It is a simple motif that can be worked with a ball and shuttle and the beads are not pre-strung. 

It is a prototype I made to show beads over/on a picot. These beads are slipped over the long measured picots at the time of joining. Or they can be slipped over the picot while it is being formed, and held with a paper clip or marker. I prefer the former to avoid beads and clips getting in the way of smooth tatting.

I deliberately chose to do a mock ring since I did not know how big I wanted it. And then made an under-over or alligator join across the start of the chain. There are several ways to make the under-over join (alligator join is only one of them). The diagram in the PDF is simply a guide. You can choose to tat with two shuttles if you wish to empty them of leftover threads. You can even work the mock ring as a true ring and without need for an under-over join. 

For a plain, flat leaf, avoid any beads on the picots. 

I used 4mm beads, but you can choose smaller ones and adjust their number accordingly. Oh dear, I've been so flaky lately that I forgot to take a pic of this on a chain. Hmm, not too difficult to imagine, right?

This is such a quick tat, really, and easily adaptable to any thread and bead size. Or go all around for a floral motif! Hope you enjoy the pattern.

 Now this was tatted back in May for the InflateMeEndrucks game and my inner child, as usual, wanted to arrange them to see what new shapes emerged! But the old woman in me promptly forgot to share the pics. LOL. Fortunately, I found them right on time for our new game this month - Leaf Me Endrucks! More about that in the next post. 

Although the game is confined to tatting leaves, it will be interesting to see how they will be used/applied. To that end Ninetta and I thought it okay to share some ideas.

Let me simply show you what I have within my limited imagination. Of course, some tweaks will be required - something added, something deleted, some colours changed, and so on - to bring them to life. I sincerely hope you can find more ideas and figures beyond the ones my eyes saw and write it in the comments.

But first, the pattern is E15 Leaf Doodle #1 (derived from Endrucks' 1920 pattern #15) with additional picots along the edge for sewing (immaterial to the shape). Also, if the chain H is shortened to 4ds instead of 6ds, the leaf turns out flat. And since I tat frontside/backside, the leaves are mirror images.  This time I have not delayed, not by much essentially. A couple of months back I came across an Instagram post on tatting and their profile said they were a German group of 15-20 members with a common passion for occhi! I messaged them about our Endrucks 1920 Project and so began a lovely friendship with Elisabeth Dobler (she manages the account and is the founder of the group 'Occhi Freunde Oberschwaben'), a very talented tatter who enjoys pushing the boundaries and exploring new techniques.

Inspired by my E25 palm leaves, she belted out a range of effects from one basic model! We decided to call these Multifaceted Leaves. She graciously accepted to share the pattern and we worked together to create a presentation that is hopefully clear and easy to follow. She also made a presentation in German. Multifaceted Leaf #1 (basic) 

This is the basic pattern which can be embellished as desired. She has worked the leaves in a clever and interesting fashion, entailing encapsulation. 

While the detailed pattern for this basic leaf is given, for the others an explanation of the effect/process is provided. Instead of repeating the description here, I request you download the pdf and understand the intricacies.

Multifaceted Leaf #2 - 

She has used metallic thread to embellish the leaves.

Here the leaf starts at the mekik oyasi ring with cut picots and progresses back and forth to ensure it is worked in one pass. The crosshatch filling is so impressive.

Would these make a bushy mustache or even eyebrows, LOL? 

Simply add a stemmed flower in the center for a nice composition.

This is but a small slice of the enticing array of possible effects one can play with, using the basic model!

Patterns 24 and 25 from Eleonore Endrucks' 1920 book, Die Schiffchen-Spitzen, are very similar; E25 has a bit extra on the E24 as base. E24 was reworked by Ninetta Caruso for the Endrucks 1920 Project and you can find her work here ---

Elisabeth Dobler has published two books with tatting patterns - Tatted Necklace with Roses, and Tatted Faces! Oh the faces book is really interesting and fun! 

Just like with Sally (in my previous post), it is always a pleasure to correspond with someone who is receptive, prompt, and willing to learn and share mutually! Seeing her interest in new techniques and effects, I told her about Ninetta's flickr account and blog and her new Captured Picot. Elisabeth got right down to it, diligently learning the captured picot, teaching it to her group and also applying them creatively! Wish I had taken her permission to share the pics here ... perhaps in future. Hexagons always appeal to me - be it in any art or craft form. Tatted snowflakes are aplenty, but the focus is on tips/points with 'invisible' or inferred sides. 

Addionally, I love when chains are used to outline previous elements, highlighting aspects with width.

No wonder this pattern was such a pleasure to tat - a clear-sided, textured, yet elegant pattern.

I follow Anna's blog and love her beautiful tatting and other projects. She shared this pattern here recently. I chose a lighter outline to represent the flower in nature.

Clover is a cleverly designed pattern. Joining to the vsp at beginning of chain in each leaflet creates a charming center which is evident in the left leaf and much more in Marya's model. http://mariyas-tatting.blogspot.com/p/free-patterns.html

The left leaf follows her pattern verbatim, split chain and all.

The right one, tatted first, is a bit of a lazy tatting attempt. Here, I worked all 4 leaflets completely, instead of a split chain,  and then tatted the chain stem.
