design tatting

Pin It now!

Its been a while since I updated the entries that came in for my DAL 2025 challenge. I shared the first 7 versions (with patterns!) here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2025/03/colour-me-happy.html. Now, the next one to start the challenge was Donna McDade who made 8 versions (3 up from last year's DAL)! I will dedicate an entire post to her next time, since there is a lot of good news to share and celebrate. Meanwhile, these are what my other wonderful participants sent in .....

All versions of Muskaan's DAL 2025 Challenge can be found here -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view

Anita Barry

See the dense 3rd round? Those are Louise Uteg's stacked rings from her 1970s original doily!
I think this 4-round version looks like a nice Christmas wreath.

Padma Mandayam
Round 3 was inspired and adapted from Lella Loops' version, with the addition of a 4th original round.
Written pattern is shared in the google doc.

Janet Crow
A colourful spring version with inclusion of butterflies and more rounds. She graciously presented the pattern in a PDF. https://drive.google.com/file/d/16wfGTDxjNovnfWMYmZfqIgn1tmwDzIgY/view
The motif glued to her hand-sewn bag in which she carries her tatting supplies to meetings, etc.!

Lillyan
Janet's 14 year-old talented granddaughter is trying her hand at many crafts, including tatting! Her version is like clubbing where she adapted and applied Karey Solomon's Cat & Mice pattern. Pattern will be shared if they get due permission.

 Margaret Davies
Despite all the curve balls life throws her way, Margaret has valiantly participated again. She shared her WIP here - https://margaretsdesignercards.blogspot.com/2025/03/happy-international-tatting-day-and.html
Her 5th round ruffled and she decided to cut it off. While this modification lays flat, she might tweak the stitch count at a future date. Hence no pattern shared yet.

Elisabeth Dobbler   worked the initial 2-round motif but was discouraged with the way her picots came out. Shelved for the present. The WIP pic is in the doc.

Join in whenever you can! This is open-ended. Perhaps I will also climb out of my limbo to add another round or two to my own version.

Words fail to express my gratitude and happiness to all participants!

happy Endrucks 2

Pin It now!

Continuing from my previous post (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/09/happy-endrucks-1.html), here is the second batch of models all derived, designed, and tatted by Krystyna Mura, from Endrucks' pattern #31!

Words fall short hence sit back and enjoy the beauty!

3D  BELL

3D  HEART

BIG  CHRISTMAS  BALL

SMALL  CHRISTMAS  BALL

STAR

RED  LILA  HEART

BEADED  HEART

GARNET  HEART

TINY  HEARTS

 LITTLE  LEAVES

BEADED  LEAF

GINGKO  LEAF

CHRISTMAS  WREATH

GREEN  PENDANT

While Krystyna hasn't yet shared individual patterns of these derivatives, one can identify the motif from the E31 Doily of Modest Hearts and figure out the stitch count and tatting sequence. Over time, she will share several patterns!

And these are not all!!!! Stay tuned for the final batch and continue to be amazed.

..... to be continued .....

what were the thieves up to?

Pin It now!
(scroll down to see what Alibaba was up against!)

Boy, am I glad about not posting the 31-41 combo ideas in the unmasked post! Guess what, I found more combo ideas from 21-30 that hadn't been published after the 1-20 cornucopia display. Those thieves really like to play together coming out in different formations from nooks and crannies for Alibaba to collect and show the mutants/variants !!!
collage with motifs 31-41
Please note that these are shapes that emerge from playing with motif placement - possibilities that can turn to reality when joined properly and with a bit of cleaning up for greater definition of shape. And if worked in one colour and 2 shuttles, the shapes can be tatted in one pass - trace the path for another layer of fun! The motif number is indicated in each image. Blossoms Motifs patterns can be found under Nature 2D here. For shapes/ideas with motifs 1-20, see this post. Imagine the possibilities if I had played with all 41 motifs together instead of in batches!

Blossoms Heart #2
While the outline is mostly fine, the tip and inner dip should have more of a point.

