 This month's game in our FB group is Multiply Me Oct2023 (#MultiplyMeEndrucks). We chose one motif - the Square Diamond motif derived from Endrucks' pattern #37 and asked participants to tat More than One motif. That's it! So far we have 15 participants and 41.5 motifs in various avatars!

Since 2020, I have tatted numerous motifs for the main pattern presentation and also because I just so like the design! I had lost count but now took the time to count from my stored pics and they total 21, worked in various threads, shades, and applications.

However, for this game I will only be counting 3 earrings since I sewed in embellishments late last month, and one that I found a few days with only the starting few rounds done! Obviously I had to finish it in order to participate ethically, LOL.

E37 earrings worked from left to right in Lixbeth 20, Anchor pearl cotton 8, and Anchor MC 40. These were the only free motifs I could find in my stash and sewed in beads, teardrops, hooks, etc.

I tried a different style of embellishment for each.

Obviously the inclusion of seed beads would've made the earrings look more finished and put together, but I had no energy to tat. Even this sewing was done at the very last moment despite the idea, since I couldn't even garner the energy to gather my beading supplies. 

This is the E37 Snowflake adaptation. Multiplication of motifs not merely in numbers but in the number of repeats! I can't remember what my original design plan was (except for the 6 repeats) or even when I'd started it. However it turned out kind of okay - more like a flower. Yes, a flower flake!

Idea: If the chains on either side ot the thrown ring at the tip, were yo face inwards, it would give a pointier, more snowflakish loo, I think.

It's the first time I have used wide picots in any pattern! Each arm also has a modified stitch count. I can share if there is enough interest. It ruffled something fierce, but blocking flattened it out.

And last but in no way the least is Ninetta's Iris Pendant - a beaded version of the E37 motif adapted for a pendant. When we were planning this game, she offered to tat one in metallic thread and she came up with this beauty and also shared her pattern!

Today's haul of fully blossomed mogras!

After more than 10 days I decided I'd had enough of computerwork and deliberately took the night off to do some quick tatting. 

In 2020, I had joined these motifs on the go (I do like this staggered arrangement!) and suggested it could be used as a bracelet or bookmark. At the time I simply inserted some satin ribbons to showcase the beauty (https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2020/11/arranging-motifs.html - check out the post for many more arrangements). 

Now I brought out the box of perle cottons, looked for the right shades to match the motifs, wound only one shuttle for each pair of threads, and set about tatting the three tails. All except the lead pic, were taken last night, fresh off the shuttle.

The chains are simple zig-zag of 1ds/1rs repeats, ending each thread in a ring of 8ds. In no mood to sew in ends, I tied a square knot and snipped to resemble bows.

TIP: This is also called a S Chain though it is a subset of the Zig Zag Chain or Zig Zag Tatting. These are straight chains but bendable. Some other terms used for this particular chain is Wavy or Lark's head chain.

I like multiple tails (have made them before plenty of times) since each can be used to bookmark a separate page in the same book. So instead of one bookmark I get four, LOL.

Hearts want to play, organise themselves into groups and shapes. Well it's not new in our tatting world (see links at the end of post), yet each arrangement takes on the characteristics of its component hearts. Anchor Pearl Cotton size 8 is similar to Lizbeth size 20;

and Anchor crochet cotton size 20 is similar to Lizbeth size 10.

I Love this arrangement for an elegant bracelet or bookmark.

The hearts can be tatted continuously in pairs of 2 (like the 2 in the center) with split ring tips.

Another arabesque arrangement for a quilt block or a frame.

4 friends together form a square.

The 4 hearts at the bottom can be arranged alternately for an insertion or bookmark.

These, as well as the earrings are worked in Anchor Perle Cotton size 8. Each earring heart measures about 2.5cms x 2.5cms, and the skewed arrangement gives an earring measuring about 4cms wide and 7.5 cms long (without the teardrop).

The body of this bookmark (Margaret Davies' adaptation), also worked in Anchor Pearl size 8 measures 3.5cms x 12.5 cms.

After adding the braid and tassel, it almost touches 30cms.

A couple of my Indian tatters directed me to where I could purchase the bookmark sleeves online! And I did! Thanks, ladies.While for personal use, I still prefer bare lace (hence the tassel is attached to the bookmark, not the sleeve), the sleeves will keep them protected and flat when not in use or when gifting.

I pulled the tassel through the hole at the tip, thus anchoring it.

