I’m
in a bind. This is the 3rd snowflake I’m making for the 25 Snowflake Project. It’s from a sketch dated 26th Oct, 2017.
I
started my trial with 2 colours in order to keep track of the shuttles, since
there are so many split rings.
Satisfied,
I worked the yellow one. I was happy at first, but then the proportion of the
arms to the center seemed off, leading to the 2nd prototype in blue.
But
now the spinning/twirling effect seems to be lost, right?
As
I was notating the pics, an idea hit me – I might be able to get back the spinning effect! I’ll have to flip
the SRs such that the one at the base of the dendrite has a larger outer edge
(as in the yellow one)!
Another
idea I’ve been mulling over is graduated picots on the chain linking 2 arms –
long to short to highlight the spin direction. Do you think that will work, or should I keep all decorative
picots away?
What
other suggestion can you offer to improve the design?
Do
you like the design concept? It can also be worked without split rings, but
that will be another flake for later.
All
are worked in Anchor size 40. The yellow is 5cms and blue is 7cms tip to tip.

Not sure if this will work, but it might be worth considering. Can you emphasize the 'spin' effect even more than you did in the yellow one? I was thinking shorten the chain on the blue one and change the split ring to make it 'twirl' a bit more, but again, not sure this will work. You could end up with something looking like a crab that has been stepped on. ;) I'm not particularly fond of decorative picots, but if you like them, don't let my likes and dislikes stop you from using them. :) I think you've got a nice snowflake here - nice medallion, whatever it gets used as....and a little tweaking will make it into a fantastic snowflake.

Now all I see are crab legs, Steph ;-P I prefer clean lines as well, with minimal picots to stay true to the design. I started another last night where one of the tweaks is to eliminate 1 chain of the blue. Let's see ... Thanks you :-))
DeleteI like the blue one with the longer arms, but as you said, the spinning effect seems lost. I noticed that the center rings are already asymmetrical which should help with the look of spinning. Perhaps if you try decorative picots on the longer side of those rings, it would intensify the effect. I don't know, it's the only thought that occurred to me. Your design is very pretty already.

I haven’t analysed it, but I prefer the yellow one. For me, the arms on the blue one are too long to be attractive, and, as you say, you’ve lost the sense of movement.

DeleteI like the yellow one more, I agree with Stephanie to try to shorten chains but then probably you would need to add another sr. I also would try five arms.
ReplyDeleteI think my new version has largely solved the problem -- looks more like yellow one, but slightly longer arms, and the movement effect is back! Thanks, Nin....will certainly try a star version 💖

ReplyDeleteCarollyn, I'm good to go for at least 10-12 more flakes which are in various stages from previous years 😄 So not depressing, but naming all 25 will certainly be a challenge 😆 So, suggestions are welcome ...
DeleteI'm a bit confused regarding which way the twirling should actually go, towards the rings or towards the chains. Asymmetric split rings would definitely help with the effect either way.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest making more chains on the arms but connecting them between the split rings. That might not force the rings so much towards the chain joins and would make the legs slimmer too. But that is just my personal preference. Hmm, you could put the chains on the other side of the split rings?
Had another look and can see the twirling dilemma, Lavi 😄 Well, let's just say it's meant to spin one's head 😆😉
