CWJ for EP tuts

Pin It now!

You might remember that I have been mentioning a resource document (EP Tutorials) from the perspective of Endrucks' original patterns and derivatives. Ninetta and I decided to restrict the technique tutorial links to our respective blogs, and the Endrucks 1920 Project, without any outside source. To that end we even created some new pictorials and/or videos - some of which are still underway.

The Catherine wheel join (CWJ), however, is something both of us had in our folders for the last several years but hadn't shared it online. My pictorial is from 2020 which I did for my Lock Join Plus series aka Reposition Methods, while Ninetta's diagrams were also drawn many years back. Bringing the two together, we present this PDF. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UmmjBqNwwQYIb9Ms9_-T5K6dPnZENCwl/view

A few selected pics from the pictorial -

In the same 2020 folder I have the pics for working the CWJ backside, but have not presented them here. Perhaps at a future date I will work on that presentation and include it.

And Ninetta Caruso's diagram page -
        Download the PDFs :
Lock Join Plus aka Reposition Options series - https://drive.google.com/file/d/17zsM3JaLO7r0ajg8VOnv5IcJ-kLNqEiU/view
And in case you want a practice pattern, here's a quick one - E28 Heart by Muskaan - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-rWqmDAd51VwxOqtt9spD-FIX5zYDAUE/view

There are already plenty of tutorials, including video demonstrations on this join, links to which you can find by clicking on the Tatting Resources tab above. I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as too many resources. Each of us learns in their own way and one never knows which tutorial will click for an individual. So, hope some of you find this helpful.
Happy tatting!

a new heart pattern

Pin It now!

This year our Endrucks FB group has probably felt a bit orphaned with both Ninetta and I being engaged elsewhere. We miss the interaction and games, but just cannot carve out enough time at present. So it was such a wonderful surprise to see a new heart derived from Endrucks' pattern E13 by Lella Loops! She is an excellent needle tatter and has been a participant in almost all our games and more. She sent us the diagram and I prepared the rest of the presentation for shuttle tatting.

E13 Cuore Mio (My Heart) by Lella Loops, Feb 2026 for #Endrucks1920Project ... click to download pattern PDF - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hs_J5JF1kOf7j8RE-4xqZGK4y7fcQHFw/view  derived from Eleonore Endrucks' E13 pattern from 'Die Schiffchen-Spitzen', 1920.

It is a very clever construction ... Lella 'erased' parts of the lace and brought together two motifs to create this heart, with minimal changes to the stitch count, etc.!

I quickly tatted up my own model with shuttle and though I am not overly happy with my work, it will have to do for now. Worked in Anchor size 20 (equivalent to Lizbeth 10), it is 2" across and a bit more than 1-1/4" high.

It is a very easy pattern with the count being 6 or a multiple of 6 for each element and all rings are worked from the front in case of directional tatting.

The drop or inward picot is made using the node or set stitch - 2fhs, p, 2shs.

Not only does it tat up quickly and can be used to empty shuttles (it needs very little thread on 2nd shuttle) but I also love the way the two long side chains on the lower side have that little curve before tapering down. Now if only I had noticed the uneven closure of the large ring it wouldn't have tilted to the right, LOL!

Please use the hashtag (#Endrucks1920Project) and the name of the designer & pattern when you post online. Not only is it a courteous gesture to give credit, but also makes it easier for others to find the pattern. , ......

I know it is too late for today, but hey we don't need a single day or a reason to tat hearts to our heart's content, right?! Do here are some more free heart patterns - Hearts from Endrucks directory -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view  and my own heart patterns -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LpHU69wNsQspIHgvt9pihgTNhHFDRBab3I5_MDEYyNw/view  (hmm, looks like need to update it!)

💗 Many many thanks to Lella Loops for her lovely heart and all her contributions!  💗

something new

Pin It now!

For the last several weeks, starting around mid-December, I've been mainly focused on completing the Glossary for the book 'Six T's of Shuttle Tatting' by Net Best. Long back I had divided the glossary into separate letter files for ease of work and have gone through anywhere between 5 to 10 drafts of each over the years. Angela has been a patient and efficient support. This time it is 'final' ... my humble request to the tatting community is "Please stop bringing out new effects and techniques for this year so that I won't need to include it in the glossary ;-P Take a pause, my talented community!" 😁

So anyway, I've been tatting samplers for the glossary which were missing or for new entries. This, and the fact that I need a refresher on a few 'rarely' used techniques, I took up Natalie Rogers' Picot Bingo 2026 challenge again this year after skipping it last year. But instead of a completed project I might only make small samplers - to keep it short and quick. Some of these will actually dovetail with the glossary samplers, thus reducing any distraction or time constraint.

