I am a hair model

Pin It now!

My friend Jane McLellan has been asking to see a hair bun net modelled every time I tat one. Several other friends joined in this time, so here is a quick pic.

This photo was taken last night at the end of a long day out. Hence the hair and net is a bit messed up, but it was then or who knows when. Hubby obliged 💙.

The occasion was such that I opted for a sari rather than the churidar set I had shown previously - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/05/snatched.html . This is one of my favourite sari and print - a pure handloom chiffon with hand-dyed Jaipuri Lehariya tie-and-dye. I have several in different colours, some in 2 colours.

Originally, this blue sari was a crepe chiffon. We were told to never send it to the dry cleaners, nor iron it. My laziness ended up with the crepe effect flattening out to a flat chiffon. Still looks good, though - the vibrant blue is unbeatable.

I strung a white satin ribbon through the last round. All I need is an overhand tie and the 2 ends are wound around the base of the bun, one in either direction. There are several ways, but this is how I prefer it, since the tension can be adjusted easily (I keep it slightly on the loose side).
Like I said in my earlier post, if planned early, beads could've been arranged in some inner rounds so as to be more visible.

And this morning, the ribbon was removed, the hair bun net slightly dampened and blocked, and back on the table as a doily. Cinderella's day out has come to an end, LOL

  1. Looks fabulous! I'd have liked to see a picture of the sari too (greedy aren't I?) I did smile at the thought of the hairnet's multipurpose life.

    1. Ha, Jane, I actually tried to Google up some images for a similar sari while posting today, but none of them did justice. Perhaps some other day, I might take a pic of some of them together. 💙💙💙

  3. Looks brilliant, and I love the colours, I like the idea of multi purpose with being a doily and a hair covering. I remember Carollyn used to use tatting to cover her hair. mine is not long enough to even put up in any shape.

    1. Carollyn was truly talented. 💙💙💙 Mel, too, made a hair bun net and shared the pattern, Margaret. She used a hair elastic rather than ribbon/I-cord.

  4. Brilliant plan to use the ribbon so that the bun cover can double as a doily. My hair is quite fine and slippery. I need the elastic to keep the hair in the bun shape so that I arrive home with my cover intact! Once the elastic wears out, I'll have to experiment with a ribbon.

    1. Maybe you could weave a ribbon around and elastic band and through the doily so that you can remove the elastic band when worn and replace or use as a doily when done. ;)

    2. I use hair pins to keep the coif in shape, Mel, so the net is mainly to keep it all tidy, avoid knotting (when lying down), and of course for show 😀😁💗
I had bought a pack of nice hair elastics to attach to net, but have been avoiding them due to the finality.
      I like Sue's suggestion!

  5. Ooh, it's beautiful! I'm with Jane - I'd love to see the sari, too. My hair is not very thick, but it IS long, so I twist the hair around itself, then use a 'fat' elastic to hold the bun in place, then tie my net on with ribbon. The 'fat' elastic (elastic covered with stretchy fabric of some sort) is close to the color of my hair, so it makes the bun look a little larger. Funny, many of us like to wear our hair up, but we're all different, with different hair textures, thicknesses, and lengths....and we all put it up slightly differently, yet get the same/similar results.

    1. So true, Steph 💙💙💙 When my head had more hair, I used to knot the bun lower on my nape. Now practicality rules 😁 The net does add a facade of thickness, though!

  6. Even after a long day, the hair net is still sitting well and it looks very fetching! I hope you got compliments for it from people who saw it. That sari sounds really pretty as well! Even without the crinkliness heh.
