design tatting

Pin It now!

Its been a while since I updated the entries that came in for my DAL 2025 challenge. I shared the first 7 versions (with patterns!) here - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2025/03/colour-me-happy.html. Now, the next one to start the challenge was Donna McDade who made 8 versions (3 up from last year's DAL)! I will dedicate an entire post to her next time, since there is a lot of good news to share and celebrate. Meanwhile, these are what my other wonderful participants sent in .....

All versions of Muskaan's DAL 2025 Challenge can be found here -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view

Anita Barry

See the dense 3rd round? Those are Louise Uteg's stacked rings from her 1970s original doily!
I think this 4-round version looks like a nice Christmas wreath.

Padma Mandayam
Round 3 was inspired and adapted from Lella Loops' version, with the addition of a 4th original round.
Written pattern is shared in the google doc.

Janet Crow
A colourful spring version with inclusion of butterflies and more rounds. She graciously presented the pattern in a PDF. https://drive.google.com/file/d/16wfGTDxjNovnfWMYmZfqIgn1tmwDzIgY/view
The motif glued to her hand-sewn bag in which she carries her tatting supplies to meetings, etc.!

Lillyan
Janet's 14 year-old talented granddaughter is trying her hand at many crafts, including tatting! Her version is like clubbing where she adapted and applied Karey Solomon's Cat & Mice pattern. Pattern will be shared if they get due permission.

 Margaret Davies
Despite all the curve balls life throws her way, Margaret has valiantly participated again. She shared her WIP here - https://margaretsdesignercards.blogspot.com/2025/03/happy-international-tatting-day-and.html
Her 5th round ruffled and she decided to cut it off. While this modification lays flat, she might tweak the stitch count at a future date. Hence no pattern shared yet.

Elisabeth Dobbler   worked the initial 2-round motif but was discouraged with the way her picots came out. Shelved for the present. The WIP pic is in the doc.

Join in whenever you can! This is open-ended. Perhaps I will also climb out of my limbo to add another round or two to my own version.

Words fail to express my gratitude and happiness to all participants!

colour me happy

Pin It now!

As we approach Holi, the festival of colours, happiness came my way through friends who participated in my design-along challenge!

On a lark I had converted my motif into a DAL challenge here and am so happy to see the motifs flowing in, along with respective patterns!!! Instead of waiting, let me share the progress so far. Interestingly, 5 of the 7 current participants are my Italian friends. They never fail to impress.

Compiled in this document, Muskaan's 2025 DAL Challenge  - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view  Save this link and read for more details and updates (and larger images).

I've tried to keep this post short and direct since all details are already in this document -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mQmdXWXQmcbXQ48nRz9FBeTJf_DoJqKz/view

There are no words to profusely thank Daniela, Paola, Silvana, Michelle, Adriana, & Lella!

Most of them had participated in last year's DAL Celtic Snowflake challenge, too! You can join any time you wish and contact/tag me when you do! I'm sure most of these models will inspire you to take up the challenge. It doesn't matter if you tat with a needle or shuttle, if you haven't designed before, ... you can do it!

and more

Pin It now!

After reading my posts, Elisabeth Dobler took up the challenge and quickly sent me her version of the DAL Celtic Snowflake, designing a third round and also tweaking the first motif to incorporate Celtic knot picots! And she graciously shared the pattern, too, becoming our 21st participant. It took me some time to diagram it, though. But here it is ....

I realise only now while inking and uploading that we forgot to mention the beads in the center. It looks like she used two beads on each picot and made a swirl join at the end.
There are Maltese rings at the tips and the thinner metallic thread picots fill the ring.

Elisabeth has a way with picots! If you are on Facebook or Instagram, you should look up her work and how she elegantly transforms the models. Her impeccable tatting is so inspiring, too. She frequently sends me pics of her work and I will soon share a few here.

Before I forget, you can find the pattern and all details in this Google Docs -https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pVqM6S5Ng49xk6erSsDyRm3y7SdV2tCIUOCgltze4lM/view

And I also know of two other tatters who tatted the snowflakes -
and Padma M chose to tat Mariola Siwek's version which she shared in her FB account -
UPDATE (Dec2024): The pattern (diagram for Padma's variation is also uploaded in the above document.

Many thanks to all for your participation! Being inspired and inspiring others is an unending cycle of creativity!

a collective gift 1

Pin It now!

... of so many snowflake variations and patterns in one place, from a talented group of generous designers!  Perhaps you recall my invitation to design the next round(s) for a Celtic interlaced center - https://tipsaroundthehome.blogspot.com/2023/05/lets-design-round-3.html... the DAL Celtic Snowflake 'challenge' as several called it. I loved the response and the models that turned up, some almost overnight! And later, when I requested each participant to share their pattern, they readily complied. I compiled them all in a Google Doc, listing them chronologically as they came in.

The main reason for this inordinate delay in sharing with you is two-fold: 1) I wanted to synchronise the patterns, adding a diagram to each or filling in any 'gaps', and 2) I wrote an article on this project for the IOLI Bulletin and wanted to wait a decent amount of time. The first objective hasn't been achieved, unfortunately, though I did begin diagramming. For this I sincerely apologise to my designers, but hope to work on it in future.

I have decided to share the document as is since it is the season of tatting up snowflakes! Please note that the patterns are not tested and there is diversity in presentation styles. We hope you enjoy the individual flavour and range of effects, tools, and techniques and also the story behind each! All details are in the doc, the link to which I will share at the end of the visual display of models. Between my article and the Google docs, the entire backstory is laid out . hence I will not repeat it here.

Presenting them alphabetically ---

1. Aleksandra Pawlik - Round 3 designed and tatted within a day!

2. Anita Barry - Two different versions, both with Round 3 designed!

The difference in backgrounds brings out the mandala effect differently.