Learnt something 'new' - Stacked Dimpled Split Rings by Sandra Eichelberger (Crazy Mom Tats). It is a very clever application of techniques towards continuous tatting which she shared here - https://psychotatter.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-to-tat-stacked-dimpled-split-ring.html

NOTE: 'Stacked' is used for tatted elements that overlap and/or lay one above the other as a 3D formation. Hence in the present technique, 'stacked' is a bit of a misnomer and is probably used to indicate continuous tatting in a line or row of rings. (Thanks, Mary Arnold)

I used her stitch count. It is like working a split ring backwards where the 1st side is worked after working the 2nd side and the 1st side lies on the right instead of the left. Reminds me of Teri Dusenbury's SQDR (where she started with 1ds and then the entire ring was worked with reverse stitches) or a Reverse Ring, applied here to a dimpled yorkie split down the center.

It was a bit of a challenge to figure out the process but once I got it, it went smoothly. I think a pictorial or a video would help a great deal.
TIP: The main thing to keep in mind is to make the mock picot long enough. Notice how the dimple in the 2nd heart from top is less pronounced? The fault lies in a short mock or false picot.

Tied in a quick tassel made from the first scrap threads I could get my hands on. So one more tatted bookmark in my stash, though the body could've been longer.
The boxes crossed out in the Picot Bingo 2026 game (Level 2) -
  • Dimpled Ring - I'm sure these count even if they are split.
  • Tat a Rings Only Pattern - why do we limit ourselves to vintage rings only style patterns, LOL?
  • Tat a Heart - five hearts here.
  • Mock Picots - gravely important in this pattern/technique!
Two different levels of cards are shared by Natalie although I believe the above project falls in a bit of a higher category than even Level 2 (wink, wink). Check out the details and downloads here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/happy-new-year-147124370,

UPDATE: (31 Jan 2026) Jane McLellan had worked on this technique to create a bookmark and a beaded bracelet here - https://janemactats.blogspot.com/search?q=stacked+dimple+rings
Many thanks to Sandra and Natalie !!! Keep it interesting and challenging! Great opportunities for new learning and consolidation of past learning.

EP Medley 3

Pin It now!

Continuing from my last post, here are some more models that were tatted, derived, adapted or designed for the Endrucks 1920 Project. Due to the 20 tags limit in blogger, I had separated these from the previous EP medley as containing tatting around bezel and/or with beads.

E16 derivative - adaptation & rearrangements.
E16 Wrist or Slave Bracelet derived and tatted by Natalia Prokhorova (May 2025)
reworked E16 pattern:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MuZTviUxkdBoz24xXglcn7wbO1rHuhm8/view
Now isn't this a beauty!!! Extracting two main motifs from the E16 pattern and positioning them into this gorgeous hand jewellery!
Here's what Natalia says -
Motif 16. I slightly changed the central motif, made it more symmetrical and removed one row of the chain that did not fit into the pattern (too dense). I embroidered with beads that I found at home, so the choice was not rich. In principle, the pattern works, only some corrections are needed -in some places add a couple of knots, in others remove. I won't talk about other shortcomings. I can post the patterns if someone wants to play with them.

Ninetta is working on presenting this pattern where more pics will be shared.

E43, E16, & E12 adaptations & rearrangements
Three Fish Necklace - derived and tatted by Natalia Prokhorova (Oct 2025)
reworked E12 pattern: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E26K3FFgHygdkEKUvVHn-f0MFlENDsqA/view
Imagination knows no bounds!
This is what Natalia says -
This is a necklace with three fish: the first fish is a pattern 43 from Manju Talekar + some beads, the second fish has the tail from pattern 43 (it used to be the head, it's movable) + natural shell, cast using the Guastalla Edda method, the third one is pattern 12 (the medallion - adaptation by Krystyna Mura), the middle is from the pattern 43 too.

When I asked her whether there was any cultural significance to the fish, she replied -
I just liked the pattern, but one fish wasn't enough, and two looked odd, so I had to make a third. Just in case, I tatted two more small motifs, but that was clearly too much, so I made earrings out of them, although they're rather poorly tatted. The pattern for the first and third fish already exists, with minor modifications, and it's unlikely anyone will make a shell of the same shape and size, so a separate file isn't really necessary....We love to eat fish, so from a gastronomic point of view, it is present in our culture. I live in Canada, in a small town also called "lobster capital".

