DAL2026 roundup 2

Pin It now!

So let's just continue to enjoy what emerged from Muskaan's DAL 2026 Challenge where you have to design additional round(s) on the given base/foundation motif. Details: https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2026/08/time-to-play-again.html

Continuing from https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2026/08/dal2026-roundup-1.html

7. Anita Barry - She has played so many of my games! And this time she has remembered Frau Endrucks through the little blocks in her round.

(pattern ready)

8. Donna McDade - the one who put it into my head about the next DAL and because of whom this 2026 challenge came about! And as always she tatted 8 starter motifs to add rounds to, 4 of which she has already completed with patterns! She says her motifs are not blocked yet.
Version 1 - her upside down clover round.
(pattern ready)
Version 2 - Using up some of her leftover stars from her award-winning quilt.
(pattern ready)

Version 3 - Clever application of colour with frequent use of the shoelace trick! I call it the Mind-Twister motif.
(pattern ready)
Version 4 - Snail!!! Who would've thought to use the square motif to create a snail?! And she has something up her sleeve which will be revealed at the very end .... curious.
(pattern ready)

9. Ninetta Caruso - If Donna takes top position in the number of versions she is tatting, Ninetta is at the top for the number of rounds she has added - 9 rounds!!!
(pattern awaited)

10. Linda Mazerat - created 2 rounds for this very elegant motif with 'trees' in the corners. But guess what? She only learned tatting in February this year!!!! And this is her first attempt at designing. Could've fooled me - it is so professional and masterful.
"I had a great time participating in this challenge. That's when we realize that creating a pattern is not that easy."
She has also started tatting more of this motif for a runner. She uploaded a video on Instagram.
(pattern ready, French & English)

11. Marie-helene Longau
- She readily 'accepted the challenge' and added 3 rounds in this beautiful motif!
(pattern ready in French & English)

12. Silvana Buonvino - has been quite active in our Endrucks group and here she added several rounds to the base motif. The 7 additional colourful rounds create a rangoli or mandala effect.
Silvana let her shuttles do the work and is regretful that she does not remember the counts.
(no pattern)

13. Muskaan - I've already shared my thoughts here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2026/08/my-round-3.html and no progress on the pattern presentation. Got busy with all the rest that have arrived ;-P
(pattern ready)

14. KRine créatif - This is KRine's first attempt at designing, too! I think she did a really nice job and I love how well her colours fit. She even sent in her diagram!
She tried many and finally chose this as her last model for now. She has decided to train on patterns shared by professional designers to understand and learn and return to improve on the above piece when she has gained more experience. We wish her well!
(pattern ready)

There has been some incidental consequences and learning pertaining to this challenge. I have already touched upon some and will share more in the next post.

... to be continued ...

There are no words that can fully express my gratitude to each of you for participating so enthusiastically and creating more beauty!

leaf to star spinoff

Pin It now!

A large majority of our games in the FB group have ended up with more spin-offs and patterns than what we originally went in with. The same happened with the #LeafMeEndrucks Sep2024 game where you got to see the beautiful versions collated in four roundup posts (links at the end). One such is a star (which started out as a starfish) born from the combination of five E15 Leaf Doodles #2.

Following is the E15 LEAFY  STAR  by Manju Talekar (Sep2024)  pattern PDF link -   https://drive.google.com/file/d/15PQwxt3BXZkEv7kPSRK_U091VnSsqTTj/view

Manju sent in her drawing with the stitch counts, notes and tips and we soon converted it into an Inkscape diagram and complete presentation.
The negative space in the center created when 5 leaves are joined, is filled with a simple medallion.
NOTE: The model can be tatted continuously (in one pass) by climbing out of the center motif with a split chain and climbing into the first arm with a split ring. This option is provided in the PDF.

It didn't take long at all for some members to jump in with their versions!

Gelsomina Carbone - (Nov2024)

Now isn't this interesting how Gelsomina arranged the star as a flower with a large bead in the center!

