live and kicking

Pin It now!
...tatting in my pocket
2 years back (huh, July again!) I posted a few of my verses on ‘Tatting in my Pocket’. On 3rd of this month Noelene Lafferty – the originator – revived it in the Just Tatting group on facebook!
If you haven't, do check out all the new contributions members made there.

I wrote a new verse immediately …
((English teachers, please excuse the poor meter! ;-D))

I have simple Pony shuttles
Threads I have galore
With tatting in my pocket
I couldn't ask for more !
- July 3, 2019

I also shared my old verses there. But it is so addicting – lines kept whirling in my head and even though I didn’t get around to sharing them on facebook, I’m doing them here now.

To save our ecosystem, I'd
like to plant many a tree
but with tatting in my pocket
I'm on a lace making spree !

Ma taught me cooking
Pa taught me cycling
with tatting in my pocket
my hands are always singing
- July 4, 2019

And then some more ….

Sitting in the balcony
Watching monsoon shower
with tatting in my pocket
I ... have the Power

I don't need yoga
Nor do pranaayaam
Tatting in my pocket
Is my way to Dhyaan
- July 7, 2019

And more recently in O’Claire de lune’s post on lace v/s tatting, this is what I posted

In the world of lace
Tatting has no place?!
Tatting is alive in my pocket
‘n’ will ne’er vanish without a trace.

The flower in the pics is an old prototype - the 3D Carnation. Tatting is alive and kicking !!!

tatting in my pocket !

Pin It now!

Yesterday I came across this thread on Craftree, started by Grace. She shared this link to a global compilation of tatting-related verses. Here’s what she says :

It was on e-tatters, and it grew for quite a while, with more and more people adding verses. Maybe we can add some more verses? The only rule is, the third line must include "tatting in my pocket".

There were already some excellent verses there and I jumped right in. All through the morning verses kept popping into my head. I’m just relieved it didn’t lead to any sugar/salt mix-up in the kitchen ;-P
Meant to be stand-alone, I’m sharing them all together here and would love to see you pick up the gauntlet :-)

No pocket, yet a pocketful of verses –
None the worse for want of a pocket ;-)
Okay cheesy, but I can't resist puns :-D

Except for the 1st and last verse, all the rest have at least one tatting technique or term in it. I have edited a couple of lines to fit into the meter. Hope you enjoy ...

Tatting In My Pocket !

Chores are physically stressing
Global news is so depressing
But the tatting in my pocket
Is always very refreshing !

My head is in a swirl
Shuttles ‘n’ threads are in a twirl
And the tatting in my pocket
Is full of rings in a Curl

Non-crafters may think I'm daft
They might call me a loony
But with tatting in my pocket
I won't just stop at a Cluny !

'I'm going through a designers block'
One often hears this talk.
Use the tatting in your pocket
To unlock with a Block !

The hegemony of a Trefoil
I fully intend to spoil
Since the tatting in my pocket
Is creating shapes from a Quatrefoil !

Husband rrrrrolls his eyes hiding his smiles
When I ask for more supplies
He Knows the tatting in my pocket
Will make lace for miles and miles !
                            - ©muskaan  July 14 2017

With exciting Center Court matches, not much tatting accomplished. But here's a glimpse ...

Four shapes derived from the initial design hack ! Tatted in size 40.
I’ve now tatted all 4 shapes in size 20 to determine picot size before I present the final pattern. Will share those pics with the pattern.

These are the various Quatrefoil Triangle trials. I was too lazy to block them for a proper pic, but these generally lay flat.

Arranging the triangles into a hexagon – it makes a nice coaster in size 40 and can be tatted in one pass. Magic Triangle, you say ?! Hardly ;-P

Why waste, right ?
Retrieved #4-6 from the hexagonal scrapyard – sewn in layers, added a bead, etc. I didn’t spend time shaping or curling the ‘petals’.
Noticed the 3 leaf rings enclosing the stem ? Kinda cute, no ? I'm going to use this in future!