The maroon prototype was worked in Anchor size 20 and is 3.5cms wide and 3 cms high.

The other 2 are the enlarged hearts .....

On the left is Margaret Davies' enlarged version, with 16/0 beads. In Anchor Pearl size 8, it works out to 3.5cms x 3.5cms.

The right one is my slight variation with longer top chains and a beaded loop to insert a chain or findings. It now measures >4cms x 3.5cms.

Now for the exciting part ----- Look closely at the center .....

Eye Spy a Pentagon in this coaster ....

[In Anchor size 20 the diameter is 7cms]

.... and Eye Spy a Square in this pendant!

Both pentagon and square can be worked in one pass. Can you figure out the pathway?

It was Carol Liu's colour placement which first brought out the pentagon clearly.

 Forgotten, not in the 'out of sight out of mind' way. Quite the contrary! It is the 'right in front of my eyes but no longer visible' kind of way.

The photographs tell me it was 19th June. After that things got so busy that I had to keep this project aside. However, I kept it in the middle shelf of my bedside unit, in plain sight! And yet it wouldn't register and I forgot to post and share. Such a disconnect!

3 sides done, and the ball of size 20 Red Heart gives an idea of the dimensions.

 

4th motif attached.

 If I were to tat this again (no way!) I'd make the picot at the tip much longer. Or, do a swirl join. 

I used a square bottle to try and block it - not quite successful. Nothing like a rolling pin to flatten out the bumps, LOL.

5th motif joined! There is space between the motifs as is visible in the above pic. One can add a ring as I had done for the mat. 

Instead what I have in mind is to make a box from transparency sheet to fit inside this. It will act as a proper container, give the lace shape and sturdiness, too. Yet, after more than a month on the shelf, it hasn't lost it's shape!

This project will remain stalled for a while, with lots of stuff taking precedence.

So, dear readers and bloggers, I hope you haven't forgotten me in the 'out of sight' way? 

I have kept abreast of blogs, quickly browsing or reading without leaving a comment. Yet the time was well spent and satisfying. 

Our EP doc (Endrucks 1920 Project document) is now all laid out and every section is covered. Some day I will get around to polishing the text, too. Last evening I sent in the 2nd of 3 articles on Endrucks to the IOLI Bulletin, phew! Many ticks against several task boxes,  with a huge sense of accomplishment.

What's happening here?! I'm bonkers for sure. I left you with 3 motifs extracted from Endrucks' pattern #37, joined to form a multi-use ornament here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/06/3d-multi-use-ornament.html. 

The beads were all snipped off and when I joined the 4th motif, this is what happened --- a gift bag!

4 motifs joined tip to tip. Then beaded strings brought the 2 free tips of opposite motifs together.

And we get a tiny gift bag. Good enough for little girls and their dolls, or for bigger girls and their balls (er, balls of thread)!

The stork is carrying a gift for sure !

 

Since the beads are again going to be snipped off in order to continue on my journey, I did not address the gaping holes between motifs. 

While the ball will stay put, a shuttle or any smaller object will slip through unless there is a fabric lining as is clearly visible in the video.

Instead of a fabric lining, one can use some tatted rings/elements to close that space (I used to and fro chains in this bag - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2021/10/bagatelle-to-bagaball.html). 

The Pony shuttle with Anchor size 20 ball gives you an idea of the size.

And this is another idea that crept in with the monsoons - a boat! Doesn't it remind you of our childhood paper boats? If we add more motifs to lengthen the sides, we get a longer boat or kayak, or whatever your sailor's heart desires!

I would've liked to take pics/videos against a better background, but the weather does not permit too much movement, LOL.

A tree decoration in June?! The seed took root early and this idea  branched out from another.

Remember this single motif bonanza? I picked up the discarded 'mat' - the one with a yellow and dark blue motif attached, in order to make a cube.  

As I joined the 3rd motif, I couldn't repress my playful mood and found it could be a cute ornament with some additional beads. In finer thread, it could also be worn as earrings or a brooch/pendant, or how about a bracelet charm?!

Worked in Anchor size 20.

Here it kind of looks like a partially open flower! Add a calyx and stem and we're good to go.

 

Continuing with my curiosity, I attached beads, crystals, teardrops, etc. Looks pretty festive, right? 

How about using it over a baby's crib (not within reach, of course!)?

 

What I would do differently is to have the 3 bottom teardrops suspended at different heights instead of the same.