Jessica Hanson - (Oct2024 and Oct2025)

Notice that she did away with all decorative picots, giving clean outlines and a sharper star shape!

Such lovely backgrounds!
Jessica tatted her white version last year and showed us the two pink models earlier this month. She considers this one of her favourites!
Notice that the lower model has beads - minimalist but strategically placed. Let me repeat what she asked in FB to help her decide, and perhaps you can pitch in with your preference --
"To bead or not to bead? Which do you like better?"

Liberata Cacciottolo - (Nov2024)
This version in metallic thread looks quite sparkly with relatively long picots and the shadows seemingly uplifting the model!

Mela Cabo - (Feb2025)

Another lovely shade of metallic thread and a nice background .

Silvana Buonvino - (Nov2024)
Silvana's silver center and gold arms highlight the pattern in a way different from the monocolour ones.

Now that it is stars and snowflakes time of the year, we expect plenty more models to fall into our lap!

Now this E15 motif is so versatile that I myself adapted it to one or more versions of leaves, tree, candle flames, bell, poinsettia, maize, etc. etc. And a year before this leafy star, Paola Emilia Rotuletti created the E15 Star (Oct2023) which was also used in the Dec2023 game. While Ninetta will share all pics and details, you can find Paola's version in our Snowflakes and Stars from Endrucks Direectory here -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NKMYK3i4PI9pRmyotGCk5GkV2xcDS_hSgJfh322EQFQ/view

Moreover, if you remember, Manju herself also created the enigmatic E15 Ganesh, E15 Holly Leaves, etc., during the game.

Please use the hashtag #Endrucks1920Project, and cite the name of the designer and pattern when you post your version on any social media platform. And the hashtag for this game is #LeafMeEndrucks.

Thank you everybody, for making this all worthwhile and keeping Ninetta and me happily busy :-) Now if only we could tat all of the wonderful ideas and patterns that keep coming in ;-D

colour me happy

Pin It now!

As we approach Holi, the festival of colours, happiness came my way through friends who participated in my design-along challenge!

On a lark I had converted my motif into a DAL challenge here and am so happy to see the motifs flowing in, along with respective patterns!!! Instead of waiting, let me share the progress so far. Interestingly, 5 of the 7 current participants are my Italian friends. They never fail to impress.

Compiled in this document, Muskaan's 2025 DAL Challenge  - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view  Save this link and read for more details and updates (and larger images).

I've tried to keep this post short and direct since all details are already in this document -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view

There are no words to profusely thank Daniela, Paola, Silvana, Michelle, Adriana, & Lella!

Most of them had participated in last year's DAL Celtic Snowflake challenge, too! You can join any time you wish and contact/tag me when you do! I'm sure most of these models will inspire you to take up the challenge. It doesn't matter if you tat with a needle or shuttle, if you haven't designed before, ... you can do it!

a collective gift 2

Pin It now!

Life has taken on this unhealthy habit of getting in my way! It took me way longer to publish this post than was required. I also apologise to all my blogger friends for not commenting, even though most times I read the posts. Without much ado, here's part 2, with patterns. Read part 1 here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2024/11/a-collective-gift-1.html

12. Mariola Siwek - drew her visualization overnight and her tatted replication did full justice to the diagram!

However, the stitch count numbers on the image were not sharp, so I had started diagramming it first. I am happy to say that at least this diagrammed pattern is now in the Google Docs. Link at the end.

13. Ninetta Caruso - designed Rounds 3 to 5 and tatted two models with options and also prepared a PDF!

This version has treble tatting in Round 3.

14. Paola Bevilacqua - designed Round 3 and converted her model into an ice drop!
Watch her short video showing work in progress -https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iXWwtyBrJp2o5Sb2GUMh8FO5MAKk-QFt/view

15. Silvana Buonvino - designed Round 3 with onion rings!
It has that fractal feel, doesn't it?

16. Stella Marina - designed Round 3 but with the models coming in, she decided to go for a bit more stylish decoration and overlapping chains!

