This little flower was tatted several days back and I was going to  post the pattern along with a pictorial for overlapping split rings. But that's going to take a couple more days to write the post and ink the pics. So this prototype pattern is for you to play with on Valentine's Day. A little late, but flowers are the flavour year round! 

Tatted in Anchor size 20 (similar to Lizbeth 10), the flower itself is only about 1.5cms high and 2cms wide. The rest is stem with leaves.

The idea came to me while preparing a pictorial for Barbara's overlapping split rings. These form the petals, joining each petal to the previous one and the last to the first. It is a simple picot join just like when you do stacked rings in ANKARS keeping one ring above the other.

Little 3D Flower

Abbreviations: SR=split ring ; vsp=very small picot; fhs=1st half-stitch; -=picot; shs=2nd half-stitch.

Start with two colours wound in two shuttles. Shuttle 1 - petal colour; Shuttle 2 - green colour.

With shuttle 1 in hand or as the active shuttle, start the first split ring ... (refer image above)

SR1: 9 vsp 3, 4fhs - 4shs, 3 vsp 9 / vsp 3.
SR2: 9 +(to SR1) 3, 4fhs - 4shs, 3 - 9 / 3.
Repeat SR2 two more times.

SR5: 9 +(to SR4) 3, 4fhs - 4shs, 3 +(to SR1) 10 / 3.

NOTE: I made 5 petals (5th not seen in above WIP image) but in the 5th one, I increased the stitch from 9 to 10 in latter half so that it overlapped better. Adjust to ensure the overlap remains consistent. Join 5th petal to the 1st one, arranging the overlap consistently.

FYI: (4fhs, p, 4shs) is the node stitch which creates a dimple in the ring.

Do not cut threads, continue for stem. You can string or join a bead to the center of the flower using any one the threads. 

Stem is a Josephine or spiral chain. Use whichever half-stitch you wish.

NOTE: For leaves I used the Petal Ring by Maimai Kaito (2016) Instagram, YouTube, following Lesson #178 by Karen Cabrera Unfortunately it was difficult to photograph the curvature and sharp tip of the leaf though it is visible in some pics.

Choose your own stitch count for the leaves. The upper leaf is slightly smaller than the lower one.

Continue the stem for desired length.

I see a lot of scope for improvement but that, too, will have to wait for another day. Feel free to tweak and improve and show me what you come up with! I went with tinted pink for a rose or cherry blossom. Which colour and flower would you choose to tat with?

E15 leafy bonanza

 Now this was tatted back in May for the InflateMeEndrucks game and my inner child, as usual, wanted to arrange them to see what new shapes emerged! But the old woman in me promptly forgot to share the pics. LOL. Fortunately, I found them right on time for our new game this month - Leaf Me Endrucks! More about that in the next post. 

Although the game is confined to tatting leaves, it will be interesting to see how they will be used/applied. To that end Ninetta and I thought it okay to share some ideas.

Let me simply show you what I have within my limited imagination. Of course, some tweaks will be required - something added, something deleted, some colours changed, and so on - to bring them to life. I sincerely hope you can find more ideas and figures beyond the ones my eyes saw and write it in the comments.

But first, the pattern is E15 Leaf Doodle #1 (derived from Endrucks' 1920 pattern #15) with additional picots along the edge for sewing (immaterial to the shape). Also, if the chain H is shortened to 4ds instead of 6ds, the leaf turns out flat. And since I tat frontside/backside, the leaves are mirror images. 1. Anna Bonelli - is adept with both needle and shuttle. However, since there is a shuttle in the pic, it is safe to assume this beautiful decoration or pendant is done with shuttle.

2. Brookie Heightsmen - Always one to think divergently, she adapted two E41 motifs to create this cute beaded hot air balloon equipped with the tiny basket (probably from E44). "...up up and away in my beautiful balloon".

3. Lella Loops - is an accomplished needle tatter. Here's what she says - "My small entry for #InflateMeEndrucks game, from pattern E28. It naturally tends to cup so I thought it was perfect. I insert a little organza pouch with dry lavender flowers. Liz metallic, needle 7."

4. Manju Talekar - Manju joined us in late April and has already participated with such enthusiasm and talent in all our games since. She sent us 3 models and though they do not strictly conform to the rules of the game, we are most happy to showcase her beautiful works, all from E12.

"From original Endrucks pattern #12, Angel in white, I modified the skirt with a lace pattern in round and more flare. In the Wings added some small picots in between the large ones. I found it difficult to take a picture showing three dimensional pattern."

Deliberately made in flag colours, it shows how easily it can be adapted to other colours.

5. Margaret Davies - is a real trooper! Despite life getting solidly in the way, she adamantly whipped out this cute 3D butterfly from E32. Notice how the minimal joins give it an open and relaxed appearance.

Originally I put a bead in the middle of the onion ring, somewhere the bead did not like the middle, it might have been too big, this time I tried again the photo is not easy to take, so I hope you can see it is 3D I put two butterflies together next time I am going to try some beads."

6. Muskaan - I've already said all I had to in my respective posts (links under each pic). This inflation became so addictive that my entries inflated to 3! And the third one (tree) has 3 motifs instead of 2.