That’s all from me for the present …
Have a great weekend
and

let there always be tatting in your pocket !

were they hieroglyphs ?

Pin It now!
free vintage edging pattern in modern notation
this post is in a lighter vein, though it involved serious work

Hieroglyphic, err, Arsenic and Old Lace
dedicated to the wonderful Online Tatting Class

A mummy wrapped in old lace,
I sought to make new and replace
                                            with minimal invasion –
                                            a diagram and notation.

There arose a cry in class
‘how to tat this is one pass?’
To a new diagram it led,
                                            but wasn’t clearly read.

                                            The new sequence highlighted,
Why was not it sighted ?
                                            Was there a real glitch
or words were like hieroglyphs ?

                                            Such tricks plays our brain
This is arsenic, pain not again !
The new mummy they turned over
To decipher the top as the lower !
                                                                           -- muskaan, May 31, 2017

I promise, je promets, lo prometto – the last and final revision of this edging. And I do apologise for putting my dear readers through this yet again - March, April, and now May, oops - the mummy rises again !

This is an image from the original Georgia sent me, for working out the sequence and diagramming. Here all 5 rows were tatted separately, with tie and cut after each.

During my first revisit of the tatted edging from Coats and Clark (Book 121, Pattern 295), without specific guidelines, I didn’t want to change anything, except climbing out of rows for a continuous tat. Hence rows I to IV were tatted as one continuous unit. Then tie and cut. And row V was worked separately.

Some tatters wondered how to make all 5 rows in one go. Hence I included this in a revised diagram (below), to be read in conjunction with the original modern notation, and all links and information were provided in that single page (shown encircled)
Yet confusion persisted. Eyes went straight for the diagram, skipping the written matter which was highlighted through colour coding, or within boxes and the tatting sequence was the first thing on the page ! They were Not hieroglyphs, were they ?!

I recently finished reading The Brain by David Eagleman and it is an 'eye'-opener to see how our brain takes over all our perceptions, sensations, knowledge, learning, comprehension, actions and reactions.

Anyway, they solved it by turning the page upside down ;-D (Ingenious lot here, though momentarily blinded by the diagram perhaps, ;-P !)
Why ? Because then Row I became oriented correctly – the way we would tat it. Another TWoT lesson for diagrammers.
All this could’ve have easily avoided if I hadn’t tried to avoid some extra work (yeah, yeah, a stitch in time …. and all that jazz ;-P) I should’ve re-oriented the pattern (in pic below) for the revised diagram, but thought it’d be too much work. It is easy enough to flip a diagram in Inkscape; turns out it is just as easy to flip the numbers – individually or as a group !!! I did have to reposition, but it was all fairly quick work. Another happy lesson learned too late :-)

So I give you yet again, the re-revised reoriented and this time stand-alone pattern for the edging. download reoriented diagram-only pdf here.

Since I was going through it all again, and I didn't want to show you the same old pic, I tatted another sampler, this time in black size 50.
And I also made another pdf this time with the pattern in written notation too.
download Complete reoriented pattern pdf with diagram and text here

I know you must be bored, but hey, “I’m picky” ;-P And hopefully no hieroglyphic this time!
I will be striking out all previous pdfs to avoid confusion in future.

Thank you Georgia and the Online Tatting Class
for new perspectives,
and for making me work harder to improve J

tribute to a tatter and ode to tatting

A tatting tribute to Irene who passed away recently ...

Heart of the Butterfly
Irene Woo

UPDATE May 9 2017 : This is the updated pattern by Joelle Paulson
In keeping with the season,  I chose spring colours. Tatted with 3 strands of embroidery thread/floss.
It is such a pretty pattern ! Now that I Googled it, I find that it is also called 'Butterfly Heart'.

I will share my own notes and the revised pattern in a future post.
That butterfly has one wing smaller. Instead of retro-tatting, I made a Josephine ring head and wrapped the tail thread around to simulate a body.