17. Vani Kattoju - designed Round 3 and tatted two models and then went on to design a 4th round in her third model!

Nice dendrites in the fourth round!

18. Wanda Salmans - designed Rounds 3 & 4 and shared her journey, thoughts, and process in her blog post (https://www.wandasknottythoughts.com/2023/06/old-edging-and-a-dal-snowflake/) and also spoke about it in her inaugural YouTube video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsD-3AkFODQ&feature=youtu.be.
The snowflake looks good even after Round 3.

Such a difference in shades!

19. Dan Grady - started tatting his Round 3 design but the work is still not complete; obviously discarded a long time back.

20. Muskaan - designed Round 3 and shared pics and design journey in the following posts -https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/05/problem.html

And as promised, I am sharing the article (I removed the QR codes and added an Author's note) which has the pattern as well.

*******************

AND now for all the patterns you are hopefully waiting for and have kept your shuttles/needles ready--

Feel free to join in the challenge by designing your own rounds or choose and tat any of the 25 patterns listed in the doc above. Do send me pics and feedback to be shared with the respective designer or to add you to the 20 designing friends!

Notice that you can interlace the first two motifs as you wish. Some designers chose one, some the other although to keep things simple I had shared only the model on the right in my invitation.

Many many many thanks to each and every participant for your wonderful and inspiring work(s) and for sharing it with the tatting community. It is indeed tremendous fun designing with friends!

picot me roundup 3

Pin It now!

I had shifted Ninetta's entries to this Part 3 in order to equalise all 3 posts. And then I got caught up in a lot of other stuff and this post got delayed. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise 'coz a few more butterflies fluttered in!
Game - #PicotMeEndrucks April2024
Pattern - Antonia Lai's E32 adaptation 'Life is Bliss butterfly'
Objective - Use ornamental picots to embellish the butterfly motif.
Roundups and details - Part 1  ; Part 2

21. Ninetta Caruso - started a virtual butterfly effect when she used Celtic Knotted Picots! Many members used the CKP, albeit in different ways, as you would've seen in previous roundups.
Calling it her Frilly Butterfly, she says, "This is the frilly butterfly that I got, ....  I tried for my first time the "Celtic knotted picot", developed by Sabina Carden-Madden, I followed her tutorial shared years ago, that luckily can be reached again using the wayback machine:
https://web.archive.org/web/20190108165755/http://www.paradisetreasures.com/ckp.html. Thank you for the fun! It's wonderful that in tatting we never stop learning!"
To me, her CKPs themselves looked like tiny butterflies!
Her 2nd entry was even frillier than the first one and she called it the Fluffy Butterfly.
She says "This is my fluffy butterfly, ... these are "layered picots", they are called also floral picots or ruffled picots, it is like the Victorian set but with picots between sections of half stitches, it's a technique already found in Priscilla's patterns."
The top view is in the inset.

22. Reiko Akamatsu - started this circular edging with a series of butterflies.
It's still a WIP and the amazing part is that she does not seem to have altered the stitch count at all. A truly versatile motif!

23. Sabine Robert - joined us for the first time with 3 versions!
She says, " - I start tatting with this Life is Bliss Butterfly pattern (2nd project, after some trainings). Not so easy, I need to do more and more"
One can already see her progress and improvement! And adding beads is not always easy for a new tatter.

24. Sara Dougan - is a new member, too.
She used a combination of long decorative picots, double picots, and butterfly picots!

25. Silvana Buonvino - sent in these delightfully coloured versions!
Besides the pearls and beads, she used double picots, triple picots, and Josephine Picots. She asked whether the JPs could be made on rings and tried out the suggestions for her 4th butterfly!

Voila, her 4th entry has Josephine Picots on rings as well as on chains!
Silvana embellished her own skills along with the butterfly!

