This year our Endrucks FB group has probably felt a bit orphaned with both Ninetta and I being engaged elsewhere. We miss the interaction and games, but just cannot carve out enough time at present. So it was such a wonderful surprise to see a new heart derived from Endrucks' pattern E13 by Lella Loops! She is an excellent needle tatter and has been a participant in almost all our games and more. She sent us the diagram and I prepared the rest of the presentation for shuttle tatting.

It is a very clever construction ... Lella 'erased' parts of the lace and brought together two motifs to create this heart, with minimal changes to the stitch count, etc.! 

I quickly tatted up my own model with shuttle and though I am not overly happy with my work, it will have to do for now. Worked in Anchor size 20 (equivalent to Lizbeth 10), it is 2" across and a bit more than 1-1/4" high. 

It is a very easy pattern with the count being 6 or a multiple of 6 for each element and all rings are worked from the front in case of directional tatting. 

The drop or inward picot is made using the node or set stitch - 2fhs, p, 2shs.

Not only does it tat up quickly and can be used to empty shuttles (it needs very little thread on 2nd shuttle) but I also love the way the two long side chains on the lower side have that little curve before tapering down. Now if only I had noticed the uneven closure of the large ring it wouldn't have tilted to the right, LOL!

Please use the hashtag (#Endrucks1920Project) and the name of the designer & pattern when you post online. Not only is it a courteous gesture to give credit, but also makes it easier for others to find the pattern. , ......

Barely has snowflake season ended than heart season has commenced! I see hearts ruling tatters' needles and shuttles already. This spurred me to finish compiling all my heart and heart-related patterns in a single Google Docs file with pictures and links.

So here's the link to the document if you wish to scroll through. Hopefully some image will inspire your shuttle or needle. 

Tat ....

• motifs to glue on cards, 
• add findings to make jewellery - earrings,  pendant, bracelets,...

Actually, there are a few other snowflakes where tweaks have been made. But I’d like to tat those up before sharing. It may take a while, but there’s always next season :-D

Getting right down to it ….

Krystyna Mura’s Earrings adaptation

Now this is a very clever use of thread which she has diagrammed as well. In her own words –

  

I wanted to make the whole rose bud in the shade of red. It is possible to get such a result with Lisbeth 20 "cranberry bush" (colour 181)

This particular thread colour is excellent for this goal

I wound the thread on two shuttles as it's shown below.
The ring - shuttle 1;
All chains [except lock chains, of course]: the core thread - shuttle 2.

Krystyna has captured the direction, sequence and count, etc. all in a single, easy-to-follow colour-coded diagram!

Since I don’t have any such variegation, my model is made in 2 parts. The yellow rose is made with 2 shuttles, continuous thread and stem/leaves in green ball and shuttle, continuous.

However, I captured the green thread at the base before starting the 1^st lock chain.

For the outer chains in rose, I went clockwise instead of counterclockwise.

I didn’t snip off the yellow tails. These are easy to encapsulate within the green Josephine chain stem to avoid sewing in ends. After carrying them for a distance, I snipped each off at different points.

Krystyna used the magic thread trick to hide tail ends. I struck upon a new (I think) idea to end on a chain. Use the dead end, floating or single shuttle splitchain (SSSCh) method! Yes, it can be used to end, not just start a curlicue!

Here’s how –

Hiding Ends in Floating chain

After bottom leaf, double the shuttle thread and continue the Josephine chain by finger tatting over the other green ball thread. We are encapsulating the other tail.

On reaching the end, pass 2^nd tail through the SSSCh loop, and snip off after about 1cms. Now pull the shuttle thread to close the loop, tugging the 2^nd tail inside the stitches as well. Snip. No sewing in ends for those, like I, who cannot do the MTT.

Anita Barry’s Heart adaptation

To see a heart in a rose snowflake is something Anita does well!

The rose count is tweaked slightly, however the original count will also work, provided the heart chain is reduced in length proportionately.

Chains have thrown rings (TR). Switch shuttle before and after each TR.

A: ring: 5 +(base of rose) 5. Switch shuttle

B: ch : 16, (TR:5), 3 , (TR:8), 3, (TR 14), 3, (TR 8), 3, (TR 5), 3, lj. SS

C: SR : 6/6.

D: SR : 6/6. SS. LJ.

