I wasn't going to, honestly, I had no intention of doing a design-along challenge this year! But then I made this simple motif to show the common picot and it looks cute, quick, and easy enough to work as the starting motif for a DAL, right? 

Disclaimer - The design is so basic that I did a quick image search for a similar pattern done before, but couldn't find any. I used my own count without referring to any previous pattern. Yet, if you know of any, please do let me know.

So what is a DAL, you ask? 

• Design-Along (DAL) is a little game I 'invented' where I give you a starting pattern. You tat the motif and then you have to continue by designing and tatting your own round or rounds to it. 
• In this 2-round motif no special techniques, no special effects are used, hence it can be a good stepping stone for relative beginners to design another round.  
• The motif can be tatted as separate rounds (like in my model) or you can climb out with a split ring.
• Feel free to add more picots to these two rounds if you need your 3rd round to have more attachments.
• You might even think of repeating this motif to create a larger piece, BUT you still have to design a round around them for it to be considered a DAL.
• Send me a pic of your tatted-designed piece and as before, I will include it in a Google doc for everybody to see. You can upload to Facebook (tag me - MuskaanM), or in your own blog (leave a comment here to let me know), or send it to me privately through email.
• Tatters are always looking for new patterns. Hence we would all appreciate if you shared your pattern as well in whatever way you can. All participants in my previous DALs have done so.

So here's the pattern. I hope you can find the time and enthusiasm to participate and display your budding or experienced talents! It is always such a huge inspiration to see the wonderful designs you come up with! In case of any doubts, feel free to ask.

Muskaan's DAL 2026 Motif pattern - 

Round 1 - (pink in diagram) Rosette, single shuttle. 

  NOTE: Common picot (△) - height is about 3 stitches across when folded.

  NOTE: For continuous tatting, use two shuttles and make the last ring a split ring followed by a mock picot, the same size as the common picots.

ringA: 2 - 7 △ 7 - 2. close ring, Do Not Reverse Work (DNRW).

ringB: 2 join to last picot of A, 7 △ 7 - 2. close ring, DNRW.

ringC: 2 join to last picot of B, 7 △ 7 - 2. close ring, DNRW.

ringD: 2 join to last picot of C, 7 △ 7 join to first picot of A), 2. close ring. Tie, cut, hide ends.  NOTE: This last join is a picot join to the right or a folded join.

Round 2 - (black in diagram) Scroll, ball and shuttle.

ringA: 6 join to any △, 6. close ring. Reverse Work (RW)

chainB: 6 - 6. RW

ringC: 6 join to same △, 6. close ring. RW,

chainD: 6 - 6. RW.

Repeat from A to D all around. Join back to base of A, Tie, cut, hide ends.

When I was updating the PDFs in our Endrucks' collection, it emerged that I hadn't yet worked on the prototype of the E37 Eye Spy Hearts #2 version (July 2022) which had been extracted from Eleonore Endrucks' E37 doily in 'Die Schiffchen-Spitzen', 1920 from rounds 4 to 8. I had only notated the pattern on the prototype pic, intending to improve on the design at a later date. This same heart, however, was used by Margaret Davies to enlarge it and then to convert it into an angel which incidentally hid a bell! Since we used this for our November 2022 game, her patterns were shared. 

When asked, my Partner in Crime, Ninetta, urged me to create a PDF. Hmm, that called for my shuttles to get to work on the improvement after over 3 years! And I can now show you all the version 2 hearts in chronological order along with future designs based on various arrangements.

However I was not satisfied with the proportions - the hearts were too broad.

... Margaret Davies shared her 'uplifted' version within days! A very clever adaptation except that the  inner chain pairs kind of flattened out. 

In the left model I tatted the bottom chains as per my own heart pattern, facing inwards. The pink model follows Margaret's pattern with the outward facing chain and thrown ring.

Flash forward to Sep 2025! My new trials and tweaks running through four variations where I wanted to keep as close to the original doily from which these were extracted ...

 

Of these, the 2nd and 4th (2A & 2B) patterns are shared in the pdf. With the removal of one pair of rings, the last model (2B) is very clearly a continuation of E37 Eye Spy Hearts #1. Nevertheless, I liked the overall shape and decided to include it in the PDF.

Ninetta Caruso, while reviewing the PDF, tatted the #2B version and shared how she joined the ring to the chain (as seen in the WIP pic on left). I included it as a tip in the presentation - it is always great to have options!

With EIGHT models on hand, how could I not play with arrangements?! You can see a few of these possibilities below. Note, no two models are identical - they differ either in count, picots, or thread size.

 

Heart motifs certainly lend themselves to a wide range of arrangements and possible designs!

Hearts are great motifs to learn and apply new techniques, practice and hone skills, embellish, and create new designs! Look at where this tiny little heart has travelled so far .... without forgetting it's origins!

It all started with Endrucks' pattern #3 (1920), an edging which was reworked and presented by Anita Barry (2020), which inspired AlenAlea Rako to turn it into squares (2021), from which I espied a heart (2022) and Sue Bradham saw a butterfly (2022).

