let it go

… or not – that is the question!

I skipped this Sunday’s snowflake (we started with 28 weeks for 25 flakes, so …). For one I felt drained with all the pattern writing – some of the patterns are really tough to get through in as simple a format as possible.
For another, I was simply unhappy with all my attempts. To the extent that I kept picking up a different pattern to work up! Look for yourself …

I designed and tatted this in 2016 as a first round. I really like it and can’t seem to let go of it, but creating another round has me stumped.

Disregarding my past sketch (see the brown in lead pic?), I tatted this last week.

This yellow/green one is another attempt at an outer round. It ruffles when tatting but lays flat with blocking.
What is your verdict?

Then I tried to extend this small vintage snowflake. Those long chains are meant to be narrow. I like the shape they create individually & collectively, but clearly too large for this center. Having run out of thread, I’ve left it for now.

This is another flake that emerged from my mistake here. I made the left one in Dec 2018, but there is significant ruffling along the periphery, hence did not share. I’m giving it another go, using a larger center, but keeping the outer arms same. It should work, right?
It is worked in one pass, but during trials I like to work rounds separately so that one can snip off and discard parts instead of the entire tatting.

Along with your verdict, suggestions for names will be most appreciated :-)))

And before I sign off, here’s what Barbara Slodka shared with me. Dani Rotach’s Celtic Starfish from Finger Lakes 2015 Tatting Seminar.
From what I can see, it also uses the same numerical formula for the arms, though it is so much more ornamental and more advanced than my MatheMagical star! Isn’t it beautiful?!

  1. Does it need another round? I like the simplicity.

    1. I've been asking myself the same question, Jane, but need some peer critique to decide ๐Ÿ˜ Besides the designing obsession that ' surely I can?!' ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„
      Thanks ๐Ÿ’–๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ’—

  2. I really like your snowflakes!! :)
The ones in the first picture on the bottom are really great and I love the one on the left!!!
I really like your try on the vintage snowflake and agree that it doesn't work, but it's very pretty!!! ;)
And I love your large snowflake in the last picture!!! I would call it Icy Frills Snowflake. ;)
Designing is hard and pattern writing tiring, but you do amazing work and thank you for sharing so many beautiful designs!!! :)

    1. Sue, thank you so much for your feedback :-)))
And I Love the name you suggested - adopting it for sure !!!
It was kind of a non-focus, restless last week as regards tatting. But with Jane's comment last night, I'm back in action ;-D

  3. Ok... just because you asked... my favourite is the yellow-green, but I would shorten the green chains for a sort of layered effect, with the Jr and yellow picots emerging. You can add a third round, then. I would also try to tat tiny Jrings in red for the center, anyway the red is visible, another idea may be to finish the yellow with a little red ring layered in the centre. Well, sorry that makes it looking like a flower! Or use yellow as core thread.

    1. Nin, I would expect you to critique Even if I don't ask specifically! Who can I rely on if not friends ;-D
Believe it or not, I was going to use shorter green chains behind round 1, but got so fed up with the trials. With your blessing, I will try again :-)))
I've taken care of the center this morning with beads - it looks lovely ;-P

  4. Hey I would try (on the start of the yellow) to make a point much like you did with the red but make the point in between the beginning petals instead of on top of the petals like you did and also add more rounds. They look fun

    1. Carollyn, I'm trying to visualize it, and I agree the 2nd round can be offset. But I will still need to span across/over the 1st round petals? I like the idea, though, and will play with it - it can become a large flower :-)))

  5. The yellow/green one is my favorite! I have no suggestions for improvement. Sometimes a shot of steam is wonderful!

    1. This is what comes of a week of insipid, unfocused tatting week, Diane ;-P I just couldn't get myself to finish off (hide ends, etc.) nicely and block/steam before uploading !! :-(

  6. The first motif you tried to extend is pretty on its own as well, but I admit the red one complements the first round very well. It would look nice in two colours I think. Good luck with your attempts!