E: Repeat chain going down, with thrown rings... RW

F: SR 5/5.

G: ring: 6-6.

This last can be a single shuttle split ring (SSSR) to hide ends.

I had tremendous fun tatting these pretty quick projects. In fact I used scrap yellow threads for both. Hope you enjoy them as well.

Sharing 5-in-1 Buddy Hearts patterns !!!

The pattern presentation would’ve been completed in November last year, if it weren’t for, well, life. Just so happy to be able to do it at least before Valentine’s Day!

There are 2 pdfs. 

The short version only has diagrams and is a single page printout.

The long version has diagrammed & written patterns, along with tips for impeccable tatting from Master Tatter Anita Barry. It also has a write-up about out design process and relevant details, which anyone can use to create their own heart patterns! Anita wrote her patterns while I wrote mine. So even if you decide to print only the diagram-version, I still urge you to at least read the long version for the insights. And, of course, for the tremendous time & effort we put in ;-P

Since I had already posted my thoughts here, I invited Anita to write about her journey. Which is when I realised our diametrically opposite approaches to designing our respective hearts – reminds me of centrifugal v/s centripetal forces!

See, where Anita goes from the out in, having drawn the heart first, I chose the decorative piece first and then drew an incomplete heart outline which was ‘completed’ with leftover motifs forming one side.

Further, her hearts can be worked continuously, whereas my hearts are a combo of separate pieces – the floral spray and the heart proper, and worked in 2 thread sizes for better effect.

Read about both approaches in the pdf. And oh, there is a bonus heart pattern in the bundle – 5 complete patterns for our tatting buddies, and one slight variation.

Nicola’s Hearts

3 heart patterns by Nicola Bowersox

A few weeks back, Nicola shared some lovely hearts on Craftree (and her facebook group). I had intended to tat her Kiss Curl heart again. This seemed like the perfect time to accomplish some heartfelt tatting. And try my tatting needles, too :-)

Blue Heart

I had recently bought beads and was excited to try some out, despite being larger than what the pattern called for (the purple one below). See the ruffling for yourself, despite adding a stitch on each chain. Abandoned. 
And back to a more sedate colour, in keeping with the name Blue Heart. 

As usual, I measured and made the picots on which to load beads later, rather than dangle beads and paperclips.

Time to try my new tatting needles (my first foray into needle tatting here).....

Kiss Curl Heart

Kiss Curl Heart is the perfect start to needle tatting since it is 95% chains. Started with Lizbeth size 40 and I deliberately tatted tighter to resemble shuttle tatting. I did get nice stitches, but see how it left my needle (pic below) !!! Good thing I have another set of needles (where did I keep them now ?!)

Also, there is a mistake – for some weird reason I got disoriented when it came to making the ring - look closely and you'll see the twist. Luckily my questions were answered in class ("think of it as a SCMR" - thank you ☺) and when I tried again with size 20, it went smoothly. Except this time my stitches were a bit too loose in order to keep needle intact ;-P

So much for my NT foray – I will stick to my shuttles for the present. I do hope to use to the needles for some elements (Celtic, interlocking, ..) and definitely as a beading needle (this is what I used for the Radiant Sun paperclip ;-P )

Oh, and the 3^rd time (pink with gold one above), I did it with my trusted shuttle – I wanted to do justice to her pattern. My notes on the earlier yellow one helped – start with RODS (backside) chain to get the curl on the left. Wanted to take a combo pic of all 4, but seems I’ve already gifted it away.

New Heart

New Heart is another pretty pattern. I used 2 strands of pink embroidery thread, and 1 strand of gold. 

NOTES for shuttle tatting : 2 shuttles, directional or fs/bs tatting :

Rings 1 to 9, tatted clockwise from front with shuttle 1, without RW.

Chains 10 to 14, tatted clockwise from front with shuttle 2, without RW.

Ring 15 is tatted frontside, with shuttle 1. (thus, SS before and after Ring 15).

Chains 16 to 24, tatted clockwise from front with shuttle 2, without RW.

Chains 25 to 26, tatted backside with shuttle 2.

Individual tatting tensions differ. I increased a couple of stitches for these 2 chains to get a nice arch.

All chains are lock joined to previous elements.

This is how the pink really looks, though it was still hard to get the subtle gold sparkle across. 

