never be late

Pin It now!

I barely made it before the end date.

This month we have a very special game in our Endrucks FB group. We were supposed to convert Endrucks' pattern #30 into a cross and those who didn't want to tat a cross, could do a bookmark, bracelet, etc. I chose to do a cancer awareness ribbon, but with beads. Beads to signify the happiness/bling of being a survivor and also to be able to wear it as a bracelet if so desired.

It is for a very special and sweet friend who, though being merely a couple of years younger, insists on being a younger sister and calling me 'badi didi' ;-D Well, she certainly has my blessing and good wishes always 💕
And never be late to detect any lump and get it checked.

This is worked in Anchor Pearl Cotton size 8 with randomly loaded 13/0 (red) and 17/0 (clear) seed beads. They add a nice weight to the piece and it feels good to wear it. I didn't inset any findings, though, and for a 7 inches long bracelet make one repeat less.

One can play with colours, too! Use any Reposition Method to get the desired thread/colour placement.

This is one of the patterns I had attempted in 2015-16 and couldn't get the chains to lie nicely. While here, too, I could've done better by adding 1 stitch to each segment of the onion ring, this is merely my own tatting tension issue.
While tatting the edge on the other side, I ended up adding 2ds in each chain segment, which I should've done for the first edge as well.

Ninetta Caruso did an excellent job of reworking the pattern and sharing versions, including a corner and a square motif adaptation! Here's the pdf link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f7g8gIB7S3-ggRbdneLYmxfxPcDBoq7u/view . She has also uploaded a diagram-only version in here flickr account which I used - https://www.flickr.com/photos/ninettacaruso/50560777536/ .

Why'd I use two different coloured beads? The clear ones wouldn't have shown up well in the pics and the clear red ones would dominate the ribbon. And loading them randomly on both shuttles was Dr Downplay's flexible path to quick stringing without any calculation of bead position, LOL.
Also, when I started, I had no clear idea where and how I wanted to place the beads.

Shuttle #1 ran out of thread hence had to rewind and re-string beads. Shuttle #2 ran out of beads and had to add more beads. Yet, it was an enjoyable tat and something that went pretty fast considering the number of beads used. Only wish my tatting was better. Well, there's always a next time!

And I am entering this as a second submission this month to splocik's 'Small Decorations' game! I just think it will resonate with many, hence. Thank you, splocik 💖

Many thanks for all the work that went behind reworking this pattern and also creating adaptations, Ninetta!

ribbon hairband pattern

Pin It now!
I was looking for a gift for a little girl when someone posted their working of Jennifer Williams’ Bookmark 3 (bookmark with 2 layers). It could work nicely as a hairband!  But could I adapt my positivity ribbon to it?

Positivity Ribbon Hairband
an adaptation of an awareness ribbon and a bookmark !
(Bookmark 3 by Jennifer Williams)

Tadaa – quick and clean with just some minor tweaks. Completed in a day!

  • It would look nice in 2 colours, but I chose single colour, and added different ribbons to her gift box so she can change as desired.
  • The clever design is also reversible whether worked in same or different colours.
  • Use it as a hairband, bookmark, or a hatband. Or tie it as a bracelet or choker!

Materials & Measurement:
2 shuttles, continuous thread
Anchor pearl cotton size 8 (yellow shade – 00297)
½” wide satin ribbon
Finished ribbon band measures 13”x1” after 26 upper and 14 lower rings

NOTE:
1.      For every 2 rings above, there is 1 ring below
2.      Rings on top, and chains are worked with shuttle1 ; rings below are worked with shuttle2.
3.      For directional tatting, all chains and lower rings are worked backside (RODS)
4.      For joining the top rings, refer to diagrams in this Positivity Ribbon pattern.
5.      Also refer to Jennifer’s Bookmark in two layers for detailed instructions on construction.

PATTERN:
2 shuttles, ctm

top ring1 : 7-5-7   rw, ss
lower ring : 8-8 fold the ring , ss
chain : 2(-2)x5  rw  [5p]
top ring2 : 7-5-7  rw
chain : 2+2(-2)x4  rw  [5p]
Repeat these 5 elements to desired length.
To turn the back:
chain : 2+2(-2)x17 [18p]

On the return, repeat the same pattern but remember that each ring is joined to it’s counterpart, ending with the long chain.
A hollow pocket is created through which ribbon can be inserted. Change the ribbon colour to match the outfit!

There is one difference that occurs in this adaptation – the rings below join at an angel creating a slanting ladder. I like the effect, though not very distinct here.

I can vouch that the hairband looked Gorgeous when she tied it on (as did she ;-P)!

Many many thanks, Jennifer !

Lenore's ribbon

Pin It now!

Remember the positivity ribbon I designed specially for my friend? She was strengthened by your response and thoughts. The day she came back with good news was the same evening I received news of another online friend who is terribly ill. Do good and bad news travel in pairs?!
Simultaneously, a facebook group Chiacchierino: Filo, Amore e Fantasia put out Lenore’s pattern, with diagram by Ninetta. Read details here, along with pattern links.

I chose teal (in pearl cotton) to support my 'always tatting' friend.

The 2nd ribbon has beads in 2 colours – green and transparent – the rings going up have green, while on the return the chains have green. Opposite for transparent beads. I wanted to give it a dimensional look, though not very successful

So do come and say 'Hi'. Let's send her some good cheer & prayers this Easter weekend.

a gesture of thanks

Pin It now!

It is so heartwarming to see people from around the globe come forward to send positive thoughts and energy virtually and digitally. As a small thank-you gesture, this is the pattern for the awareness ribbon.

When I made it earlier this month (without any direct pattern/reference), I thought I’d come across the body design on pinterest. After a lot of hunting, I finally found it this morning here and here - centre row of a vintage insertion from Priscilla!

A single page pdf with diagrams and a few suggestions – Positivity Ribbon pattern
One working diagram is included for transition to next row.
I think it's nice to personalise the ribbon.

TIP : In order to hide the colour blips in the tinted lavender, I used Ninetta’s blipless join, which is my go-to on the rare occasions I use such a join. However this time, I counted the join as a complete stitch and I truly like the effect! Can you tell the difference between stitch and join?
Will be using it more often now.

Techniques I used: frontside/backside tatting, folded chain (similar to folded rings), blipless join.
Both ribbons are worked with Red Rose pearl cotton size 8 (≡ 20).

This one-pass shuttle and ball pattern could work well as a straight edging or insertion.  But for a bracelet or choker, some tweaking will be required if one wants to have beads on the joining picots. I hope to get around to it....

A slight modification of the butterfly I used on this heart. It has a Josephine ring for head and a lock chain wrapped around for body. All with one shuttle, with a length of thread left at beginning to tat the lock chain.

UPDATE : This pattern is adapted into a hairband - Positivity Hairband.

the support a group provides is priceless !
