatted this back in June when I had gifted her the pattern, and wrote about it in her blog - https://janemactats.blogspot.com/2023/06/in-which-there-is-tatting.html

10. Jiamrat Supapol - has quick shuttles, too! She tatted two flakes in different colourways.
Beautiful colourway - like a pond with reflections.
This one reminds me of corn fields!

11. Katie Verna - worked her cheerful magic using AltinBasak, #50, color 3053.

12. Krystyna Mura - worked two models in her pristine style ...
She used beads in the center and around the central ring.

And wowed everybody with this spectacular rendition in several different shades of metallic threads and strategically placed beads!

Hungry to see more? Join us again in part 2 of the #SnowflakeMeEndrucks roundup.
...to be continued

Many many thanks to all our wonderful participants! You make us want to do more!