Blossoms Butterflies #7-#10

Blossoms Wreath/Garland #7

This is among the smaller ones. There are medium and larger sized wreaths/garlands in the 1-20 post.

Blossoms Bookmarks #1&#2

With or without a tassel or tail, these make cheerful bookmarks. Rotate them and we have edgings! How cute would a single floral spray look as a tail for some bookmark?!

Blossoms Edgings #1 to#3
The vertical is now horizontal and becomes a meandering edging!

The above scalloped edging was shared earlier, but not clear enough. This time I have cropped and filtered the image and notated the number beside the respective motif. What a difference a simple enhancement does!

Blossoms Square/Frame #3

Blossoms Birds - flying or perched!
These might take a bit more imagination and shifty-eye ogling for the shapes to emerge. And of course a bit of tweaking to enhance the shape when actually tatting them.
To me #25 looks like a a bird swooping down. Could work well as angel wings, too.
#23 could well be a bird in profile, just as the yin-yang combos below, especially #4!

Blossoms  Yin-Yang Bracelet/Pendant #3 to #6

This #4 really should've been under Birds, if I hadn't inked in the name.

A few beads in the right places, findings for attachment, and we have ourselves some beautiful bracelets or necklaces to suit a range of dress colours and seasons!

Blossoms Spinning Wheels
Motifs #21 to #30 arranged in a circle with curves of each motif parallel creates this spinning wheel effect.
There are several gaps between adjacent motifs that need to be filled in order to make this coaster/doily stable. One reason for the gaps is that many of the motifs have been rotated so that their fronts are facing the camera...narcissistic much!
This is the same as #2 above, but I spot a heart in encasing the center space.

Besides all the above, 4 bouquets and a corner also emerged. And this butterfly and Blossoms Heart.

Phew, that's it for now. It took tons of time to locate and notate each motif but I kept the wind at my back to sail ahead instead of delaying further. Alibaba has to stay on top of his game!

So what was Alibaba up against ???
The 40 ingenious thieves (okay we now know there were 41!) had drawn lines in the sand within which Alibaba had to strategise. Following are the broad thematic parameters for Alibaba and 40 Thieves in Lace aka #BlossomsProject (2018).

  • 40 motifs of overall similar size, using Lizbeth size 20
  • single-shuttle motifs with thematic similarity
  • no identical twins allowed!
  • about half the motifs curving to the right and half to the left
  • 5 colours for rosettes juggling each for combo, position, spread, size, number of petals, overlap, etc.
  • single shade green leaves ranging in number, placement, overlap, etc.

'Tis is the season, and though a bit late notifying, here is the up to date G-docs file of my Snowflake as well as Holiday patterns. Some are adaptations from other designs but most are my original.

All my Snowflake, Stars, etc. patterns. I included hexagonal motifs and medallions as well, though technically not snowflakes https://docs.google.com/document/d/1r4OmXX_c5LjFebMN2UbSNiYqXYETLmoridK0X1YIQco/view

And these contain some more Holiday motifs in the shape of wreaths, trees, crosses, bells, and so on -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Q-of3aKPFKlqMnXuEyhupbGHIW18OjH2yZYzlaTJHnQ/view

Of course there are motifs for other holidays and festivals as well, and they are all jumbled up. But at least it is all in there for now.

All in one place, easy for me to update, easy for you to access. I always put the date of my last update on top right of 1st page. Hope you find something you like and enjoy tatting it, tweaking it, and most of all Sharing it! Show me pics :-)))

Oh, and do please visit the respective blog post before starting any pattern. There are usually many more pics in there and possibly some tips and updates, and often splendid ideas in the comments!

peony interlaced

Pin It now!

Moving beyond linear designs, my next interlacing project is circular. It is still a work in progress since I want to go beyond a single round. I have an idea of what I want, but the exact number of rounds is still a mystery.
And this time there are 4 shades, one in each shuttle. Here’s how I started the first split rings without any knot. (scroll down to 'C')

A short while back Anita sent me a photo of her peonies, and I have tried to capture the flower as best I can in the shades I have.
Anchor cotton, size 20.
4 shuttles. Shuttles 1 & 2 have the darker reds; shuttles 3 & 4 have pinks.