E32 Heart Ice Drop adaptation by Lella Loops (Feb2025)
adapted from E32 Ice Drop by Ninetta Caruso:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dT064jDn98F0_KEZabs51_GF9IxPyEQI/view
Simple yet clever adaptation and again a confirmation that needle can be used effectively to tat these patterns.
Lella Loops says -
My needle tatted version of E32 ice drop by Ninetta Caruso, adapted for Valentine's day.
Two needles and little changes to reach the heart shape (or I tried to)
Well it worked splendidly, didn't it!
I just noticed that this pattern PDF has notated count on the model pic as a quick share. So we need to add the written pattern as well.

E28 & E24 combo adaptation & arrangement
by Manju Talekar (April 2025)
reworked E24 pattern:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZpHou6AOWM3LZJVbEMNB_gurWqtjazRx/view
We were pleasantly surprised when this cute bunny hopped into our FB group on April 1st this year!
Manju wrote -
Happy International Tatting Day 2025 !
Greetings from Bunny, popped out from E-28 Heart by Muskaan and E-24 pattern reworked by Ninetta, Thanks to you both for the pattern.
Happy Endrucksian tatting
Some day in future, we will ask her for the pattern and prepare a PDF. Hopefully before Easter 2026?

E32 application
E32 tatted decoration for tealight candle by Marja Jalo (Nov 2025)
My blog list threw up a sparkling surprise on Sunday in the form of the E32 edging being used so effectively to decorate the tealight candle! Read more about the entire project and Marja's notes and thoughts in her blogpost here - https://solmujenlumoissa.blogspot.com/2025/11/e32-frivoliteettikoriste.html

Ninetta and I are forever grateful for the wonderful models tatted and shared ... each one inspires towards further play!

shagun tatting

Pin It now!

'Shagun' is a Hindi word derived from Sanskrit which denotes good omen, auspiciousness, a token, .... Though it it is associated more with Hindu rituals, we also use it in daily life to commemorate an event, an occasion, or any good news with the elders blessing the young with a symbolic token. Or if we cannot perform an entire task, some small part of the ritual/task is started on an auspicious day.

This is what I try to do every International Tatting Day! This day is also very special for personal reasons and I tend to be busy elsewhere. Yet I make it a point to pick up my shuttle and thread and tat at least a ring or two and not let the day 'pass by' ;-D Despite a very busy first half, I managed to find time from evening onwards and actually completed not one but two motifs! One had only 2 rings and a chain left to tat (I'll share this tomorrow) while the heart motif I started from scratch and completed!

doesn't it look like a possible angel?!
My new version using graduated and 'erect' vapour stitch which is more like a picot here. I was inspired by a recently shared Turkish Tatting video by Eftelyanin Mekikleri where there are many more than 3 wraps and the bare thread is not pulled down so that the stitch/picot stands erect. Also, the wraps are followed by a complete stitch rather than the 2nd half-stitch.
I did it all in tatting. But it was not easy and many of my stitches are not as neat as they should/could be. I had started one in perle cotton but the thread unraveled so much that I snipped it off and started afresh with this Anchor size 20 thread.
TIP: I suggest using 2 shuttles so that the thread can be balanced again by suspending the shuttle frequently. And use tightly twisted thread, polyester, silk, ....

I winged it and don't really have an exact count for the decorated chain. I started and ended with vapour stitch (3 wraps) but graduated up to 7 wraps.
The motif is 4cms wide and 3cms high.

I had more shagun tatting to share - something tiny and fun, but will continue in a couple of days. Time to juggle ;-D Meanwhile I also have much more to share on the vapour stitch as well when I can take some pics ....

I hope you did much more than shagun tatting, like I ended up doing ;-D

happy tatting day

Pin It now! The happy day of tatting, tatted lace, and tatters is here again! Hope you are well-stocked with threads, shuttles/needles, patterns, and ideas to feed your creativity, and of course tea and chocolates to feed your tummies! I hope to get tatting later today.

In our Endrucks 1920 Project Facebook group, Ninetta has initiated a small event with a small motif pattern. The E28 Heart which I had derived from Eleonore Endrucks' pattern #28.

When she shared the idea with me, I realised that my presentation from 2023 had been a quick one. So I took some time to update the PDF as well as tat another heart to refresh my memory, this time in two colours.