When planned ahead, beads can be added during the tatting process. I would've placed beads a bit differently as well.

It would look good as a window decoration, too. Or as part of a toran (door hanging/decoration) for door.

Time now to snip off all the beads. I have a feeling that joining a 4th motif could create a biscornu! Will try to see if the idea works.

Square diamond motifs and mat with pattern 

from endrucks (1920) doily #37

My love affair with this motif started a long time back and the tatting started in November 2020. It is the central motif of a doily - pattern #37 from Endrucks' 1920 book. What caught my interest as I tatted, was the versatility in terms of sequence/paths resulting in diverse colour and directional effects.

For the most part I kept the inner Rosette unchanged, focusing on the arms.

1. Original: This is the original unaltered pathway from Endrucks. The 2 small middle rings (lateral) face the same direction - to the right. The asymmetry is not too visible since the rings are tiny. However it intrigued me, and as a study in design, I decided to go ahead with my variations....

2. Modified: My modified pathway where the 2 small lateral rings face each other for symmetry. This is used to present the stepwise pattern, loading 2 shuttles with contrasting colours.

In Anchor size 20 (~ Lizbeth 10), it measures 5cms sides and 6.5cms diagonally.

3. Trefoil Version: This entire motif can be worked with one shuttle and ball, except for the single thrown ring at the tips, provided we decide before working the penultimate round. 

4. Flipped Ring version: While following Endrucks' original pathway, I merely swapped the direction of the thrown ring at the tips, working it on the way up rather than on the way down. Look closely to see that I alternated the flip.

5. Colour medley 1: Using Lock Join Plus aka Repositioning methods, I alternated the colours/shuttles within the rosette. (https://drive.google.com/file/d/17zsM3JaLO7r0ajg8VOnv5IcJ-kLNqEiU/view). You can choose any method you like, including changing colours between segments rather than rounds.

6. colour medley 2: I started with ball and shuttle for the rosette and added the green thread later, using False CTM, and snipping off the ball thread. (false ctm tutorials Part1 ; Part 2).

In Lizbeth 20 (with one less rosette round), it works to 3.5cms sides and 5 cms diagonally.

7. Reduced Round: If you remember my travails with cupping, this motif was my solution by removing the final rosette round and increasing the size of the 4 joining picots.

In Anchor Pearl cotton size 8 (~ Lizbeth 20), this works out to 4cms sides & 5,5cms diagonally.

8. New Motif for Doily: While the doily worked fine with the above modifications (in #7), I needed to make sure it will hold up in crochet cotton thread. Hence started this new motif (but forgot to reduce the round!). I'm still a bit apprehensive about continuing .... let's see.

In Anchor size 40, this works out to 3.75cms sides and 4,5cms diagonally.

bracelet, bookmark, jewellery, charm, ....: Above is the bracelet idea. I really like this offset arrangement! Bookmark with a single motif as charm at the end of a tail is another practical idea. 

Single motifs with beads and findings can become jewellery pieces,...in fact an entire parure can be tatted.

9. Modified for Mat: The single lateral ring at the tips are larger here (7+4-4), and used for the Mat (below). 

Hubby had chosen this yellow and blue combination for the mat/coaster I wanted to make him. But the solid colours didn't work out (the 2 joined motifs can be seen in the topmost group pic). However, after seeing the cute 3D Flower Cube by Lillian Yeung, I hope to convert it into one, too!

mat/coaster/table runner/table cloth ..:  I was tired of working with yellow, hence chose this peach colour and the green went nicely with it. One can increase the tatted fabric to deserved size by joining as many motifs as required.

In Anchor size 20 it measures 10cmsx10cms.

Wondering whether we needed to cover up the blank space a bit, the sequins were hubby's idea and he got the blue he'd had in mind! One can use buttons in place of sequins.

For the purpose of sharing the pattern, I decided to see how large a ring would be required and worked these 4 rings in later. However, they can be worked as thrown rings. I was prepared to snip off the rings, but hubby liked it just fine and is using it!

alternate tessellation or cross: If a size 40 motif is joined like a diamond to the 4-motif open arrangement (worked in perle size 8 or Lizbeth size 20), we get another variation for a mat or fabric with alternating squares and diamonds!

In the above, if we join a couple of motifs to the orange one for a longer arm, we get a cross!

So there it is - a bonanza of choices and effects from one single motif!!!