Basic pattern :
SR1 : 12 / 11, do not close. Pass shuttle #3 front to back through SR1.
SR2 : 10 / 10. Pass Sh3 front to back again, close both split rings and repeat, joining back to first pair.

Peony Wreath pattern
For a floral effect, as seen in the model, the outermost edge has graduated picots and the pattern is as follows –
SR1 : 1 (–1)x11 / 11, do not close. Pass shuttle #3 front to back through SR1.
SR2 : 2 (–2)x4 / 2 vsp 6 vsp 2. Close both SRs after posting Sh3 again.
Repeat these 2 SRs, joining to the vsp of previous ring, and back to first pair. There are 10 pairs in total.

This can be a standalone project. Add beads and findings for earrings or pendant, or use as a tree ornament. Perhaps a miniature frame? It measures 2" across.

If you wish to continue, here’s the next round with petals….
Peony pattern (DIP)
Folded chain technique or Victorian Sets is used to create the dimples – a set of 1st half stitches (fhs) followed by a set of 2nd half stitches (shs) creates a beautiful dent.

Worked with one shuttle and ball, continuous thread. Attach to space between outer split rings.
Chain : 2 vsp 8, 4fhs 4shs, 3 – 5 vsp 2. lock join to next space.
[Chain2: 2 + 8, 4fhs 4shs, 3 – 5 vsp 2. lock join to next space.] Repeat all around.
Note: I count the lock join, followed by 2nd half stitch as 1 double stitch.

Since the next rounds are going to be in variegated pink, yellow was chosen to break the excess of pink (not a shade I am fond of). However, one can continue with pinks or any colour of your choice, and climb out using split chain.
At this stage it measures 2½” across.

So, what do you think? I’m pretty happy at how it’s shaping out, though there is ample scope for improvement in all areas. But I'll let it be for now.

Cornucopia of Blossoming ideas

Pin It now!
Combo ideas with blossoms motifs.

You might remember Alibaba had tied 20 thieves to the ‘board’, isolated from each other by invisible walls, while he went back to hunt down the rest. But it was festive season so in a humane gesture he temporarily set them free – snipped their shackles so that they could enjoy the ‘outdoors’, chat and catch up with each other. And as they mixed around, their huddles threw up a cornucopia of possible ideas shaping future projects …..

Please note that the original Blossoms motifs (or sprays) are not linked at this stage; they are merely arranged into possible shapes (a few of which have been shared earlier). For better definition of shape, one can add a few strategically placed leaves and similarly fill in any gaps.

Rushing out from their confinement, they took on the shape of bouquets!

Blossoms Bouquets #1 to #4

Some crossed paths and fluttered around like butterflies!

Blossoms Butterflies #1 to #6

What a couple of squares these dudes turned out!

Blossoms Squares #1 & #2

Then there was a trio of siblings renewing their bonds of love and blood. What better shape than a heart?!

Stitchcount for Blossoms Heart #1 is notated on the tatted model itself, including the total number of petals/rings in each. Each ring has only 2 numbers since the 2nd half of ring is a mirror image. A single numeral means all 4 segments of the ring have same count. Numeral in the box indicates number of rings/petals.

Opposites attracted too, ending in cozy embraces!

Blossoms Yin-Yang Pendant/Bracelets #1 & #2

Bosom pals huddled together, but larger huddles were also seen. Pretty wreaths, but were they playing or planning an escape?

 Blossoms Wreaths / Garlands #1 to #6

Some just went nuts, playing choo-choo train! Or was it to scour the perimeter for possible escape routes?
Blossoms Edging #1

These are starting ideas that need a bit more definition in terms of shape.
Put on your thinking caps and let’s get creative!!!

After this temporary sojourn, the 20 thieves were once again rounded up and corralled which is where they will stay till the remaining 20 are found. There might be another cornucopia in future….