You don't need to be a member of our FB group to join in! Here's the pattern link and if you send me or Ninetta a pic of your finished heart, we would be so happy to include it. (see top right section of my blog for relevant links under 'Follow Me'). And if it is your first Endrucks' pattern, you will be the recipient of a token gift.

E28 Heart by Muskaan - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-rWqmDAd51VwxOqtt9spD-FIX5zYDAUE/view

Ninetta tatted a pair of beautiful earrings. What will you do with the motifs you tat? I have a few ideas but it all depend on how much time I can devote.

So, happy tatting and happy ITD to all my readers and followers! Spread the cheer!
And a huge thanks to Ninetta!

E15 leafy bonanza

Pin It now!

Now this was tatted back in May for the InflateMeEndrucks game and my inner child, as usual, wanted to arrange them to see what new shapes emerged! But the old woman in me promptly forgot to share the pics. LOL. Fortunately, I found them right on time for our new game this month - Leaf Me Endrucks! More about that in the next post.

Although the game is confined to tatting leaves, it will be interesting to see how they will be used/applied. To that end Ninetta and I thought it okay to share some ideas.

Let me simply show you what I have within my limited imagination. Of course, some tweaks will be required - something added, something deleted, some colours changed, and so on - to bring them to life. I sincerely hope you can find more ideas and figures beyond the ones my eyes saw and write it in the comments.

But first, the pattern is E15 Leaf Doodle #1 (derived from Endrucks' 1920 pattern #15) with additional picots along the edge for sewing (immaterial to the shape). Also, if the chain H is shortened to 4ds instead of 6ds, the leaf turns out flat. And since I tat frontside/backside, the leaves are mirror images. PDF download link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NL5KHsLxOHkfILCTTKojfhHy6B9v9EG3/view
 1. Heart
2. Betel leaf ; Hazelnut ; Onion

3. Masquerade Mask

4. Spy Goggles ; Cat Eyes ; Angel Wings ; Butterfly Wings

5. Earrings ; Pendant ; other Jewellery pieces

6. Jewellery ; Earrings ; Pendant ; Brooch

7. Tatting Shuttle ; Hair Clip or Hairband Embellishment

8. Spindle Motif. Can be joined along the tips for a long broad scalloped border
or along a side for polygonal shapes.

9. Angel Wings ; Bracelet

10. a big fat Pheasant ; Hedgehog ; Turtle ; Weevil ; Kiwi ; Rhea
and if you feed in 'arrangements' in the search box, you will find many more such arrangement ideas for various types of motifs, including from Endrucks (but not all are showing up...perhaps I can do a roundup at some future date to refresh my own memory!)

east to west heart!

Pin It now!

My Budding Heart pattern was published in the Feb 2024 issue of 'Talking Tatting' (No.58.3 quarterly newsletter of Queensland Tatters, Australia), courtesy of Judith Connors. I think this is perhaps the third or fourth pattern she has chosen for publication and it is such a huge yet humbling endorsement.

💗💗

Several versions have been tatted which I sometimes come across on different platforms, but to remind you of one very special version from Krystyna Mura (Poland) - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2021/02/palentine-day.html

💗💗

And most recently, is splocik's (Poland) play with the pattern - not one but four! Such cute versions and I love how she attached the dimple to the flower, thus anchoring the long outline. She shares her thoughts and process here - https://oczka2.blogspot.com/2024/02/zainspirowao-mnie-serduszko-frywolitkowe.html

💗💗

If you remember, this heart is part of the Buddy Hearts (2020) collection of 5 patterns, three of which were shared by Anita Barry(USA)! https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2019/02/buddy-hearts.html. This set has been taught in the Online Tatting Class (Feb 2019) and published in the IOLI Bulletin (Summer 2020). Good to see the widespread reach of these little motifs.

You can download all 5 here (long version) - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1frJpMRiHu5fOEH9Zs3VANVGIURZA126_/view   and (short diagram-only version) - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DZFxEDvEwe-rPUv1evgPaxic1sbaEnHC/view

💗💗

I had a mind to tat a new heart pattern but couldn't manage my time and other commitments. However, it is definitely on my trial list and should be shared well before the next season of hearts.

💗💗

💗Many many thanks to Judith, splocik, and of course, Anita and Krystyna!💗

E Hearts

Pin It now!

We have quite a collection of hearts derived from Endrucks' patterns and even more patterns where these hearts have been applied such as bookmarks, coasters, butterflies, etc. There are even more I have spied in other patterns that will hopefully come to life in thread some time. Or I might just share the idea for others to work out.