Why I Tat?
by
Sariah Joy

ßTßùßõß{ß

I have often wondered why I tat - why does it consume me and fascinate me ? Most articles made are for beauty & decoration, not functional or wearable, and get stashed on completion. It is time-consuming unlike crochet or knitting and so much more difficult to unravel after a mistake. Yet, give me a shuttle any day!
Perhaps it is that lace, besides being pretty, is small enough to experiment with and stash away too. That small piece is complete in itself, yet does not take up space. The tools & materials are minimal, too, hence easily portable when traveling.
It does keep my hands 'productively' occupied, my brain challenged, and my curiosity sparked.
Or may be some brains are just wired to tat - our default is tatting, even if we enjoy other crafts ?!

Why do you tat ?!

on TIASes, tatting on paperclips, and block heart !

Fish Paperclip
Phyllis Schmidt
Georgia has a great new surprise project every month on the Online Tatting Class. Phyllis’ tatting on a paper clip – a new pattern every month through this year ! The first one for January is this cute fish.
I had thread left over from a recent project – a size 3 or 5. So the fish is a bit large, but my first on a clip and I like it ;-P And it was such a quick tat, too, except that I forgot where to add the bead and ended up having to undo the half-tatted ring. Bead has to be on the shuttle, Not around the hand, silly me ! See, I can even make it stand upright  :-D
Hmmm, I just noticed. See, instead of printing the pattern, I had quickly sketched the diagram and jotted a few things. Only now, as I compare her tatted model with mine on the large screen, do I notice the difference in tails (compare the caps).

Please note : To be sure, RODS is reverse order of a normal Flipped double stitch, not the unflipped second side of split ring, which is called a Reverse Stitch & it subsumes a reverse order but of unflipped half stitches.

Tat It And See 2017 – Day 10

Sniggering BC3

Clueless still
my Day 10 I send

All my guesses
didn't pass the test
Setting it aside
I'll, errrr, take a rest

I'm still going with a lady in a gown and this is her hair/hat/hood ; the rest of her ensemble shawl or cape will appear next, crossing over the neck with an alligator 'pin' (join) and tying off at that tiny little picot on the right !

Large Block Heart ....

I have so much lined up to share, but don't want to make this too lengthy ... so we'll all just have to wait a while longer ;-P But here's a peek into a single Block Heart - a larger one that can be used as brooch, pendant or lapel pin, or perhaps something else. This was the project with size 3 or 5 thread with which I made the fish above. It's still a work in progress, though, and I used a different join.

Many thanks to Jane and Phyllis for sharing their delightful patterns and I look forward to tatting more of them !

happy tatting, till then

Days 2 to 4 of Jane’s fun guessTATting game - TIAS!

Tweedle dum or tweedle dee
whichever will it be ???
A lady's skirt or a cart wheeled,
Jane, our brain is a-twiddle !!!

Jane’s pdf urls are as interesting as her pattern bits. Day 2 was “twiddle your brain” ! It got well and truly twiddled . The top looks like the start of a skirt or gown but turn it over and it could be a wheel !
Day 3 – no guess. Totally stumped. I know she intends to return to the horizontal rings, attaching to the small picots there. But ….

Day 4 – I’m back to my skirt/gown guess ! Yes, we need to attend the TIAS ball that Jane will throw for her followers ;-P And it’s going to be gorgeous dress with those flowing Z chains !

Z Chain :  From what I understood,
the 8 stitches in Z chain pattern represent (1ds,1rs)x8
where ds is the normal stitch, and rs is the unflipped stitch
Double stitch : 1ds = (1fhs,1shs)

Reverse stitch : 1rs = (1ushs,1ufhs)

Also, I had to make a lock join at the band ring (on the way 'up') , but a normal picot join on the solitary ring at base. Hope it is fine.
btw, Day 4 url has this 'up the khyber' ! It is a dark tunnel through this guesswork mountain !

snowflake and TIAS

Pin It now!
blocks in snowflake and first block of TIAS !