A few months later, when we chose this heart pattern for one of our games (Pretty Me Endrucks Aug2022), more adaptations came about! These include a key chain by Marina MadJar tatting, an enlarged heart motif and one-pass bookmark by Margaret Davies, a coaster by Ninetta Caruso, and a butterfly by Stephaine Mc (Tattimic). This time I am presenting the collection starting with tatters who sent in the most motifs to the least. While this wasn't a competition, we have a clear hare that overtook many tortoises (just kidding, ladies!) - who else but the Master Multiplier, Anna Tedesco! 

1. Anna Tedesco - 16 + 4   Now here's a lady who loves to tat multiples of almost any and every pattern! 

Using Ninetta's Iris Pendant adaptation, she sewed 3 complete motifs on an ornament, with one rosette at the top.

Using larger crystal beads to connect motifs.

And something similar was followed for two more ornaments below -

6 complete motifs using transparent white beads surround one ball, while 4 motifs and 2 rosettes with amber beads surround the other ornament. Anna is all set to decorate her tree!

UPDATE Nov 17, 2023; And we received a quartet of stars and snowflakes from Anna, taking her total to 20! 

2. Paola Emilia Rotuletti - 8

Paola is also a dedicated player who can belt out multiples. She had won our Dec2022 game!

One single motif.

A mat with 4 motifs.

And 5-point adaptation for Stars! This motif is quite versatile as you will see ahead ....

3. Jiamrat Supapol - 5 + 1   Jiamrat's shuttle moves fast, too!

She starts off with two regular motifs, but inverting the colours ....

... then a button adaptation where she replaced the innermost rounds with the button.

This made a nice brooch.

Her 4th motif has thrown rings on the last round...

...and she used this on her stole pin

Now here's an example reflecting her current phase of working with rings/cabones. Such a beautiful 9-point adaptation with thrown dimpled rings between each arm for a fuller look.

UPDATE Nov 17, 2023: And Jiamrat continued to let her shuttles fly for a 6th model for a button flower! 

4. Lyn Clements - 5   also belted out five motifs (they might be 4, but I'm not asking, LOL).

One 2-coloured single motif, 

and a mat with inverted colours.

5. Meenakshi (Muskaan) Jain - 4

Now if I counted all my motifs since Nov 2020, I'd be having a bit of a snooze with 21 motifs! However, that'd be total cheating.

I allowed myself only a wee bit of cheating. The above 3 motifs were the only ones I had left from before that hadn't been joined/extended. So I used them to make jewellery, sewing on beads, crystals, pearls, findings. (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/10/rabbits-multiply.html)

6. Ninetta Caruso - 4  my ever-ready partner in crime, she asked if I wanted a version in metallic threads and beads while we were preparing the game. I'd be daft to say no!

Notice how her bead placement pushes the rosette rounds apart creating a web-like effect, and also makes the motif large than normal. 

And then, using the same bead placement, but without truncating two arms, she tatted this lovely set of earrings; a tertiary adaptation. I like the long beaded picot which can replace a teardrop.

Ninetta writes - "Thread is metallic Sanbest 3 strands, colour numbers are 130 and 124. Beads are rocailles 15/0."

Miniature is her trademark! Her 4th motif is size 80 ready for the pumpkin patch!

 This month's game in our FB group is Multiply Me Oct2023 (#MultiplyMeEndrucks). We chose one motif - the Square Diamond motif derived from Endrucks' pattern #37 and asked participants to tat More than One motif. That's it! So far we have 15 participants and 41.5 motifs in various avatars!

Since 2020, I have tatted numerous motifs for the main pattern presentation and also because I just so like the design! I had lost count but now took the time to count from my stored pics and they total 21, worked in various threads, shades, and applications.

However, for this game I will only be counting 3 earrings since I sewed in embellishments late last month, and one that I found a few days with only the starting few rounds done! Obviously I had to finish it in order to participate ethically, LOL.

E37 earrings worked from left to right in Lixbeth 20, Anchor pearl cotton 8, and Anchor MC 40. These were the only free motifs I could find in my stash and sewed in beads, teardrops, hooks, etc.

I tried a different style of embellishment for each.

Obviously the inclusion of seed beads would've made the earrings look more finished and put together, but I had no energy to tat. Even this sewing was done at the very last moment despite the idea, since I couldn't even garner the energy to gather my beading supplies. 

This is the E37 Snowflake adaptation. Multiplication of motifs not merely in numbers but in the number of repeats! I can't remember what my original design plan was (except for the 6 repeats) or even when I'd started it. However it turned out kind of okay - more like a flower. Yes, a flower flake!

Idea: If the chains on either side ot the thrown ring at the tip, were yo face inwards, it would give a pointier, more snowflakish loo, I think.

It's the first time I have used wide picots in any pattern! Each arm also has a modified stitch count. I can share if there is enough interest. It ruffled something fierce, but blocking flattened it out.

And last but in no way the least is Ninetta's Iris Pendant - a beaded version of the E37 motif adapted for a pendant. When we were planning this game, she offered to tat one in metallic thread and she came up with this beauty and also shared her pattern!