The above is only a fraction of the hearts/applications I tatted. Found these easily in the two nearest boxes I rummaged through. But there is not a single heart from pattern #1 here, nor butterflies, etc.
It was spur of the moment and I hastily put this collage together.
The above hearts are from E3, E5, E28, E32, E37.

The patterns have been derived by many members and you can download all patterns from the Hearts Directory here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view
And don't forget to look at the eye candy and other pattern directories listed at the end.

If you complete tatting your first pattern from our Endrucks' Collection and show us a pic, we will be happy to send you a little gift!

💖 Happy E Tatting ! 💖

free hearts

Pin It now!

Since hearts are the current flavour as Valentine's Day approaches, I decided to update my pattern doc and share it. Hmm, turns out I 'designed' only one heart last year! I did tat several hearts, both from the Endrucks collection as well as from other designers, even tweaking them to suit personal goals. But I only managed to share one pattern. Wonder what this year will bring .... I have already 'spied' at least 4 ideas - mostly to extract and adapt from Endrucks and at least one other. Let's see how many actually get transferred to thread and pattern.

So here's the link if you wish to tat any and I'd love it if you tagged me or told me about it. My free heart patterns and some inspirational versions -- Heart Patterns by Muskaan -

https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1LpHU69wNsQspIHgvt9pihgTNhHFDRBab3I5_MDEYyNw/

An idea that I won't be execute at present, is to add a Gallery at the end of the doc, shifting received versions there.

And a blog post needs a pic which I am poaching from an older post --

Happy tatting, folks!

what a heart

Pin It now!

Hearts are great motifs to learn and apply new techniques, practice and hone skills, embellish, and create new designs! Look at where this tiny little heart has travelled so far .... without forgetting it's origins!

It all started with Endrucks' pattern #3 (1920), an edging which was reworked and presented by Anita Barry (2020), which inspired AlenAlea Rako to turn it into squares (2021), from which I espied a heart (2022) and Sue Bradham saw a butterfly (2022).

A few months later, when we chose this heart pattern for one of our games (Pretty Me Endrucks Aug2022), more adaptations came about! These include a key chain by Marina MadJar tatting, an enlarged heart motif and one-pass bookmark by Margaret Davies, a coaster by Ninetta Caruso, and a butterfly by Stephaine Mc (Tattimic). Pattern links here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/aug-roundup-1.html

During our game and later, several arrangements were shared including 3-in-1 Earrings, Collar, Bookmark, and other ideas. https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2022/09/playful-hearts.html.

This heart continued to inspire and Ninetta, through her coaster, designed the Tat Me Snowflake (2 versions) in Nov - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZENvdgxihM0YI3Ar_UxP9lqRwprmFotP/view

2023 started with the pattern being tatted and published by Judith Connors in their Talking Tatting, Feb2023 newsletter. She kindly permitted us to share her complete article  - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aJ34xgaE67A0aI8LTj2xYpvx-NQLrBx1/view

Later in June, Michelle Forclaz made additions to the hearts to make the Inside Out Flowers. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13L0NCvkqJM94Bnbnbf4ogVUzhhYjuaSN/view  The pdf also shows a few other adaptations she tried such as a little teddy bear, fox head, and butterfly.

Meanwhile tatters have often picked up the pattern and shared their versions, many with beads, and applications. And 2 new patterns emerged in December.

E3 Heart Butterfly by Jiamrat Supapol https://drive.google.com/file/d/19DWVrfGhrbb-l80icUsFiq4msQhmJTjl/view

and the E3 Heart Square Motif by Reiko Akamatsu where she adapted the E42 doily center to fit snugly inside the square. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YxBre5DlW3RcW3ZJFY7-VrDnzvWeuN6m/view

For more heart derivatives, check the Hearts Directory - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpYw9XMB8Asz8zusj1ZpHvX8A8Ww424-rEVORtxcL1w/view
For more E3 pattern derivatives, check out the other Directories as well. We now have a composite doc listing all directory links (making it easier to reference, etc.). Endrucks Directories  - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w1TZBg-HIzseGEUoJ-rko7tNbtSgZY5A18Oy2Y9Hh0Y/view

Please note that in this post, I have included pics of only the 'new' models that haven't been shared here so far.

Hearty thanks to each and every Endrucksian mentioned here! Hope you continue your exploration and experimentation, sharing the beautiful results.