Ninth Day of December Snowflake
Lene Björn

I was inspired by the same 2-colour working of this flake on Craftree as credited and also worked by Eliz here. And so, one of the threads had to be white.

I raided my size 20 stash looking for a colour to go with the white (which is a bit thicker than it’s counterparts), checking each by sight and feel despite my catalogue . I found only one that came closest in thickness – this aqua blue-green 4054-0185 !
For block tatting, equal thickness is critical.

I followed the same block tatting method as described in this snowflake. It works for me. The switching shuttles is too cumbersome. I prefer the flipped/unflipped (DS/RS) with a half stitch riser.

TWoT (This Way or tat?) note : For directional tatting or fs/bs tatting, start the chain backside with reverse order of half stitches. The thrown ring will also be tatted backside.
The snowflake is tatted in one continuous pass in clockwise direction overall.
But can it be tatted all from the front ?

Experiment with all frontside tatting : I tried a little experiment here. Since it is tatted in one pass, I wondered whether I could avoid reversing the work (RW) by using direct/reverse stitch chains and a reverse ring in the centre and tat the whole snowflake from frontside only.
Yes, reverse ring can be applied to thrown ring in this situation.
But I did not like the effect. As you can see, the chain arch is not as smoothly curved, and the base picot space is of 2 colours since core thread is white and ring stitches are green !
Better to avoid the reverse ring and stick to reverse work and normal thrown rings !
BUT, I now realise that I made a mistake in making the ring. If done correctly,  it would work except for 2-coloured base 'picot'.

Future Idea : Using a largish picot at both the inner and outer turns, tat the entire medallion in block tatting. An undulating braid of block tatting !

Techniques : block tatting, thrown rings, fs/bs tatting
Finished Size : 3½”

I Love the negative space in this flake. I'm pretty happy with this snowflake working – blocks and all. Do you share my feeling?

Renulek's Snow Doily - 1

Pin It now!

Been a long time since I posted. Blogging took a backseat, but not tatting.
I think this little verse says it all ……

TATIFICATION !

With tatting in my hand
Life will never be bland .
With threads well-stored
Who can ever be bored ?!
With patterns galore
I still collect more more more.
With shuttles by my side

With tatting in my hand
How can Life ever be bland ?!
Oooh yeah, my ecosystem has been tatified !

Astral  Fireworks !!!

Renulek’s Snow Doily is a 9-row/round doily that has snowflake & star medallions/motifs to justify the Snow doily theme ! Part of the reason I chose to make this doily, even though I Really like her Honey Napkin, is because it combines many patterns that I have wanted to make – the side-ring ‘clovers’, the long ‘wheel spokes’, & the snowflake! So instead of tatting them separately, it’s nice to have them all in one project.

It is going to be part of a thank-you gift set along with the Craftree Mystery Doily. This, besides the fact that at the time of starting this doily, I had a limited size 40 colour stash, has determined my choice of colours. But the placement of colours was determined by my conceptualization that led to the term ‘Astral Fireworks’ . Why ? I will explain in the concluding part , when I complete the doily … a little mystery never hurt anyone ;-)

Thread : Anchor Mercer Crochet Cotton size 40.
Cream : 4054-0386
Chrome Yellow : 0302
Brown : 4054-0355

Techniques used in Rounds 1-4 :
♥ FS/BS (RODS) tatting, ♥ 2 shuttles, ♥ Slope & Roll join, ♥ Long Picot, ♥ Graduated/decorative picots, ♥ Shoe Lace trick (SLT).