Clever use of split rings.

3. Anna Bonelli - Rounds 3 & 4 designed. Makes a nice wheel impression.

4. Antonia Lai - Round 3 designed in single shuttle with bare thread spaces!

5. Barbara Slodka - Round 3 designed with Josephine rings and pleasant pastels

6. Daniela Galli - Round 3 designed and tatted in two shades of metallic threads

7. Donna McDade - designed Round 3 for Five versions! All 5 models have been appliqued on a quilted wall hanging (pic in the doc).

8. Jean Inglis - Round 3 designed. Appears like a flower or wreath.

9. Ladyphoenix tatter - designed Rounds 3 & interlaced Round 4 after discarding two other attempts since it caused cupping.

10. Margaret Davies - designed Rounds 3 & 4 and tatted multiple models till she was satisfied!

11. Lella Loops - designed Round 3 and also styled a Celtic shuttle to work the interlacing in this round! She is a needle tatter.

inflate me roundup

Pin It now!

Our May event saw few participants but the models are so special, highlighting their creative visualization and execution! Without much ado, alphabetically .....

Inflate Me Endrucks May2024 (#InflateMeEndrucks) in Endrucks 1920 Project FB group.

All patterns are from the book ‘Die Schiffchen-Spitzen’,1920, by Frau Eleonore Endrucks-Leichtenstern, reworked in the Endrucks 1920 Project, 2020.

For all updates and important EP linkshttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1w1TZBg-HIzseGEUoJ-rko7tNbtSgZY5A18Oy2Y9Hh0Y/view . Check out the Directories for respective patterns (uninflated).

1. Anna Bonelli - is adept with both needle and shuttle. However, since there is a shuttle in the pic, it is safe to assume this beautiful decoration or pendant is done with shuttle.

E10 - Zinnia Flower inflated

2. Brookie Heightsmen - Always one to think divergently, she adapted two E41 motifs to create this cute beaded hot air balloon equipped with the tiny basket (probably from E44). "...up up and away in my beautiful balloon".
E41 - Motif inflated to Hot Air Balloon

3. Lella Loops - is an accomplished needle tatter. Here's what she says - "My small entry for #InflateMeEndrucks game, from pattern E28. It naturally tends to cup so I thought it was perfect. I insert a little organza pouch with dry lavender flowers. Liz metallic, needle 7."

E28 - Center motif inflated to Lavender Pouch

4. Manju Talekar - Manju joined us in late April and has already participated with such enthusiasm and talent in all our games since. She sent us 3 models and though they do not strictly conform to the rules of the game, we are most happy to showcase her beautiful works, all from E12.
E12 - Sky Blue Angel inflated
"From original Endrucks pattern #12, Angel in white, I modified the skirt with a lace pattern in round and more flare. In the Wings added some small picots in between the large ones. I found it difficult to take a picture showing three dimensional pattern."

E12 - Sky Blue Angel inflated to 3D Bell
"My submission, a bell, Based on Endruck’s pattern #12 & adaptations by Krystyna Mura, tatted in round with little modification in stitch count for rings."

E12 - Sky Blue Angel inflated to 3D Earrings
"Endrucks Pattern #12 & adaptation with diagram by Krystyna Mura. Just a concept..an Ear Dangling, still working on the second one. I think it needs some more refinement, got some ideas while making...
Deliberately made in flag colours, it shows how easily it can be adapted to other colours.

5. Margaret Davies - is a real trooper! Despite life getting solidly in the way, she adamantly whipped out this cute 3D butterfly from E32. Notice how the minimal joins give it an open and relaxed appearance.
E32 - Life is Bliss butterfly inflated
"At last I manage to make another butterfly, this is a 3D butterfly of Life is Bliss butterfly,
Originally I put a bead in the middle of the onion ring, somewhere the bead did not like the middle, it might have been too big, this time I tried again the photo is not easy to take, so I hope you can see it is 3D I put two butterflies together next time I am going to try some beads.
"

6. Muskaan - I've already said all I had to in my respective posts (links under each pic). This inflation became so addictive that my entries inflated to 3! And the third one (tree) has 3 motifs instead of 2.
E38 - Light Aircraft or 3D Lobster inflated

E15 - Leaf Doodle version 1 inflated

7. Ninetta Caruso - quickly tatted a model for our game before it was announced so that we had a range of possible ideas to inspire participants! A master of miniature, later she tatted the cutest little coin purse.
E30 - Square inflated to Biscornu Pin Cushion

Her work in progress. Gives us an idea of how tiny her pin cushion is! And its all handmade!

Keeping the E30 Square pattern intact, she merely added a ring at each corner to span the puffed pin cushion. This modification is inked in the above image.

E10 - Motif inflated to Coin Purse

E10 - Coin Purse with coin inside
With the flap closed, can you see the owl I see?

E10 - Coin Purse open.

8. Ulrike Klauser - joined us from Switzerland a few months back and has demonstrated some beautifully tatted pieces nicely displayed. You can see her lovely tatting (including some Endrucksian) in her new multilingual site - https://schiffchenspitze.ch/en/home
She chose the Slim angel from the E7 pair of Slim and Chubby Angels for this game. She inserted organza inside and placed it on a postcard for a beautiful backdrop!

E7 - The Slim Angels

E7 - The Slim Angel inflated
Doesn't it appear as if the angel is having a blast flying across the lit sky! It's also a good idea for a Flying Kite.

To sum up, we had 8 participants submitting 13 models. And the range is quite wonderful!

Our hearts are inflated with joy and satisfaction at seeing these amazing models! Hope these re-interpretations inspire in future, too.  Many thanks from Ninetta and me.💗