Nicola’s patterns are not only pretty, but very well presented and clear. Though written for needle tatting, they are easy to shuttle-tat. These little hearts are quick to tat up, whatever the tatting tool ! 
I thoroughly enjoyed myself !

Tatting Pattern : In Sync Heart

The best laid plans !!!

Today’s post had been decided almost about 2 weeks back. It was going to be tatting piece (not a heart, lol) based on & inspired by a romantic classic, which I had started reading. I had hoped to finish reading & post both together, commemorating the sentiments of this day. Well, I still have about a 100 pages to go … so the post will have to wait for a few more days :-(

Instead, I finally tatted another heart last evening, this time from my original sketches which were drawn when Land of Laces announced the Heart Challenge here ! Even though it did not Strictly conform to the sketch, the main element viz. a braid of Interlocking Rings is there. The rest I tatted as I went, but with some meaning in each segment.

The name “In Sync” should be clue enough … how the 2 colours representing 2 individuals (or spirits/ideas) are in sync with each other in different ways, maintaining their individuality in their togetherness, sometimes merging, sometimes dancing, sometimes melting, all enwrapped in each other. You can form your own interpretations :-)

The Interlocking Rings can be replaced with Split Rings, where the colours of each half alternate, creating a spiraling rope-like effect as in the tail of my Trailing Hearts Bookmark here .

In Sync Heart

A stylized freeform heart with symbolism 

4 shuttle, 2-colour pattern comprising of Interlocking Split Rings & Lock Chains

Threads : Anchor Mercer Cotton. Size 40

White

Lavender : 4054-098

Measurement : Works up to around 2 inches in size 40 thread.

Abbreviations (in order of appearance) :

CTM : continuous thread method

SR : Split Ring

IR : Interlocking Ring

vsp : very small picot

Cl : Close ring

LCh : Lock Chain

ds : double stitch.

Ch : chain

lp : long picot

sep : separated by

LJ : Lock Join

RW :  Reverse Work

Pattern 

I have written the pattern as per the segments for greater clarity, hopefully. Refer to image this with notations.

 Segment 1 – Interlocking Split Rings

Wind 2 pairs of shuttles, each pair with one colour, CTM.

With purple shuttles --  SR1 : 10 / vsp 10 . Cl.

With white shuttles --   SR2 : 10 / vsp 10 . Before closing, pass both purple shuttles UPWARDS through the white ring. Close ring.

Repeat these two SRs, alternating the colours, and WITHOUT the picot, such that a segment of 10 IRs is formed.

Segment 2 – Single Colour Lock Chains ‘Rope’

Continuing with the white shuttle pair, make a LCh 1½” long.

With purple shuttles, make another LCh 1½” long.

Twist the 2 together & to keep the twist in place lock/knot them with a ds. While twisting, keep the arc of the heart in mind – the twist should be just right.

Segment 3 – Chains with long picots

With white pair -- Ch : vsp, 2, 8 lp sep by 1 ds, 2, join to vsp. This gives a ring-like effect.

With purple pair –- Ch: vsp, 2, 6 lp sep by 2 ds, 2, LJ to 3^rd picot of white chain, RW, 25 ds.

With white pair – Ch : 25

Segment 4 – 2-Colour Lock Chains

For this segment, pair one white shuttle with purple each.

With one pair of shuttles make Inner Lock Chain measuring 1½”. LJ to vsp of 1^st white SR on the IR segment.

With the other pair of shuttles, make Outer Lock Chain measuring 2”. LJ to vsp of 1^st purple SR on the IR segment.

Segment 5 – Single colour Chains

Optional Segment.

With white pair of shuttles together : Ch : 3, 7 lp sep by 1 ds, 3, LJ to any ds of 1^st white SR in IR segment.

With purple pair of shuttles together : Ch : approx 30 ds. LJ to last picot of white chain.

Tie & cut all threads. Hide ends.

 Few Notes 

• 4 shuttles can be a bit tricky to work with while making the IRs, but they were a JOY to create the rest of the elements – one had so much Choice ! Just pick up any shuttle to work with. And I didn’t even do any encapsulation here, sticking to 2-shuttle tatting for the rest of the pattern !
• I chose a finer thread (size 40) to give it a more elegant, dainty look.
• If I make this again, I will try to have larger SRs in Segment 1. Maybe 15/15. This will give a more rounded look – closer to heart shapes.