7. Ninetta Caruso - quickly tatted a model for our game before it was announced so that we had a range of possible ideas to inspire participants! A master of miniature, later she tatted the cutest little coin purse.

Her work in progress. Gives us an idea of how tiny her pin cushion is! And its all handmade!

Keeping the E30 Square pattern intact, she merely added a ring at each corner to span the puffed pin cushion. This modification is inked in the above image.

She chose the Slim angel from the E7 pair of Slim and Chubby Angels for this game. She inserted organza inside and placed it on a postcard for a beautiful backdrop!

Doesn't it appear as if the angel is having a blast flying across the lit sky! It's also a good idea for a Flying Kite.

To sum up, we had 8 participants submitting 13 models. And the range is quite wonderful!

Our hearts are inflated with joy and satisfaction at seeing these amazing models! Hope these re-interpretations inspire in future, too.  Many thanks from Ninetta and me.💗

 After a long severe winter spell we are in the throes of a long hot summer spell since the start of May. The maximum temperature hovers between 40C to 45+C and now the minimum is up to 33-34C as well. And so a reminder of the cool climes in the land of firs, pines, and spruces! Christmas in June.

This was my 3rd submission for the May game - Inflate Me Endrucks.

I already had the first two E15 tree doodle motifs in my stash and I just needed to tat one! These are such quick tats, done in a single sitting. Pattern: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oq9kkuSN2e0Qnh0N1fUr00MT8HrZ7-cz/view

Again I followed Pitsibaa's tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0MInK7b65Q to sew and stiffen the motifs. I left the base of the trunk and part of one side open for stuffing, while sewing down the rest. 

TIP: This time I sewed through the stitch caps rather than picots, thus leaving free picots along the sides for a more natural tree-like feel.

A large bead was inserted in the trunk. 

Then a sequin base was glued to cover the open trunk base and keep the bead inside. This was tricky coz the sequin wouldn't adhere.

TIP: Use a tiny piece of double-sided tape or a piece of tissue with glue on both sides. This insertion allows the sequin to stick and stay.

The 3D tree from 3 different angles ....

On two motifs I sewed faceted tear drop crystals to cover the open space.

Gluing the two star sequins at the tip was tricky, too. I used the above described tip to join the two sequins with a deliberate shift to get more spokes.

This tree is free-standing. Since one of old motifs had a loop to hang as a tree ornament, I let it be. Thus this motif has both options - to dangle or to stand!

I apologise for not responding to emails or leaving comments in blogs, though I do try to read everything - will catch up soon, promise. Part of the reason is the weather-induced sluggishness and partly because my head is back into editing (book as well as helping out with a couple of pattern presentations). I do make quick FB forays, though. In fact even this post was delayed because I just couldn't focus on the little details that needed to be shared. Yesterday and today the temperature slid down a bit but with increased humidity, and the prediction is for rise in temps again. World over these freaky extremes are getting more and more common. We need trees, lots and lots and lots of trees!!!

 As part of the ongoing #InflateMeEndrucks game in May, I couldn't resist inflating this leaf! The E15 leaf doodle post was among the top 5 for several days, enticing me constantly. The motif is such a quick tat, that I succumbed.  All links at the end of post ....

This time I made it into a pendant. Although I wouldn't mind tatting a pair as earrings.

The original motif on the left. However since there were absolutely no picots along the edge, I ended up tatting 2 motifs, adding tiny picots on the outer chains.

TIP: If the Chain H is reduced from 6 to 4 stitches (left motif), the leaf comes out flatter.

TIP: Notice that the two motifs are tatted as mirror images. I followed the same diagram, but started with a backside ring.

I had also sewn in the bugle bead vein in both. 

This time I followed Pitsibaa's instructions to the T. And as I had stated, it is certainly easier to sew individual motifs than to join as one tats. More freedom, hassle-free tatting, ....

And I also remembered to blot out any extra glue solution, LOL.

After it had dried, I added the beaded chain for the pendant.

I didn't stuff the center, since I wanted the beaded veins to show through.

Future Idea - Increase the length of the joining picots between the motifs instead of keeping them tiny. So that when it is stiffened for inflation a filigree effect is visible along the seams!

And on a side note, here's another way to inflate leaves, LOL. 

This savory snack or side dish is called 'patra' or 'patode'. Arbi/colocasia leaves are layered, rolled, steamed, and sliced. They can be eaten as is (ones on the right), tempered, 'roasted' in little oil for crispiness (like the ones on the left), or deep fried. In Delhi, we don't normally get arbi leaves in the market, so I used to grow my own in pots every monsoon, using the vegetable bulb itself. Then the bought veggies were probably treated and they stopped germinating. Seeds didn't work either. 

Yesterday, my lovely hubby surprised me by finding the leaves in an online store (they have a couple of outlets as well) based in Delhi and bought them without my knowledge! He paid more than the cost of the 6 leaves as delivery charges but it was so worth it. Very good quality, large leaves. The rolled log was at least 12 inches long. After 15 to 20 years, I finally got to make and eat these. Thankfully I hadn't forgotten how, LOL. Plenty of slices still in the fridge. 

TIP: I used the soft silicon spatula to apply the paste between layers. It was so easy, quick, and mess-free!