Notes / Jottings

v      Round 1-4 can be done with one shuttle & ball. But I used 2 shuttles. Now that I know how to easily & quickly load bobbins (thanks to Frivolé & Kathy), I no longer shy away from it ;-P
v      Arrangement of colours in Rnds 2 & 3 was inspired by Elfiona’s doily (post #125) . The tiny rings looked like little stars !
v      I used Slope & Roll join for Rnds 2 & 3 to hide the colour blip. In size 40, it works fine !
v      Graduated Picots for the rings in Rnds 2 & 3 are in keeping with the Mystery Doily. (not perfect without use of gauge, but “enjoyment even at the cost of precision” is tatting my excuse,… errrr… motto :-) ).
v      Rnd 4 required a Long picot in 1st of the 4 ring sets; and SLT (shoe lace trick) to switch colours.
v      Except for an initial hiccup when starting Rnd 4 (orientation-wise), it went very smoothly. At end of this round, the doily measures just under 8” (19.5 cms).
TIP : It might be a good idea to start Rnd 4 with an outer ring. This will help when closing out the round in the end.
v      I wanted to make the individual motifs of Rnd 5 first & join as I tatted Rnd 4, thus working two rounds together as I did in the Wiosna here. However, the all-cream snowflake looked out of place. So I have held back till I get a better feel for what colour combination & placement to use for the snowflakes, starlets & clovers that make up Rnd 5. Now that Rnd 4 is complete, I have been trying out a few combos & think I know what I want …

In Conversation ...
It is very difficult to photograph this … no background except the binder cover seems to do some justice to the colours (yet leaves out the lovely sheen in the threads). And the next rounds will no longer fit within the blue confines … hmm…

My blog-trotting has taken a backseat as well. What with loads to do on the side, chatting on Craftree, & most importantly a moody server, I can't leave comments on posts as I used to. But I do try to follow along as much as possible. I hope the situation normalizes. Till then,

happy tatting :-)))

Tatting technique : Curled Rings Concept

Pin It now!
Ninetta’s Curled Rings - The Concept

This little ditty is dedicated to you & your rings (Layered & Curled), Ninetta,
that I have been going round & around & around ever since you posted about them ! ;-P

‘Ring’ing in the new !

Universe is made
of swirls and curls

Not straight lines
but quanta and rings

Not flat and visible
but waves and strings

Not uniplanar
but 3Ds and multi-Ds

So here  is  Nin
With her Curled Ring
and Floating Layers
In Modern Tatting !
muskaan
April 25, 2015

You’ve heard me talking (ad nauseum?!) about, & applying Ninetta’s Curled Rings these past few weeks.

She graciously granted permission to do a tutorial on these rings. And that is how it would’ve been – a pictorial series of options on how the curled rings could be made, used, applied ; the possibilities, the potential. But options kept growing (including valuable suggestions & tips from the designer herself) & my brain went into a swirl with so much ….
Now, after stepping back for a few weeks, & a few posts later, I came back to this.

Something had changed, though. Something had evolved. 'Behind the scenes' !
If I had the perseverance, I would approach the pictorial that will follow a bit differently. But I don’t have the inclination to start afresh & re-photograph each step (My apologies. You are welcome to ask questions, & contribute suggestions, though).

Now, as far as I know (& I don't know much about history, diversity, evolution of tatting, so jump in to correct ), Ninetta's Curled Ring is a completely New & Original technique .
Hence, a bit of conceptualization, an overview seemed in order, instead of simply jumping into a how-to pictorial . The following is my own perspective/understanding, based on my limited experience & experimentation with this …  I have tried to add some collated images & relevant links to images/patterns wherever possible.

1.  What is a Curled Ring ?

It is a normal closed ring, folded over itself, which may or may not encapsulate another element such as a chain or a ring. This horizontal folding over creates a cup-shaped dimensional effect, due to half the ring ‘disappearing’ behind.

  • Any ring can be curled, so long as there is a picot towards the tip, to anchor the fold neatly.
  • The ring is made normally ; closed normally.
  • Then it is folded horizontally & a join is made through the picot, at the base of the closed ring.
  • Voila ! A curled ring is formed.
And the thread is back in position to where the ring had been started , ie. at the base of the ring ; and pattern can continue as desired.