• I have given the LCh lengths. But with different tensions, etc. this length may vary for individuals. Try to estimate the desired length by positioning the in-work chain Before joining .
• I think the Segment 4 LChs should be a tad longer. Seemed fine last night, but appear a bit short when scanning.
• The last Segment #5 is Optional because the heart shape has already been formed. I just wanted to show some symbolism here.
• A little blocking is required … I just spritz some water & ironed.
• I had quite a struggle with the starting of the IRs. But once the initial rings are made, it is easy going. If anybody wishes for a step-by-step pictorial on how to start Interlocking Rings, a là Interlaced Rings here, please leave a comment letting me know.

Yeah, yeah, I can see you all groaning … “not another heart?!!!”

Okay, I yield to popular sentiment. So, not another heart, 

…. But THREE Hearts !!! :-D

I took up Dorothea’s Land of Laces Heart Challenge here (click on link for details) & that is how the Trailing Hearts Pattern arose. But even that pattern was Not on my initial sketches. Anyways, the challenge is just an excuse. It served as a good diving board & I am getting more comfortable creating these tiny motifs/medallions/shapes.

Neo Vintage Heart

Size 20 crochet cotton in Ecru
Measurements :1-1/2 " wide x 1 " vertically ... round 1.
2-3/4" x 1-1/2" vertically .... round 2.
 Abbreviations :CTM - Continuous Thread method

SCMR – self closing mock ring
Fp – false picot
R – ring
p – picot

Round 2. Working clockwise ….

Half Ring/Scallop : 5 Close partially such that a scallop is formed. LJ to picot on chain.

Repeat this all around the chains, joining with LJ at each p, such that 12 half rings/scallops are made. Tie and cut. Hide cut end.

Heart is complete .

I deliberately used half rings with the tiny bit of bare thread at their base in Round 2 . The knotted side makes a scalloped edge, while the bare thread gives a lacy, vintage effect. Hence the name ... a timeless heart that incorporates traditional/classic elements with more modern tatting such as self-closing mock rings. And hence, too, the choice of thread & colour …. lending it a kind of old-world look.

Magic Heart

Derived from the "Magic Square", as outlined in this post here (Fig. 5A) . 

This is such a small & simple heart that it can be made with leftover yarn (as I did for this prototype….didn’t get around to making a better version yet). It can easily be a beginner’s pattern.

Thread : Anchor Mercer Cotton size 20 . Navy Blue w/ White (variegated) : 4054-1210

Abbreviations : As listed above. and JK : Josephine Knot.

R1 : 6 lp 6 . Cl. RW

Ch : 12 p 2 p 2 p 6 . RW

R2 : 6 + (R1) 6 . Cl. RW

Ch : 6 p 2 p 2 p 12 RW

R3 : 6 + (R1) 6 . Cl. RW

Ch : 5 RW

R4 : 6 + (R1) 6 . Cl. RW . Switch Shuttle

JK5 : 7 hs

Ch : 5. Join to base of  R1 or the space between R1 & first Ch.

Tie & cut ends & hide.

Please note :

i)                    Before closing R1, a very small picot can be incorporated in order to anchor the last chain join.

ii)                   All chains can be worked with directional tatting.

iii)                 Since the 2^nd shuttle is required only for the tiny JK, one can do without it …. Simply finger tat this last piece, or make an SLT & single shuttle JK.

 Hold My Hand Heart

Again, this is just the first trial, using leftover thread in size 10. I had imagined a little more elaborate pattern, with the interlocking rings, but am not too unhappy with the way this turned out. In fact the 2 IRs seem to be hands held together ;-)

The advantage with this pattern is that it can be Easily needle-tatted too !

Thread : South Maid Mercerised Cotton (Coats n Clark , USA) Size 10 . Color : 22 GARLAND

Pattern :

2 shuttles wound CTM

Start with the trefoil.

R1 : 12  Cl

R2 : 16  Cl

R3 : 12  Cl . RW

Ch : 20 Downward picot 20

At this stage, I realized that I hadn’t completely thought this through. So, I simply finger-tatted the last interlocking ring.

Interlocking Ring : 12

Tie & cut. Hide ends. To avoid this step, cut the chain thread & hide end in last ring, & make the last ring a single shuttle split ring (SSSR) !