26. Stephanie Mc (Tattimic) - shared her ideation and design process and has promised us the pattern, too!
Her 3 idea sketches (which inspired Lauretta Tondelli to learn the CKP) for which she asked for feedback.
The 3 versions that finally emerged. The one on the right uses balanced double stitches to stabilise the long "wobbly" chains and a scroll of rings and chains for the bottom wings.
She says, "But then, I still didn't have any picots, which wouldn't do for a #picotmeendrucks, right? So I asked myself how I could add a shape inside the largest loop and still use the crocheted picots suggested in the list of ideas (I like it! It's so super cute!). That's when all hell broke loose, because it meant to rethink again the initial pattern (so no real onion rings, for exemple), and I ended up with the design you see on the left.
That being said, thank you for the initial challenge, haha. It sparked my imagination!"
And what a spark it is!

The metamorphosis process in thread!
She says, "And here are a couple of tests I made along the way. I often see people wondering how to create new design. That's one way to go : trial and error, haha."
This is proof that designing is not always easy, despite the numerous paths one can take to convert an idea into thread.

27. Vani Kattoju - heeded my request and shared her 3 versions though she was not fully satisfied with her working. Appreciate it, Vani!
She says, "My first attempt at using vapor picots, Mrs Mee picots and tuft picots. A little Not so perfect butterfly."
She used a mix of double picots, "...layered picots and twisted picots."

For her 3rd version,  "I tried daisy picots as the highlight along with few double picots."
This motif has been the vehicle for a lot of first learnings and practice makes perfect.

28. Wanda Salmans - created 5 versions and blogged about each of them.
She says, "My first try at the Picot Me Endrucks April 2024 Game of the Month. The one on the left is the pattern adaption by Antonia Lai. I started it several times - it helps not to be tired or distracted when starting something new. For the second one, I played around with picots. I used HH20-126 Purple Splendor."
Her 2nd version has overlapping double picots and twisted picots.
Her post - https://www.wandasknottythoughts.com/2024/04/playing-with-butterflies/
3rd version is decorated with chains on long picots, giving a scalloped edge to the wings. She has used several bits and pieces on her 'Safety Pin Brooch'.
Read all about it here: https://www.wandasknottythoughts.com/2024/04/safety-pin-brooch/
Both 4th and 5th versions use what Mark Myers' called the Picot Lock Join. It is basically a lock join made with the 2nd shuttle to a picot and the basic join in inverted tatting.

29. Lou Bunker - made sure her butterflies fluttered around in June.
She says, "Fun little pattern works up fast, very addictive."
Some of her cuties have beads and double picots.

30. Manju Talekar - has this beaded beauty to share, sent in June.

She says, "I tatted it with Lizbeth variegated thread #20 color 123. The transparent glass bead in the center reflects light but cannot be seen in the picture. Wings can move up and down by the side of glass bead. Enjoyed making it."
A tatted butterfly that can actually fly - wonderful!

UPDATE (Dec2025):
31. Debbie L Fister - Sep2024
Debbie says - Question: if a pattern calls for a normal picot would substituting decorative picots change the pattern significantly? What modifications should I consider?
thank you very much. I am a bit surprised that the photo is so messy. I decided I am not a designer (yet). I have to say this was a challenge, but I really wanted to try Celtic rings. As for substitions: 3 graduated picots with 0 ds between adds 2 ds. Same with a double picot.
But what about interlocking or tufted? The rings don't seem to that different in size, but now I'm thinking the extra ds might affect the way the corner fits on the book page.

So this brings us to the end of the Picot Me Endrucks roundup. Ninetta and I are so grateful for this huge interest and the beauties that emerged from the game, besides the learning, exploration and experimentation.

At final count we have an exciting 31 participants and 76 butterflies!!! Remember, if you have made any Endrucksian pattern you are free to send it to either Ninetta or to me at any time. Leave a comment in our respective blogs if you wish. (all relevant links on the right panel of this blog)

Many many thanks to all our participants for sharing your work and thoughts and brightening up the tatting skies with these lovely creations!