2.  Can all Rings be Curled ?

Any, & I stress, Any ring can be curled . And the ring is made “normally”, & the curling is effected only after closing the ring. All it needs is (1) a very small picot in the right place (ideally at the very tip) which will anchor the fold/curl ; and (2) a ring large enough to make the curling possible & visible.
One can make it with a normal ring, onion/concentric rings, split rings, large rings, single shuttle split rings, & so on. ( I have tried all these myself. One can play with more types of rings, rings within rings, .... )
Beads can be added too !

3.  What about Folded Rings ?
(click on each heading for link to respective page)

1.
Fold made before ring is closed
Fold made after ring is closed
2.
Fold due to insertion of half sts
Ring is normal, all ds same
3.
A Segment(s) within ring folds
Entire ring folds in half
4.
Ring takes on diverse shapes
eg. crescent, paisley, …
Ring shape remains constant ;
after curl, a cup-shaped half circle
5.
Dimensionality negligent ;
manifests thru’alteration of ring
shape only
Clear & distinct dimensionality ;
ring has ‘2 layers’ after fold

Wonder how Folded Rings would look when Curled ?! Another experiment down the line ;-P

4.  Can there be Differences in the Curl ?

Yes, minor differences can exist , although basic concept remains same . The differences can be due to personal preferences, or requirements of a pattern. eg.
  • Curl Up / Curl Down : Is the tip of the ring (picot) brought up to lie over the base when curling ; or is the tip folded in downward direction so that the base lies on top of the picot when joining ?
  • Curl Over / Curl Around : Does the ring curl over itself or does it curl around a chain or ring, thus encapsulating that element?
  • Curl In / Curl Out : Does the curl face inwards or outwards ? Usually, a Curl In encapsulates an element.
  • Join : Curl can be anchored using a Normal Picot Join, Slope & Roll Join, or a Lock Join.
  • Curl can be Single or Multiple – in the sense that the curl/join is made through a single picot (normal ring, onion ring, split ring) or the join is made through several rings simultaneously.
  • The length of picot that is anchored while curling, Or a space of bare thread left before anchoring, can also alter the look of the curled ring ! A vsp will curl the ring into a perfect half folding over itself. But a longer picot or bare thread space can ‘show’ more of the curled ring, like an cascading overlap.
  • A picot that is offset, ie. not in the centre of the ring, will give a slight unsymmetrical curling of ring.
  • Very large rings may also behave differently especially when curled over themselves (as in the image above)

5.  Why Curled Rings?
But beyond that, I believe I found a couple of other practical uses, especially, if like me, you don’t have the necessary jewelry-making supplies on hand.
  • As in my pendant above, where I used a triple onion ring as a pendant hook, through which the chain can be inserted. Not only is the curled onion ring sturdy, but it also continues from the pattern itself.
  • Similarly, for a bracelet, I made a curled ring at one end & a normal/Josephine ring at the other. The curled ring can be inserted through the normal ring & bracelet can be 'locked' in place; to ‘undo’, simply tug on the curled ring. It acts like a bracelet toggle !
6.  Notation for Curled Rings

Can we denote them as CR or C-R ?
eg. for a normal ring, CR would’ve sufficed.
But if it was a split ring, then CSR or C-SR ? Or in case of a single shuttle split ring : C-SSSR ?

Or should we simply say 'Curl Ring' after the stitch count for ring is given ?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I believe, after reading the above, it will be clear that the technique is extremely simple & all it needs is creativity application. I hope at least a few of you will be tempted to try it out without the need for any tutorial . I will, however, start posting the tuts, especially after having worked on them for so long (And made you wait ;-P)

Your thoughts & all suggestions are most welcome
& eagerly awaited.
I thank you for reading through, if you have ;-P
happy tatting & experimenting :-)
